Young Carlton Town starlet Jason Law has signed for League Two side Mansfield Town.

Law, who only recently made his full debut at Carlton Town at just 16 years old, has scored 4 goals in the 3 games he started.

The former Derby County and Burton Albion academy player put pen to paper for the Stags last Wednesday.

 

Carlton Town’s chairman Mick Garton said the move is a blow for the club who are struggling in the league this season.

He told Carton Town’s website: “We knew Jason would go higher and we were delighted to give him the opportunity to express himself, a chance he took with both hands.

“But the move away has come sooner than we expected and although we are delighted for Jason, it is obviously a blow in one sense given our league position”

“Because of Jason’s age and education status, we were not allowed to contract him so we will have to rely on the goodwill of Mansfield going forward if he makes progress with them which I believe he will”

“We received a lovely card off his family thanking us what we had done for their lad in giving him the opportunity and we have an excellent relationship with Mansfield Town which is obviously important and it was great to see Jason and his dad at our Christmas event when we had the chance to wish him all the best”

He added: “Jason is certainly the best young striker I have seen here, make no mistake about that.”

Recycle your Christmas tree at Calverton and raise money for British Legion

treerecycleGEGedling borough residents are being reminded they can recycle their real Christmas trees this year by taking them along to Nottingham County Council’s recycling centre at Calverton.

Trees taken to the recycling centre are shredded for composting or chipped for use in parks and gardens, rather than taken to landfill or left to rot at the bottom of the garden.

Recycling your tree this year not only benefits the environment, but also the British Legion, as a recycling firm has promised to make a donation to the charity based on recycling numbers.

For every 50 tonnes of Christmas trees sent for recycling throughout January, Veolia – who manage waste for the council – will donate £100 to The Royal British Legion. The Legion is this year’s chosen charity of County Council Chairman Coun Sybil Fielding for her year in office.

Ally McBeal star Vonda Shepard has announced she is to play Lowdham Village Hall next October as part of a new UK tour.

Vonda played a sell-out tour of the UK earlier in 2015 and says “I had so much fun performing for my fans in the UK, it was the highlight of my year and I can not wait to come back and see everyone again”.
Vonda first shot to fame through her long-running appearances, performances and musical accompaniment on the US smash hit TV show Ally McBeal. Borough’s heroes to be honoured at Pride of Gedling Awards 2016

PrideofgedlinglogoThe search has begun to find this year’s biggest community heroes across Gedling borough.

Gedling Borough Council has teamed up with the Nottingham Post to launch the Pride of Gedling Awards 2016 with the aim of recognising the outstanding work of local people who make a positive contribution to our communities.

Members of the public have until January 6 to nominate someone they think goes above and beyond in one a number of categories.

There are six categories to nominate for:

Good neighbour award – This award recognises inspirational individuals who have gone that extra mile to make everyday life better for others in their community.

Community Servant award – Someone who works serving the public in their day job and has gone above and beyond the role to help others, assist their community or improve their environment.

Young person award – This award celebrates young people, under the age of 21, who make an outstanding contribution to their communities.

Volunteer award – Someone who volunteers with a group or organisation and, through their commitment to others, make a big contribution to the community.

Outstanding community project – This award is open to any project which helps our local communities and improves the lives of those who live in them. Whether it be a playgroup or nursing home, a charity or Scout troop this category honours the work of the vital groups in the community.

Business in the community award – Gedling has many businesses serving our community. This award recognises those which play a role in supporting their community and in their approach to the environment, the marketplace, the community or their workforce.

Heavy loss dampens Christmas spirit at Mapperly Park

As Christmas approaches, daily life starts to wind down. This isn’t the case for the badminton players of Mapperley Park. A busy pre-Xmas schedule to round off the 1st half of the 2015/2016 season (with the Xmas party somewhere in the middle).

After a narrow defeat in their opening fixture, the 1st men’s team travelled to Rolls Royce Derby (a familiar theme this season) to face last season’s Premier division winners. Steve Smith was unavailable and replaced by Paul Holmes. It was a tough night, the team not really doing themselves justice, winning only two games in a 9-0 loss.

The 2nd men’s played their first match of the season against Rolls Royce, away in Derby. With a new captain and a new look team, they were looking for a strong start in their quest to get back to division 1. Solid performances by the two youngsters, Harry and Adam anchored a hard fought 5-4 win. After a battling performance in their opening fixture, the 3rd men’s faced two strong sides in Rolls Royce and Chilwell. Losses of 8-1 and 9-0 were hard on the team, considering the players that were missing.

The 4th Mixed lost a tough one 8-1 to Chilwell, but then bounced back to beat Boots 6-3, Andy Waplington and Kara Gokova taking a maximum. The 3rd mixed haven’t really got going yet, after their opening fixture was postponed they have suffered back to back defeats against a strong Chilwell side (8-1) and Bingham (6-3) despite Lisa Crouch and Con Truong taking two. The 5th Mixed opened their season away at Beeston Valley, with a completely new look team. An impressive 9-0 win giving real hope they can at last get out the division.
After losing the opening match of the season, 2nd mixed have been flying. Two 8-1 victories against Boots and the University, giving them a fighting chance of promotion to division 1, going into their last match vs East Leake in January. The 1st Mixed recorded two convincing wins in the space of a week. A 6-3 win at home to Bingham followed by an 8-1 win away at Byron. This maintains their division 1 status, but with three matches left could they make a push for promotion to the Premier division?

