MATCH REPORT: Radford 1 – 4 Gedling Miners Welfare

Radford ……………. 1 (Smith 13′)
Gedling MW ……… 4 (Hogg 21′, 81′, Thornton 40′, Newton 84′)
(HT 1-2)

Gedling Miners Welfare made it three wins on the spin as they came from behind to beat Radford at the CDW Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The visitors started well at a notoriously difficult venue and Courtney Hastings’ stinging strike was an early warning sign to the hosts after he did well to shrug off Wes Spencer after only 6 minutes.

Enjoying a decent spell in boggy conditions, Welfare grew on their promising start and looked the more settled, whilst Radford sought the more direct approach from wingers Ravarne Jackson and Conor Moore; instrumental in the game’s opening goal.

In their first venture forward, Moore’s delightfully chipped pass from the left found leading talisman Ryan Smith who, after breaking the offside trap, chested well and powered the ball under Keaton Sharpe to give his side a thirteenth minute lead.

Undeterred by the early set back, Miners continued to look the more promising on the ball and only 8 minutes after going behind deservedly drew level.

Some patient build-up down the left saw Aaron Large, Josh Thornton and Curtis Millward all combine to tee up Felix Hogg who arrowed a fine strike into the top corner out of reach of the despairing Warren Squires in the home goal.

Always a fixture that draws a bumper crowd at Selhurst Street, the game offered ample opportunities in poor conditions – the lion’s share of which fell to the visitors.

Firstly, however, Moore’s cross-cum-shot from all of 40 yards gave Sharpe something to think about in the swirling wind but the young stalwart did well to cautiously tip over just before the half hour.

At the other end, Thornton’s free kick was only half cleared to Charlie Roberts who did well to divert a low strike towards goal, but former-Miners defender Simon Hore did well to block before Kieran Harrison flicked Ross McCaughey’s corner agonisingly wide from the resultant set-piece.

The half ended with Welfare well on top as they recovered superbly from Smith’s early strike and 5 minutes before the interval they found themselves ahead.

Roberts’ deep delivery from the right was perfect and Large’s knock down, out-jumping Radford favourite Matt Hopewell, was perfect for an unmarked Thornton to poke home from four yards out and give Welfare the lead as the defensive inquest began.

Things may have even bettered for the travellers a minute before half-time when Hopewell’s tackle on Hastings, wonderfully timed, was surprisingly deemed unlawful by referee William Perry who awarded a spot-kick.

Justice was served, however, as Squires did wonderfully to beat away Hastings’ strike from twelve yards as the home protests continued well into the break.

Welfare resumed their exploits in the second half and looked to add a third, all but sealing a game where a typically dangerous Radford were limited to half chances under the firm defensive grip of the excellent Roberts, Harrison, Dean Gent and Luke Smith.

It took an hour for their best chance to arrive when Smith eventually found himself in between Harrison and Gent but the usually composed striker could only drag his rushed effort wide of Sharpe’s post.

5 minutes later and Roberts nearly put Welfare out of sight with a spectacular looping volley from an angle when he found himself on the end of Courtney Bartley’s headed clearance, but a scrambling Squires was equal to the effort.

The pressure mounted and Radford may have been lucky to end the game with all eleven on the field when Moore went unpunished following a trailing elbow on Hastings having already been cautioned earlier in the game.

15 minutes from time, Harrison looked certain to get on the score sheet when his free-kick curled towards the top corner, but Squires did magnificently to claw away for a corner and keep the Pheasants in with a shout.

It wasn’t to be, however, and Gedling only built on their fine performance as they eventually ensured all three points headed back to Plains Road with a quickfire double late on.

Calmness personified, Harrison’s exquisite control and pass into the path of Hastings’ saw the striker break the offside trap and set up Hogg who, after dancing around the challenge of Spencer, slotted underneath Squires for his second of the afternoon.

Matt Newton then got in the act after Thornton’s wicked shot was spilled into his path by Squires and the substitute reacted quickest to fire powerfully past the ‘keeper for his first goal in the yellow and blue.

