New plant shop opens this weekend at Woodthorpe Park

0

A new plant shop at the nursery in Woodthorpe Park will open its doors to the public this Saturday and a range of special offers will be available over the opening weekend.

The nursery is the hub of the award-winning Nottingham in Bloom campaign, growing half a million plants each year for the city’s displays and playing a vital role in Nottingham’s entry into the East Midlands in Bloom competition.  It also grows plants for a number of neighbouring local authorities and others further afield.

Councillor Dave Trimble, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, said: “Over the past few years people have flocked to buy plants at the nursery’s occasional open days.  This small shop will cater for year-round demand and will support the work of the nursery.   Our team have a wealth of experience and are looking forward to sharing their skills and advice.”

Woodthorpe Park Plant Shop will open daily from 9am to 3pm. Plants on sale will include Poinsettia and Cyclamen grown at the nursery, along with a variety of other seasonal plants and shrubs.  Christmas trees, plants and gifts will also be on sale from November 28 until December 23. More information is available on www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/plantshop

There will be a day of Festive Family Fun on Saturday 12 December, from 9.30am to 3.30pm.  Attractions will include craft stalls, Santa and face painting.  Entry is free.

Arnold in seventh heaven after big win lifts them off bottom

Arnold Ladies moved off the foot of the table with an emphatic 7-1 victory against Grimsby Borough Ladies at Eagle Valley.

Hard work is something the management at Arnold have constantly told the players that will bring success. After weeks of hard work and gradual improvement it was pleasing to see it all come together today. Facing Grimsby Borough who narrowly came away with a 2-1 win earlier in the season, it was seen as a potenial 6-pointer today with both sides occupying the bottom two spots in the league.

Arnold were boosted by a full squad having battled valiantly the previous week with just 10 players, which clearly improved the atmosphere in the dressing room although it did give manager Andy Ingle a selection headache. Straight from kick off, Arnold were quick to harrass the visitors but saw less of the ball within the first 15 minutes. Once they settled down and got a hold on the game the chances started to develop. Molly Parker looked dangerous as ever when running at the defence but to no avail. It was the returning Elli Leathen, back after an knee injury, who calmly played the ball to the captain Jen Lorimer. she turned inside her marker before placing the ball with her weaker left foot into the bottom corner.

This allowed Arnold to increase their intensity and play with more freedom. Emily Nelis was causing problems with her pace on the left side, which opened up the space for Molly Parker to run through on goal before picking her spot and doubling the lead. Minutes later it was three as Jen Lorimer found space on the edge of the box before curling the ball into the top corner.

Grimsby still looked dangerous going forward and never gave up. Numerous corners caused the Arnold defence to have to be on their guard but they stood up to everything thrown at them. Things continued to get better and better as Molly Parker found her self on the bi-line before placing the perfect pass for Emily Nellis to tap in at the back post.

4-0 at half time could in reality have been doubled but having not been in this position for a long long time, it was important that heads were kept focussed as Grimsby are a team of grafters and an early goal back would have made it a nervous second half. Whilst the game plan was being well executed it was a fluke goal that brought the visitors back into the match, as a save by Emily Hallam cruelly rebounded off her before spinning backwards into the net before she could claw it out.

Character was now so importatnt as Grimsby grew in confidence, still hoping to get something out of the game. Having weathered the storm Arnold held firm and the defensive midfielders of Chloe Jordan and Ciara Button maintained the wall infront of the back four as well as driving the side forward. Molly Parker doubled her tally with another composed finish before Natasha Leach opened her Arnold account when she scored from just outside the 6 yard box to make it 6-1.

With two players now on for a hatrick, it was great to see the home team close out the game so professionally with the bonus of Molly beating the skip to the match ball, with a simple finish at the back post.

So 7-1 at full time is a convincing win but there is still alot of the season to play. The quality and belief is here and with consistancy, this season could really be starting now as long as the players contunine their hard work, but for tonight there are smiles all round and rightly so.

Team: E.Hallam, T.Potter, C.Davey, C.Potter, C.Norman, J.Lorimer (c), E.Leathen, C.Jordan, C.Button, E.Nelis, M.Parker

Subs: B.Polak, C.Stocks, K.Hart, N.Leach

The Arnold Town Ladies 2nd team had one of those days that football often provides. Having taken the lead in the Senior League Cup v Ilkeston, they managed to watch chance after chance either hit the post (five times), be saved or miss the target. Ilkeston offered little going forward but managed to sneak the ball in at the front post following a second half corner to equalise. They then managed to take the lead 5 minutes later with a well taken direct free kick. Arnold continued to press and were finally rewarded with a good team goal with under 15 minutes to go. With only one team in it now it was heart breaking for all involved when Ilkeston were awarded a penalty in which they duly converted. Final score 2-3 but with lots of positives to be taken into next week’s game against Mansfield Town.

The Under 16’s and 18’s were in action for the Notts FA Shield. The 16’s were on wrong end of a 9-0 defeat away at Bingham whilst Notts County beat the under 18’s by a 1 goal margin, winning 3-2 at Eagle Valley

0

Businesses in Gedling borough are being warned not to respond to a scam letter issued by a German-based business called UK Data Control, asking for details of missing VAT numbers.

The official-looking letter asks for confirmation of VAT numbers and other business details. However, the small print within the letter from the Hamburg-based business confirms that signing and returning the form also commits the signatory to agreeing to pay £790 annually for their details to be published on a website.

Nottinghamshire County Council Trading Standards are concerned businesses in the borough may consider the letter to be an official communications and sign and return the form leading to demands for payment.

