41 homes to be built on site of former Blue Note pub in Carlton

0

Architects have drawn up plans to build homes on the site of a dilapidated pub in Carlton.

41 homes are set to be built on the site of the former Blue Note pub on Cavendish Road in Carlton.

Work has now begun and is expected to be completed by next Autumn.

The site will be made up of new family homes and flats and funding for the scheme has been provided by the Gedling Borough Council and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

The homes are being built by local construction firm Robert Woodhead Ltd’s specialist housing arm, Woodhead Living.

Some of the homes will be sold as part of a shared ownership scheme, with others being let and managed by Nottingham Community Housing Association (NCHA).

Allan Fisher, director of development at NCHA said: “Our ongoing partnership with Gedling Borough Council has lead to the transformation of three formerly derelict sites in the local area. This site is our biggest project yet and marks the start of an exciting new partnership with the Woodhead Group.

Free fishing for kids in Gedling borough following shake-up of rod licences

0

Kids in Gedling borough will be able to fish for free as part of a major shake-up of rod licences announced today by the Environment Agency.

Changes include a free rod licence for junior anglers which is hoped to encourage more young people to give fishing a go and secure the future of the sport.

Other moves include a rolling rod licence that lasts for 365 days from the day you buy it – rather than only running up until the end of March regardless of when it was bought.

The third change is one which carp and specimen anglers have long campaigned for: the use of 3 rods having just 1 licence, rather than needing 2.

There are also some small increases to standard charges – for example, a coarse fishing licence has been raised from £27 to £30. This is the first time the cost of a rod licence has increased since 2010 and all additional income generated will all go back into improving fisheries and services for anglers.

Mellish RFC weekly round-up

Here’s our weekly round-up from the Mellish RFC teams by Matt Bright

Mellish Ladies 32 v 5 Scunthorpe Ladies

Mellish Ladies welcomed Scunthorpe Ladies after an improved display away at Derby Vipers last week.

Mellish opened the scoring early on with a smart set of hands getting the ball wide to Ebony Hancock o dot down in the corner for a 5-0 lead. Soon after Mellish Ladies dominant pack gave a good platform for number 8 Sarah Driver to pick from a base of a scrum and run from just inside the Scunthorpe half to increase the lead to 10-0. Following a back and forth 10 minutes played mostly in the centre of the field Hannah Carrington put a smart kick through for Hannah Wilson to kick on and score to give Mellish a 15-0 lead. Further stoppages and some ill discipline by Mellish gave Scunthorpe Ladies some field position and after knocking on the door for a while they got over the try line to claim 5 points just before half time giving a 15-5 scoreline at the interval.

The message was simple at half time, to keep the pressure on and being direct. Mellish were soon on the scoreboard again as Ebony Hancock collected her 2nd try of the day, 20-5. Scunthorpe came back strong after this and spent a good period of time camped in the Mellish 22, but he ladies weathered the storm with only a yellow card for Sarah Driver and a Scunthorpe player for a bit of handbags.

With the sides at 14 players each Mellish moved down field and maximized an overlap with smart hands for Vahi Clerc to cross to give Mellish a 25-5 lead. The day was rounded off by another long range effort from Hanna Wilson fielding the ball just inside the Mellish half and breaking a couple of tackles to cross under the posts and add he conversion to her 2nd try of the day with the final play of the game giving Mellish a 32-5 victory.

Hundreds of ex-miners from Gedling Colliery to attend commemorative event on Monday

0

Hundreds of ex-coal miners are being invited to a former pit site 25 years after it closed its gates for the last time.

Over 200 ex-miners are expected to attend an afternoon of events planned to mark the anniversary of the last shift completed at Gedling Colliery.

The gathering will begin at the former Gedling Miners Welfare Club, now called Mapperley Plains Social Club, next Monday (7) at 13.30pm.

The ex-miners will then be taken to the former pit site, now home to Gedling Country Park followed by a visit to the Gedling Memorial Lamp where a ceremony will take place to remember those who died at the colliery.

A beacon will be lit at the park to mark the special event and the day will finish with a special presentation at the welfare club.

The event is being organised by Gedling Borough Council, the Gedling Miners Welfare Trust and the Friends of Gedling Country Park

As a colliery it was a cornerstone of the area until it closed in 1991 and stood derelict for over 20 years before Gedling Borough Council invested £1.6 million to turn it into a country park.

The last shift was recorded on Monday, November 7, 1991 – 25 years to the day that the commemorative event will take place.

New campaign urges businesses in Gedling borough to prepare for new £1 coin

0

A new campaign has been launched to help retailers and major businesses in Gedling borough prepare for the launch of the historic new £1 coin early next year.

The government and Royal Mint want to help all businesses in the area affected as the 30-year-old pound coin is brought out of circulation and replaced with a new 12-sided version.

The new pound coin will be the most secure of its kind in the world, to combat counterfeiters who have around 45 million counterfeit £1 coins currently in circulation.

New security features include a hologram-like image that changes from a ‘£’ symbol to the number ‘1’ when the coin is seen from different angles. It also has micro-lettering and milled edges.

