Plans for new pedestrian and cycle bridge over River Trent pushed back to 2023

A planning application for a new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the River Trent near Colwick Country Park will not be submitted until next year.

The new pedestrian and cycle bridge will link Trent Basin in the city to West Bridgford in Rushcliffe when built.

It is being funded by the Government with a planned Spring 2023 opening date.

Keith Morgan, principal senior transport planner at Nottingham City Council, had initially said the plans would be submitted later in the year, however this will take place in 2023 now.

A Nottingham City Council spokesperson told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: “The council is pushing forward with plans to construct the new cycle and pedestrian bridge and over recent months has been working with landowners, the Environment Agency and a principal contractor to develop the scheme.

“A planning application is due to be submitted in the new year and we are working with the contractor to advance the design of the scheme and firm up the scheme cost.”

Once built it will become the first new crossing over the River Trent in Nottingham since Clifton Bridge eastbound opened in 1972, which was built years after its older western counterpart, completed in 1958.

Delegated decision documents from October reveal the local authority has now agreed to cover landowners’ reasonable professional costs associated with assembling the land required to deliver the pedestrian and cycle bridge across the River Trent.

The exact nature of these documents is restricted for public viewing, but the council says it is “pushing forward” with plans.

It comes as calls for a fourth road bridge continue to mount.