A spokesman for trading standards said: “The letter says that the sender is looking to update VAT registration numbers.

“The first page of the letter gives the impression that this is a free service, but the small print states that by returning the attached the form you are signing up to a £790 p/a advertising contract on a “UK-Data Control portal.”

We have checked the UK-Data Control portal website and have noted that several Nottinghamshire businesses are already listed on it.

We would like to assure Nottinghamshire businesses that the sender is not associated with HMRC or the County Council, and that you have no obligation to provide any information to this company.

If you have received one of these letters and received an invoice please report the matter to Action Fraud at www.actionfraud.police.uk.  We also suggest you seek legal advice before making any payment.

Burglars target properties in Arnold and Carlton while owners are away on holiday

0

Nottinghamshire Police has issued a warning to people in the Arnold and Carlton area after burglars targeted properties in both towns while owners were away on holiday.

The break-ins have mainly occurred over the past fortnight and the Woodthorpe and Porchester areas have been particularly affected.

Nottinghamshire Police are currently investigating these offences and would like to hear from anyone with information about the burglaries.

Andrew Berryman, local neighbourhood police inspector for Gedling North and South, said: “Both the Arnold and Carlton areas have experienced a number of dwelling burglaries in the last fortnight and it has been apparent at a number of these attacked addresses that the occupants have been away on holiday.”

He also offered the following advice to those going away on holiday over the next few weeks.

“Please ensure that you protect your property when not at home and particularly when you are away for any length of time.

“Ask a relative or neighbour to visit your address and make it appear as if the address is being used, by drawing the curtains, and switching lights on and off. Ensure that you cancel milk and newspaper deliveries. Timer switches can be inexpensive, and can be used to make the address appear occupied.”

If you have any information as to who is responsible. Please contact Nottinghamshire Police via the non-emergency number 101. Alternatively, please contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

JAILED: Darrell Anton Edwards, 31, of Perry Barr, Birmingham
JAILED: Darrell Anton Edwards, 31, of Perry Barr, Birmingham

A man who was found with more than £8,000 worth of drugs has been jailed.

Darrell Anton Edwards, 31, of Perry Barr, Birmingham was sentenced to three years and 10 months for possession with intent to supply class A drugs.

Officers initially stopped Edwards in a car on 14 August in Queens Drive, Nottingham. Officers had to force their way into the car when they noticed Edwards throwing a white block out of the window. Edwards was then arrested at the scene.

Officers then carried out a search of the car and found over £3500 in cash.

Later that day, officers carried out a drugs warrant at an address in Balmoral Road, Colwick. A large number of items were recovered in the warrant, including over £1500 cash, three wraps of powder, and three knives with powder on the blade. A number of documents linked to Edwards were recovered from the scene.

The white block was tested and found to be cocaine. Drugs recovered from the Colwick address proved to be heroin and cocaine in separate wraps.

Edwards was subsequently charged with possession with intent to supply crack cocaine and heroin. He pleaded guilty to the offence at Nottingham Crown Court on 16 November 2015.

Temporary Detective Chief Inspector Karen Pearson said: “The work of the officers involved in this case has been fully rewarded with this result.

“I am very pleased to see Edwards receive a jail sentence and it will give him a long time to think about his decisions and actions.

“This result also shows how much we are working to get illegal drugs off our streets, and serves as a warning to other illegal drug users that we will eventually find you and bring you to justice.”

Rogue landlords rumbled by students over lack of safety standards at Mapperley Park property

0

Two rogue landlords have been fined over £30,000 after knowledgeable building surveyor students renting their property in Mapperley Park exposed their lack of safety standards to local authorities.

Mr Irfan Tariq and Mrs Sajadah Tariq, of Ringwood Crescent, Wollaton, were found guilty for multiple breaches of safety standards and lack of licensing at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on November 12.

Council authorities were alerted to the property after the group of students raised concerns with Nottingham Trent University’s Student Advice Centre and a Fire Officer. Safer Housing officers then decided to visit the former nursing home at Corporation Oaks in Mapperley Park.

When officers called round to the property, Mrs Tariq was present and stated there was no one living there, although there were belongings relating to tenants including mobile phones and laptops on charge.  Mrs Tariq stated these belongings had been left by former tenants and she was going to get rid of them.

When a warrant was granted and entry gained, the property was found to be occupied by seven international students on the upper floors and five building surveyor students on the ground floor.

There were many contraventions of The Housing Act 2004 and The Management of Houses in Multiple Occupation (England) Regulations 2006 which included items of disrepair and management issues such as a live electrical cable protruding out of a kitchen floor and a kitchen fire door removed.  Further breaches include an escape exit door screwed shut, dirty conditions in kitchens, no heating and the fire alarm system was not working.

The Tariqs were both found guilty in their absence. This was Mr Tariq’s second offence for similar Housing Act related offences.

In summing up, the District Judge commented that it was unfortunate for them that the Tariqs had taken on building surveyor students in their final year who had knowledge of building failures and rightly complained of the conditions they were living in.  This was in contrast to the vulnerable international students who were living in worse conditions on the upper floors.  He set the fees as a warning to those who wish to do the same.

Councillor Nicola Heaton, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at Nottingham City Council, said: “The Tariqs were operating a business, and making money from this.  If they had applied for a licence the authorities would have ensured the property was to the correct standard before the property was let out. Instead they chose not to, which left young students vulnerable and in a house that was unsafe and not fit for the private rental market.”