The 1st ladies suffered a tough 5-4 loss away at Forest, but bounced back well to beat Bingham 5-4 at home. A good team effort. Nat Wright and Jodie Smee taking two, with Jackie Thompson and Lisa Straw also taking two. This victory secures the 1st ladies team in division 1. The 3rd ladies team split their November results; a 9-0 win away at Trent University was followed by a 7-2 loss to St Giles. Despite this loss, they will still be in with a chance of promotion come the season finale.

WI pack bags in supermarket to raise cash for Joshua Dale Skate Park Fund

Volunteer bag packers from Netherfield & District WI will again be in Morrisons today (23) in a bid to raise more cash for the Joshua Dale Skate Park Fund.

The volunteers had previously spent the day in the supermarket a fortnight ago to raise over £320 for a local cat charity.

The group have now turned their attention to boosting funds for the Joshua Dale Skate Park Fund.

The group president Sharon Ellis has already raised over £1200 for the charity after hosting a quiz night.

A new social club opened its doors in Netherfield last week after work on their new building was finally completed.

The Crossing Social Club, on Victoria Road, now houses members of the London Midland Railway Club after they opted to sell their previous home next to Victoria Retail Park to developers.

The club are now looking to start recruiting new members from the local area in February next year.

A spokesperson for the club said: “It’s a simple process to join. You attend for a few weeks before putting an application to the committee.”

Police on hunt for suspicious female in Woodthorpe area

policestockPolice are warning residents in Woodthorpe to be wary of a suspicious female who has attempted to gain access to properties in the area over the past few days.

Nottinghamshire Police are now trying to trace the woman, who is described as being in her 20s, with shoulder length brown hair, following a number of reports from concerned residents in the Arnold area.

In the latest incident the woman approached the occupant of a local house and stated that she had just left her handbag, containing her house keys, on a bus and requested whether she could use the Yellow Pages to find the number of a locksmith in order to get access to her address. She had stated to the occupant that she had spoken to locksmiths and they required payment up front.

On this occasion, the occupant became suspicious and started questioning the female, who left the area.

“Similar incidents have been reported in the area on previous dates,” said local neighbourhood inspector Andrew Berryman.

“If you have been approached by this female, Nottinghamshire Police are keen to hear from you. We are keen to identify and trace the female.”

Inspector Berryman also reminded residents to be wary of unexpected callers to the home.

He said: “Please do not let unknown visitors into your address and ensure that you keep your doors locked, even when at home. If you are unsure about a caller, please ensure that you validate their identity prior to letting them inside your address.

“Genuine visitors will not mind you checking their identity. If they are from a company, call the company to check that they acting on their behalf. If in doubt, call Nottinghamshire Police.”

A new health and fitness centre opening up in Netherfield is holding an open evening to give people in the area the chance to look around the new venue and also learn more about classes on offer.

The Netherfield Wellness Centre, which is based on Victoria Road, is holding the open evening on January 4, from 7pm.

The centre, which opens in the new year, will offer members free weekly fitness classes, nutritional advice, skincare and nutritional shake parties and full body analysis.

The centre’s first fitness competition will also begin on Tuesday, January 5. The Netherfield Body Challenge lasts for eight weeks and a cash prize is up for grabs to the winner.

With Christmas around the corner, the last game of 2015 saw Arnold Town Ladies play an away game against Rise Park in the familiar surroundings of Eagle Valley. Having lost the reverse fixture on the opening day of the season, it was important to show how far this team really had come as only three players were new to the starting line up on that day.

With the usual Arnold wind blowing a gale, Arnold Town had it in their favour in the first half. Crunching challenges were allowed to go by the referee as neither side held back in the first 30 minutes. Rise Park edged the corner count but neither side really created a clear cut chance. Emily Nelis, Molly Parker and Chloe Jordan had the best opportunities for Arnold but lost out to a heavy touch or an unlucky bounce. It took sheer persistence to create the break through as Molly Parker chased a lost cause into the Rise half which saw the defender panic and clear for a corner. From the set piece, Claire Potter connected well running across the front post to put the visitors into the lead at the break.

With the wind now against them, the light fading and a tropical storm brewing, Arnold knew that they only had to keep a clean sheet in order to collect the 3 points. The second half certainly was a much more backs-to-the-wall performance but boy, did they stand up to everything that was thrown at them. Considering the age difference in the two teams Arnold players didn’t give an inch and played with a maturity rarely seen over the last few years. The defence welcomed back Chay Davey to steady the ship, and Charley Norman passed a late fitness test to play the whole 90 minutes at left back. Claire Potter won every header and tackle and in my opinion, the best right back in the league in Tina Potter prevented Rise Park getting any chances at goal other than long range shots which were comfortably saved by the reliable Emily Hallam.

The midfield will have come away with bumps and bruises but that was due to them putting their bodies on the line for the team. Captain Jenny Lorimer was asked to play a more defensive role even though her show boating the week before would have got fans paying to watch, and she demonstrated the attitude that is moving through the whole club at the moment, as she held the team together as a real leader does. Chloe Stocks moved from the back four into a more defensive midfield role and showed the class that makes every Arnold manager want her in their side, and Elli Leathen proved that she has the mental strength to go along side her obvious talent.

With the daylight almost non-existent Rise were unable to break the side down and Arnold went into the Christmas break with another win, and hopefully a message to all the other teams in the East Midland Premier League, that this club is no longer an easy team to play against.

Arnold Town Under 11’s used a free weekend to have their first ever 9-a-side match in a friendly against Mansfield Town. It was the first time they experienced the offside rule as well as a much bigger pitch. Both teams were a credit to their respectable clubs as they played not only good football but in a fantastic spirit. Arnold finished the game 4-3 winners which they can be extremely proud.