An workmanlike performance from Gedling as they overcome tricky opposition and move into second in the league. They hope the impressive form through a tough winter period continues next Saturday (30 November) when they make the trip to Eastwood Community, kick off 15:00.

Gedling’s Conservative Tom Randall writes to Labour’s Vernon Coaker asking him where he stands on Brexit

The Conservative candidate for Gedling, Tom Randall, has written to his Labour opponent Vernon Coaker asking him to confirm where he stands on Brexit after Jeremy Corbyn said he would ‘remain neutral’ in a second EU referendum.

In the letter, Mr Randall writes: “Without a plan to get Brexit done it is impossible to have credibility on anything else. That’s why I’ve confirmed that, if I’m elected, I will back the great new deal that Boris Johnson has already agreed with the EU.

“Britain will be out of the EU by the end of January, giving families and businesses the certainty they need to plan for the future.

He added:“Your position as Jeremy Corbyn’s candidate for Gedling appears unclear and needs urgent clarification to help local people make their choice in this election.

The move comes as senior Conservatives called Mr Corbyn “Prime Ditherer” at a poster launch in Westminster following the Labour leader’s decision not to take sides in the proposed public vote on a new Brexit deal which his party intends to negotiate with Brussels.

In the letter, Mr Randall asked Mr Coaker to clarify his stance on Brexit, asked what plan he has to ‘get Brexit done’ and also if he would remain neutral if a second referendum was to happen.

He finished the letter by calling on Mr Coaker help get Brexit over the finish line.

He wrote: “My view is that it is wrong to force the people to vote again; wrong to rip up a deal when it’s clear you have no plan; and wrong to play games with our precious union.

“There must be no more dither and delay – we need to get Brexit done and unleash our country’s potential.

Mr Coaker has yet to respond to the letter. Gedling Eye has approached him for a comment.

Gedling Borough Council invests £38k to reopen park in Carlton on brink of permanent closure after spate of vandalism

A park that was on the brink of permanent closure will be reopened today (November 25) thanks to a £38,000 investment from Gedling Borough Council.

The play area on the corner of Carnarvon Grove and Foxhill Road, Carlton was reopened today by the Mayor of Gedling, Councillor Sandra Barnes.

Local school children from Carlton Central Academy were invited to attend the opening to test out the new equipment.

The park closed in July following a spate of vandalism that left it too dangerous to stay open. A decision to close the park indefinitely, on health and safety grounds, was made and discussions took place with senior officers and councillors about the future of the park. The council listened to residents and the local school and took the decision that it would be refurbished rather than close permanently.

Gedling Borough Council has invested £38,000 to improve the park. The old wooden equipment has been replaced by solid steel metal materials, which will last longer and are less likely to be vandalised. The new play area includes new swings, climbing frame, slide, roundabout, rocking horse and a new bench and rubber surfacing.

The Mayor of Gedling, Councillor Sandra Barnes said: “I’m delighted to be opening the refurbished play area. It’s great that the park has been saved and that the local school children have somewhere to play locally.  We listened to the residents and made a decision to invest in the park and provide new equipment which will secure the long term future of the park.”

‘Worthy winner’: Youngster from Arnold is celebrated at awards night for raising awareness of challenges related to dwarfism

A youngster from Arnold who was born with a form of dwarfism has been handed the top gong at a youth awards night after raising thousands of pounds for charities supporting those with the condition.

11-year-old Jasmine Chapman was named as the county-wide winner of this year’s 4Uth awards, which took place on Friday (November 22) at County Hall. The Nottinghamshire Outstanding Achievement 4Uth Award is an annual initiative that celebrates the achievements of young people across the county.

Jasmine, who attends the Richard Bonnington School in the town, was nominated for the award by her pastoral teaching assistant, Grace Collins, after raising nearly three thousand pounds for good causes, including Little People, a charity established by Star Wars star Warwick Davies to help those with the condition.

The youngster, who has achondroplasia, reached out to the star for support and he paid a visit to the school and gave a talk at their assembly about dwarfism. He also recorded a video message praising her work, which was played at the awards night.

