Hundreds of old tyres are being transformed into colourful playground features after a Nottinghamshire garage chain launched a scheme to give them away for free to schools and nurseries.
Family-run Lindleys Autocentres, which operates 12 branches across Nottinghamshire, began offering unwanted tyres to local educational settings at the start of August, with deliveries made by its mobile fitting vans during their normal rounds.
The initiative has already proved a hit, with more than 50 schools, nurseries and playgroups either receiving tyres or getting in touch to request them.
Instead of ending up as waste, the tyres are being turned into everything from giant planters and obstacle courses to mud kitchens and outdoor play areas.
Among those to benefit is All Hallows Primary School in Gedling, where the tyres are set to be given a new lease of life in outdoor learning spaces.
With schools preparing to welcome pupils back for the new term, Lindleys says the response from staff has been overwhelming.
The deliveries are being made free of charge, with the company’s mobile fitting vans dropping off tyres while carrying out their usual work across the county.
The scheme also gives the unwanted tyres a more creative future, helping schools improve outdoor play areas without adding to already stretched budgets.
