Match Report: Coalville Town 2 Carlton Town 1

The Millers fell short against Coalville as they rued missed chances before their new signing Nialle Rodney pounced a mistake in the Carlton defence. Then Aaron Hooton did similar also, coming back to haunt his former club, as he came on in the first half due to injury. Although Daniel Gordon did pull one back for the visitors just before half time, although neither side were able to add to the score line second half.

Early on Carlton realised they would be in for a tough afternoon, when Alex Troke turned and shot, but it was straight at Jack Steggles. Then moments later Luke Smithson had a shot across goal, but it went wide of the far post.

Then the Millers grew into the game, Gordon delivered a corner that bounced around the goal, but all Romaine Graham could do, was back heel the ball wide of the target.

However, it was still the home side creating the most pressure, and came close when a miss kick was Steggles went straight to Nialle Rodney, but the strikers’ effort was saved and held by Steggles, making amends for his error.

Then chances came for the away side, as Tom McConway played a great through ball to Graham, who beat two Coalville players, but his shot trickled wide of the far post. Then great build up play by Gordon played in Josh Rae, but his shot was delfected off target.

The hosts were the side to break the deadlock, when another mix up at the back, let in Rodney who took the ball past Steggles and then when faced with the empty goal, smashed the ball into the back of it.

Then Hooton doubled the lead five minutes later as a low cross from the right hand side fizzed into the box, falling to the former Miller Hooton’s feet, who crashed the ball home from short distance.

However, Carlton did grab a goal back before the break, as Graham did well to keep the ball in on the by-line, before cutting the ball inside and playing it backwards to Gordon, who slammed the ball past Sean Bowles and into the net.

In the second half the game became a midfield battle, with very few clear chances, but the Millers thought they’d levelled when Rae provided a cross that was headed goal bound by Gordon, but the ball hit the post before flying into the arms of Bowles, who was rooted to the spot from the initial header.

Carlton now have to shake off this loss, collecting only positives from it, as they move on to two cup clashes in a row. Firstly at home to local rivals Basford United on Wednesday in the League Cup. Then travelling to the West Midlands Saturday, as they face Stourbridge in the FA Trophy, who they eventually lost to last season in the same competition after forcing a replay.

Tables have turned for Mapperley Park Badminton Club

Bouncebackability might not be a phase found in the English dictionary, but it was oh-so-true for Mapperley Park Badminton Club after a slow start to the season writes Andy Shaw.

After losing the first five matches of the season, the tables have turned dramatically, with the club winning four out the last five.

The one loss came for the 3rd Men’s at home to a well-supported Naseeb. Andy Tyas gave debuts to Dave Hall, who joined from Kimberley in the summer and Dan Wiltshire, also joining in the summer from Arboretum. A slow start gave the away side a 4-0 lead, but the reshaped side came back strong with Andy/Rob and Dave/Harry taking two rubbers each to narrowly miss out 5-4. An encouraging result, considering the 3rd team were pushed up a league by default.

After two tight losses to the University of Nottingham, the 3rd Ladies clawed one back by beating the students 5-4 in another close match. There was a debut for one of our juniors, Rhia Simmonds, under the new captaincy of Sarah Thomas. It was a great team effort, with two rubbers for the pair of Captain Sarah and former captain Maxine. The mother and daughter combination of Aylish and Karen took two rubbers, with Rhia and Kara taking a vital fifth.

The 2nd mixed got back on track with a 5-4 victory away at Forest, with Lisa Straw absent, Kath Sutton came in from the 3rd team to partner Matt Haigh. Captain Jodie and James Watkins took a maximum, leading the way for a good away victory.

The 1st Mixed and 1st Ladies faced local rivals Carlton BC, both within the space of a week. Both matches away from home, on a Friday night, it doesn’t always make for an easy ride. First up were the ladies. They raced into a 5-0 lead, with Nat and Jodie leading the way and silencing the home support. Despite the home side getting on the board late, the final score line was a very pleasing 7-2, getting the ladies off to a strong start in what will be a tough division 1 campaign.
Exactly a week later the 1st Mixed (with half the ladies that had won a week earlier) returned to the same venue. With Nat making a welcome return to partner Steve, Mapperley fielded their strongest side. A tight match was anticipated…. It didn’t’ turn out that way. A convincing 9-0 victory for Mapperley. Dominant from the start, and only dropping two games all evening. A sweet victory that eclipsed the memories of the 5-4 home defeat 2 years ago.

Back to the 1940s for guests at forthcoming charity event in Carlton

WARTIME songs, vintage clothing and some jitterbug swing will all be part of a 1940s knees-up being held in Carlton later this month.

The Richard Herrod Centre will play host to Another Night to Remember on November 20, which Gedling Borough Council has organised to raise money for the Royal British Legion and a local children’s charity.

Guests attending the event will be treated to a 1940s themed buffet of ration-style classics and are being invited to dress up in 40s style, with prizes on offer for the best dressed.

A live swing band music will be hoping to fill the dancefloor by playing a wide repertoire of 40s classics and giving people the chance to experience real wartime revelry.

The Mayor of Gedling will be at the event to help raise money for We R Here, a Gedling-based charity which supports children, young people and families who have experienced traumatic life events.

Mayor of Gedling, Councillor Meredith Lawrence said: “It’s so important that we support the Royal British Legion with this themed remembrance event, fitting in nicely with the poppy appeal, so sharing the proceeds between them and We R Here was a perfect idea. Everyone attending is in for another night to remember!”