In total, Jasmine has raised £1,500 for Little People UK and a further £1,400 for the Dwarf Sports Association UK (DSA UK) by organising a fundraising day called ‘Sport for all’. She again called on celebrity support, this time from Paralympian swimmer Ellie Simmonds, who sent a personalised video, and later met Jasmine.

Sports-mad Jasmine enjoys playing football, swimming and boccia, a sport similar to bowls. This year she joined DSA UK and competed in the National Games in Birmingham, winning several medals.

The Arnold youngster was also praised for her positive attitude in the nomination for the 4Uth award.

Last year she underwent major surgery to help straighten her spine, due to scoliosis. She made a quick recovery, impressing staff at the hospital with her positive outlook, and was soon back doing what she loves best – playing sports.

Councillor Kay Cutts MBE, Leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “Jasmine is an extremely worthy winner, and a wonderful young lady. Her positive attitude is infectious, and she should be very proud of her achievements.

“That she has achieved so much at such a young age, is a credit to her. I am sure others will find her example as inspiring as I do, and I am sure she has a bright future ahead of her.”

“It was a privilege to meet her and present the award. She is so cheerful and confident, letting nothing stand in her way.

“I was very pleased that she and the other young people could join us for the awards evening, so that we could commend them for their accomplishments.”

Councillor Tracey Taylor, Vice-Chairman of the Children and Young People’s Committee, at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “What stood out about Jasmine is her determination. Despite her young age, she has bounced back from any challenge with a smile, resolving to get the most out of life that she possibly can.

“I find it admirable that she overcomes these challenges, taking them in her stride, while also doing so much for other people.

“She is positive, friendly, and always tries her best at whatever she does.”

Man from Carlton seeks support for Christmas party being planned for children in families using foodbanks

A man from Carlton is seeking support from the local community as he plans to put on a Christmas party for children in families using foodbanks in the area.

Mark Dawson hopes to bring festive cheer to children whose families will find it hard at this time of year, due to the financial pressures created by Christmas.

Mr Dawson has a party planned for youngsters on December 23 at St Paul’s Church, between 3-5pm.

The party is to benefit families using the foodbanks in Carlton and Netherfield. The children will get an invite when their families next use the banks.

Co-op in Mapperley backs trio of good causes in Gedling borough with £20k cash boost

Christmas has come early for a trio of good causes that were today awarded a share of over £20k being handed out by a Co-op store in Mapperley.

The Friends of Gedling Country Park, Westdale Infant School and Westdale Pre-School all received a share of the fund, which was raised from donations made when customers make purchases with a membership card in store.

The cheques were today handed out during a ceremony at the Co-op branch on Mapperley Top.

Westdale Pre-School received £6396.44, Westdale Infant School received £6,747.91 and Friends of Gedling Country Park (FGCP) were awarded £7,026.44.

FGCP chairman Terry Lock revealed that the money awarded today would be spent on an exciting new nature trail in the park.

He told Gedling Eye: “We aim to use most of the money to create a new living nature trail in the park. It won’t be using wooden sculptures this time, but it will be created with living nature – like trees and bushes.

People will be able to learn more about the trees planted along the route with a series of plaques. We are looking to plant around 40 to 50 mature native British trees for people to look at.”

The rest of the money will be spent on other projects, including a book celebrating the park environment and also honouring the park’s fifth anniversary next year.”

Maria Narducci is the Co-op member pioneer from Mapperley and organised today’s cheque presentation event.

She is now on the lookout for other good causes who could receive a cash award from future fundraising.

She said: “I really want to build a community network with groups locally that we can support in many ways.

“We don’t just award money but also can help out in other ways, like finding them meeting spaces in the local area and offering advice.

“I’m now actively looking for other good causes people in the community want us to support. If you run one or know of a cause we can help, get in touch via our social media channels.”

The £20,170 awarded today was raised by customers using their co-op membership cards.

Customers can pay £1 to obtain a card and then go online to decide what a percentage donated when they buy Co-op’s own products goes towards.

You can get in touch with Maria by joining the Whats on Mapperley Facebook Group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2371354096515597/ or emailing her at maria.narducci@coopmembers.co.uk