Arnold pub relaunched following £180k makeover

0

The Mayor of Gedling pulled the first pint of a new beer brewed especially to mark the completion of an Arnold pub’s £180k makeover.

The Mayor of Gedling Borough, Councillor Sandra Barnes, pulled the first pint of Keys Ale – which has brewed by the revived and historic Nottingham Brewery to celebrate the reopening of the Cross Keys on Front Street.

The renovation work has taken two weeks and also created three new jobs at the much-loved Stonegate Pub Company-owned site.

The Front Street venue received a complete makeover with new fixtures and fittings introduced, along with the introduction of new furniture and the installation of a new sports area.

The pub has also purchased two new darts boards for the two teams at the pub – which is a firm favourite for sports fans in the area. This is thanks to the complete sports coverage at the Cross Keys thanks to its five HD screens, which show Sky Sports, BT Sport and At The Races.

General manager, Mandy Morley, said: “The Cross Keys is a community pub and the locals are really looking forward to the changes we are going to make to it. It has always been a sports pub and this will continue – but we are really upping the drinks and food offer too. There will be strong focus on craft and cask ale and we will have a full programme of events throughout the week to keep people entertained.”

The Cross Keys will offer three real ales at all time, plus will have three guest ales on weekly in addition to a hand-pulled craft cider.

It will kick off each week with sports coverage on a Monday; Tuesdays will be the day the darts teams play. On Thursdays the Cross Keys will be running poker nights; Friday is Best of British and on a Saturday the pub will have live DJ from 9pm.

On a Sunday the Cross Keys is launching a new interactive TV quiz – which gives each team a handset for timed answering.

Mandy, who has been a pub manager for 10 years and has been brought to the Cross Keys specifically to oversee the refurbishment and beyond, added: “The interactive quiz will be a great addition to the pub and there has been a lot of interest in it. The locals can’t wait to try it out.”

The Cross Keys will also be offering a complete range of hearty and good value meals like a burger and a drink for £6.49 or an all-day breakfast for £4.99.

Calverton teenager handed top gong at youth recognition awards ceremony

0

A teenager from Calverton has stopped the top gong at a Nottinghamshire youth award ceremony held last night.

Cameron-Lei Ford was amongst seven other teenagers from across the area who were picked up their 4Uth Awards during a ceremony held at Nottinghamshire County Hall in West Bridgford last night.

As well as securing the award for the Gedling area, Cameron was also named overall winner.

He said: “I am over the moon to have won and I will act upon it and take it forward. I would like to try to take on more of my friends and try to expand the enterprise.”

More than 65,000 people have engaged through social media channels including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram as part of this year’s annual youth awards using the hashtag: #4Uth, with more than 80 young people nominated for outstanding achievements.

Nottinghamshire County Council Leader Councillor Alan Rhodes said: “Many congratulations to all of our district award winners in this year’s 4Uth awards. This event was a great opportunity to highlight and celebrate their outstanding achievements.

“Cameron’s was a very impressive application. He is a very motivated young man showing tenacity and a determination to turn his life around and he has had some extremely difficult issues in his life.

“He has taken time to volunteer in his community, has taken time to develop his entrepreneurial skills and he has now become a very well respected young man in the Calverton community.

“Cameron has been an excellent role model for other young people – his social enterprise skills have come to the fore, he has been involved in gardening projects for other people, he has involved other young people in his community and encouraged them to do their bit to make life better for others in the Calverton community.”

He was nominated for the award by youth worker Mohammed Yaseen who is based at Calverton Young People’s Centre which Cameron attends.

Mr Yaseen revealed he nominated Cameron for overcoming a number of personal problems before going on to successfully help other young people in his local community by setting up a successful social enterprise.

He said: “For many years Cameron had experienced bullying because of being overweight. He struggled with poor self-image and his academic performance deteriorated and he was seen by youth workers to be behaving in an anti-social way more and more.

“With support from youth workers, Cameron became involved in community clean-ups. He started with his own street and then parts of his wider neighbourhood.

“He has since volunteered to tidy up local elderly people’s gardens and, inspired by his uncle, he has established a social enterprise to help young people earn money at weekends and holiday periods. “The aims of his social enterprise include tackling social problems caused by youth unemployment and anti-social behaviour, improving community spirit and pride in public spaces, and improving young people’s life chances and the environment.”

Councillor Rhodes and Councillor Liz Plant, Committee Vice-Chairman for Children and Young People’s Services, helped to judge the overall awards.

Councillor Liz Plant said: “The awards night is always a very special occasion and we were delighted that so many people were able to have their accomplishments recognised though these awards. We had a fantastic reaction to our initial call for nominations once again this year and thank everyone for taking their time to get involved and promote just some of the fantastic things that young people across Nottinghamshire achieve every day.”

The annual 4Uth awards recognise the outstanding achievements of young people across the county for a variety of different areas such as outstanding achievement, caring for others, vital contribution within a local community and overcoming adversity.