Tickets for this event are only £12 but must be booked in advance. People can contact the Elections & Members’ Services Team at the Civic Centre on 0115 901 3673 or email civic@gedling.gov.uk to reserve tickets.

New voices wanted for community choir in Gedling

A group of singers in Gedling are on the search for new voices to join their community choir.

The Gedling Community Choir was established two months ago and meet each Monday at the Methodist Church.

The choir currently has over 15 members, but now organisers are on the hunt for more vocalists amongst the local community.

Choir founder Anna MacArthur is keen to get as many people in the local community involved as possible.

She said: “I really wanted to create a community-based choir that was open to everyone, simple to join and fun to take part in.

“There’s no audition, no sheet music to worry about and no difficult choral lines to take home and practice. We are made up of people of all ages, from all backgrounds, with varying amounts of musical experience who have one thing in common: we love to sing.”

The songs to sing are voted for by the choir themselves and hits by ABBA, One Direction, The Carpenters, The Beach Boys, Kate Perry and even One Direction have become firm favourites with members.

The choir meet on Monday nights at The Methodist Church on Gedling Road, between 6.30pm-7.30pm. Each session is £4 per person

November train update from Tony Cave

Tony Cave is Gedling Eye’s resident train expert and also has adopted our local stations in Carlton and Netherfield. Each month he provides an update on our local train services…

SATURDAY TIMETABLE CHANGES AT CARLTON

From December 2016 the Saturday timetable at Carlton will be improved to give the station an hourly service between Newark and Matlock like in the week. This does mean the station will lose the daytime direct trains to and from Lincoln. However there is a good chance that there will be a train mid-morning to Lincoln and 10.30am seems to be the favoured time by those who use the service. The other option is 9.30am so let East Midlands Trains know what time you prefer. It is alos hoped Carlton will have trains call on Saturday evenings.

EXTRA TRAIN AT CARLTON FROM DECEMBER 14

The 16.34 Lincoln to Leicester train will call additionally at Carlton from 17.23 on Mondays to Fridays, the same as it already does on a Saturday.

PASSENGER INCREASE AT CARLTON STATION

It is now six months since we gained the hourly weekday service at Carlton station and numbers using the trains has steadily increased. The 08.08am service to Matlock is a popular train and on Monday, October 12, a record 29 passengers joined at Carlton. The 08.24 on the old timetable only averaged around 10 joining each day. From what I hear, evening services are also well used, but daytime passengers to Newark and Lincoln don’t seem to have increased much.

NETHERFIELD STATION UPDATE

Did you know you could get to the station on Chaworth Road? Not many people do. They also don’t seem to know that in a morning you can get a train direct to Liverpool. There is currently a campaign at Radcliffe-on-Trent to have an improved service from that station, and this has inspired a person locally who works in Radcliffe to start a campaign for extra trains at Netherfield.

Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire County Councils are also keen to have more trains at both stations. I have spoken to many people who said they would use the service if it was provided. After all, four minutes between the two stations compares favourably with up to 90 minutes by bus via Nottingham. Even by car at peak times it can take a long time. I’ll let you know in this column when the campaign is up and running.

LINCOLN CHRISTMAS MARKETS

From December 3 to 6 extra trains will run direct from Carlton. Friday 4 at 09.58, 12.00 extended to Lincoln and 15.27pm. Extra return services leave Lincoln at 14.07 and 16.22. The usual service gives plenty of evening trains. On Saturday 5 there will be extra trains from Carlton to Lincoln at 09.14am, 11.14am, and 13.56pm. Extra returns ervices depart Lincoln at 14.56pm, 17.11pm and 19.00pm, which is the last train to Carlton. There will also be extra trains from Nottingham which will run to Lincoln non-stop and usually will run in front of the local train services.

CHRISTMAS and NEW YEAR TRAIN ARRANGEMENTS

Local services will wind down from around 19.00pm on Christmas Eve and there are no trains on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. Normal services resume on Sunday, December 27 with a weekly service from Monday, December 28 until Friday, Nauray 1 inclusive. Trains will run every hour on New Year’s Day when buses do not normally operate. Off Peak fares will be available all day long and also between Christmas and New Year companies have special offers, so it’s worth checking out their websites.

Arnold builders complete £7m revamp of historical Derbyshire mill

An Arnold building firm were today celebrating the completion of a £7m project to convert a derelict Derbyshire mill into luxury apartments.

DL Rhodes and Son were selected by Nottingham-based ALB Investments to transform Victoria Mill in Draycott into 73 luxury one and two-bedroomed apartments.

The work has now been completed ahead of schedule and all the flats have already been reserved for sale.

Managing director Nigel Rhodes said that the mill is one of Erewash’s most important and historic buildings with a history of being one of the most important lace factories in the world.

He said: “We are delighted with how successful the project has been. From day one we have tried to build a relationship with the local residents and we have always been welcomed with open arms.

“We truly believe that this regeneration will be fantastic for local residents, shops and business owners by bringing more footfall to the area. The project has had a positive response from the local community.”

The two firms held a launch event this morning to celebrate and invited over 80 property and construction professionals from across the region to join them.

ALB managing director Arran Bailey said: “The ‘Builders Breakfast’ seemed like a far more fitting opening party than a champagne and canapé filled evening, it meant we could thank everyone who assisted with the project personally and gave everyone a chance to have a look at the completed project.”
