Christmas toy appeal launched by Carlton firm

0

People are being urged to donate to a Christmas toy appeal with the aim of cheering up children admitted to hospital over the festive period.

Carlton man Mark Dawson is planning to hand out the donated toys during a Christmas party he is organising at the Queen’s Medical Centre on December 20.

Mark, who runs local bouncy castle hire company Mad Inflatables, said he was inspired into action after attending a recent charity event.

He said: “Because we run a bouncy castle company, we often get asked to help out a lot with fundraising.  We recently helped a charity called Little Princesses’ Trust and it broke our heart to see all the kids suffering.

“This really inspired us to do something at Christmas for the kids who are in hospital at a time of year that really should be magical.

New minimum bedroom size could be introduced to crackdown on rogue landlords in Gedling borough

0

A new minimum bedroom size could soon be introduced to prevent rogue landlords cramming tenants into overcrowded homes in Gedling borough.

The proposals, which were announced announced today, could see a mandatory room size of 6.52 sq metres being introduced to stop the exploitation of tenants.

The measures, if approved, would help councils clamp down on rogue landlords who attempt to maximise profits by dividing former family homes into bedsits.

The minimum size would be enforced in shared houses which are classed as homes in multiple occupation (HMO) and would apply to each individual or couple living within the property.

Other proposals announced in the consultation paper include: extending mandatory licensing rules for HMOs to flats above shops and other business premises; requiring landlords to provide decent storage and disposal of rubbish; and tightening up the “fit and proper person” test for landlords.

Gritting teams gear up for winter in Gedling borough

0

New four-wheel drive vehicles have been added to Nottingham County Council’s gritting fleet to help tackle hilly terrain in Gedling borough this winter.

The new vehicles are just part of preparation plans to ensure that the borough and the county can tackle whatever winter is prepared to throw at them this year.

Nottinghamshire County Council’s four salt barns are already full to the brim, giving it 12,000 tonnes more salt stockpiled than official government recommendations, putting Nottinghamshire in a strong position for dealing with the worst winter conditions.

Overall, the council has the capacity to store around 20,000 tonnes of salt – some 18,000 tonnes of under cover.

Checking and refilling of the 1,300 roadside grit bins has already begun and deliveries of salt to parish councils is planned for November.

There are 31 gritting lorries in the fleet, two gritting tractor units and two towable gritting units which can be used in severe weather – tracked by GPS technology.

The county council’s Gritter Twitter social media feed will once again be used to promote the daily gritting decision to all interested stakeholders.

Vonda Shepard at Lowdham Village Hall – Review

By Mark Salter

‘People can’t understand how we get this calibre of artist in Lowdham,’ announced promoter Mike Hoare when introducing Vonda Shepard, ‘but give a big hand because she is here.’

A throng of dedicated fans had joined the Warthog faithful to pack the Village Hall with many patiently queuing at the end for a chat with the star and a signature on album or piece of memorabilia.

A short but quaint set by singer-songwriter Michael Keithson preceded Shepard’s performance and beautifully set up the main event. Keithson shared a handful of songs on themes such as the city of Tokyo, handling mental health issues, and pieces of advice for his young daughter.

Shepard (singer, keyboardist, songwriter, and sometime actress) sang backing vocals for superstar, country- rocker, Jackson Browne, before rising to fame as resident musician in the Ally McBeal programme in the mid 1990s. With LP, Rookie, recently released, Shepard ran through new material as well as tracks spanning her entire career. Long standing backing musicians James Ralston (guitar) and Jim Hanson (bass) both exuded class, having respectively played with Tina Turner and Bruce Springsteen. The combo easily segued between country, soul, rock, gospel, jazz, and even Jo Stafford’s 1940s standard, You Belong To Me. As well as instrumentation, Ralston and Hanson contributing backing vocals..

Whether it was her own numbers like Baby Don’t You Break My Heart Slow, Serious Richard, and, Maryland, or covers, Walk Away Renee (The Four Tops), and Respect Yourself (The Staples Singers), the audience took every opportunity to sing and clap along. Gospel, Sweet Inspiration had Shepard at her most powerful and soulful before Searching My Soul brought the show to a close.

The rapturous audience demanded more and, after the briefest of interludes, Shepard returned. The encore was a mini-covers show of its own. The Exciter’s, Tell Him brought folks to their feet where they stayed for Proud Mary. Although originally a Credence Clearwater Revival track, Proud Mary was a regular feature in Tina Turner concerts and so gave Ralston a chance to take centre stage with a rousing guitar solo. I’m Hooked On A Feeling, and, I Only Want To Be With You completed a high octane conclusion to a stunning evening.

MATCH REPORT: Linby CWFC: 1 – 3 Matlock Town Reserves

Linby suffered a rare home defeat, their second only this season. But, in truth , they have played far worse and won games, writes Adrian Ward.

The lead up to the game was a harsh one for Manager Lewis Saxby, with FIVE defenders out injured, and influential skipper Aidy Harris ,also injured, he was forced to give a debut to 16 year old Centre Back Steve Johnson-Fikula. But in many ways , that , in itself shows how much strength in depth , Saxby has now built into the Club.

On Saturday they came up against a very youthful looking Matlock reserve team, who were very good on the counter, and possibly the best Goalkeeping performance by a visiting keeper for many years .

Matlock started the game well, and on 5 minutes,  Linby had to be thankful to 17 year old Full Back Ed Heginbotham , who headed the ball off the line.                                                                                      12mins, and Town led, a cross from the right and the impressive Tom Savage headed the ball into Josh Downies bottom corner , giving the Linby keeper no chance. 0-1.

20mins , as Linby began to get into the game, Tremere Lindos turns and his shot looked destined for the top corner, but the first of many, fantastic saves by young keeper Jordan Pierrepont , kept Town in  front.

On 38mins, Linby were level, Lewis Weaver pounced onto a loose throw in, sped to the byeline and crossed for Jamie Tryner , to drill an excellent finish into the bottom corner for his first Linby goal,1-1 41mins, good work from Glenn Tolley set up Weaver for a shot which looked to blocked by an hand, but despite Linby’s appeals, no penalty was given.

The second half became the “Pierrepont Show” as Town’s keeper made at least five outstanding saves to deny Linby.

On 52mins, Tolleys through ball sent the speedy Weaver in on goal , but Pierrepont saved the one on one brilliantly.                                                                                                                                                    On 54mins, Tryner put Weaver in again , and again the keeper made a great save , Matt Murphy looked certain to score from the re bound , but Pierrepont was up,  and saved brilliantly from point blank range.

On 70mins, Pierrepont produced a wonder “double” save to deny , firstly Steff Cobb , and then Weaver , again, incredible stuff .

Town then delivered the “coup de gra” a classic counter attack, saw Downie pull off a great save to deny Savage , but the ball fell kindly to Lee Jordan to sweep home, 1-2.

Linby strained for a second equaliser  and Weaver was again denied by another good save from Pierrepont .

You then knew it wasn’t going to be Linby’s day, as Jordan O’Callaghans shot was deflected onto the post .

Town twisted the knife into the Linby wounds with another goal on the counter , a superb finish from Savage , left Downie with no chance . 1-3.

On reflection , Linby have played a lot worse and won games, and Saxby may have a better week, this week , with the possibility of a few influential players returning from injury .

Line up: Josh Downie, Ed Heginbotham, Steve Johnson-Fikula, Will Spray, Steff Cobb, Glenn Tolley, Jordan O’Callaghan, Jamie Tryner, Tremere Lindo, Matt Murphy, Lewis Weaver

SUBS: Ellis Williamson (for Murphy 69m), Kye Pilmore(for Tryner 69m), Nick Davies (for Lindo 80m)

LINBY M.O.M:    JAMIE TRYNER

MATCH REPORT: Carlton Town 0- 2 Kidsgrove Athletic

Kidsgrove sealed three points in a game they always looked like winning writes Joshua Hodgeson.
For thirty minutes they looked the better side but a strong showing from Carlton’s midfield broke up any chances that were thrown their way.
In the 33rd minute Kidsgrove opened the scoring after a dubious decision that Lee Pickerill was onside. The linesman was unable to keep up with play and fans of both sides agreed that Harry Clayton’s goal should have seen the whistle well before the ball found the net.
The second half saw The Millers find more of a flow to their play with Romaine Graham and Lawrence Gorman substituted on, both of whom were part of the side that beat Chasetown just 7 days earliar. That momentum was soon taken away as a counter saw Ben Mills weave through the Carlton centre backs and calmly slotted in the back of the net to double their advantage.
Shortly after the same man had a goal dissallowed for a foul on Jack Steggles much to the suprise of all watching. The latter stages of the game became dull with both sides lacking any desire to add to the scoreline. A good win for Kidsgrove whose position in the table is very deceptive.
