Teenagers charged after ‘kitchen knives were found in bags’ in Carlton

Two teenagers have been charged after police swiftly responded to a report of a group of youths suspected to be carrying knives in Carlton.

Officers were called to Station Road at around 5pm on Saturday (20 March 2021) and arrived within minutes. Members of the group ran off but two of the suspects were detained after a brief foot chase.

Kitchen knives were found in both of their bags and they were arrested.

Two boys aged 15 and 16, who can’t be named for legal reasons, were subsequently charged with possession of a knife in a public place.

They were both released on conditional bail and are due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on March 31, 2021.

Inspector Chris Pearson, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “As a force we take all reports involving knives extremely seriously and work really hard to take as many weapons as possible of our streets and to educate people on the dangers of carrying a knife.

“We will not tolerate people carrying knives in Nottinghamshire and we will always look to take action against those who are found to commit such offences.

“We all need to work together to combat knife crime and we’re urging anyone with information on knife crime in their local community to call Nottinghamshire Police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. In an emergency, always dial 999.”

Aldi recognises Mapperley worker for acts of kindness during pandemic on anniversary of national lockdown

Aldi has recognised one of its workers at their Mapperley store for carrying out acts of kindness during the pandemic.

Laura Linford from Mapperley, a Store Assistant at Aldi’s Woodborough Road store, is being celebrated by the supermarket-giant for helping overs during the past year.

After finding out the UK was heading into its second full lockdown, Laura and her family decided they wanted to do something to make a difference in their local community during this challenging time.

To help support those in need, Laura completed a sponsored 100km walk with her family and their dog. All money raised was used to buy food donations for their local Trussell Trust foodbank.

To mark the anniversary of the UK’s first national lockdown, Aldi has decided to recognise amazing colleagues across the country who have gone above and beyond to support their local community.

Kara Greatorex , regional managing director at Aldi UK, said: “The past year has been incredibly difficult for everyone and we want to thank every single one of our Aldi colleagues for their hard work and commitment throughout.

“Our amazing colleagues across the country are devoted to feeding the nation and have worked tirelessly over the last year, going above and beyond to support their local communities.”

Police in Gedling borough launch clampdown on catalytic converter thefts which are rising

Police have launched a crackdown to tackle catalytic converter thefts in Gedling borough – with four being stolen over one week.

The increase in these thefts across the borough is also a national, and even an international issue, as the catalytic converters contain two valuable metals, rhodium and palladium. The cost of which increased during 2020, and has recently gone up again.

Hybrid cars are particularly vulnerable because their converters are cleaner, which means the metals inside them are less likely to corrode.

It is believed gangs operate looking for cars to target as they can steal the catalytic convertors within minutes by using a few basic tools.

Nottinghamshire Police is investigating this series of incidents with the aim of flushing out the criminals locally.

Investigations under Operation Yachtsman will see detectives from CID and intelligence working with the borough’s neighbourhood and response officers to share information and take an intelligence driven and targeted approach to offenders and hotspots.

Detective Chief Inspector Nick Waldram, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Operation Yachtsman is our dedicated response to the rise we’ve been seeing in catalytic converter thefts as we are absolutely determined as a force to crack down on this issue.

“Officers from various departments will be working closely together to take a targeted approach to catalytic converter thefts, and importantly to share information which will help and assist us with tracking down those responsible.

catalytic convertor

“We are keeping an open mind when it comes to any intelligence around this but we do believe this is organised criminal activity and our officers are working tirelessly to investigate these offences and bring those responsible to justice.

“During the previous spike towards the end of 2019, we saw cars being targeted mainly in large car parks. However, with Covid and less people parking to go to work during lock down, the criminals shifted to residential areas instead and as a consequence a large proportion of the catalytic converter thefts we’re investigating now have taken place outside people’s homes.”

He is now urging people to be vigilant and if they spot anything suspicious to call 999 immediately as this will be treated as a crime in progress.

“Whilst we are focusing on the investigation of these offences, we have also put in place extra patrols in some of the area we know to be repeat locations,” added DCI Waldram.

“We are determined to find those that are responsible. If you see someone acting suspiciously under a vehicle, report it. Obtain as much information as possible, including any vehicle registrations.

“Victims of catalytic converter thefts are left with costly repair bills and without a car, something which can have a huge impact on their lives and leaves them unable to get to work or make important journeys.

“Thieves target them because they contain high value metals and can be taken incredibly quickly. However, there are a number of things vehicle owners can do to offer themselves further protection if they don’t have a garage, and we are also asking vehicle owners to take note of these.

“The first thing to do is to find out where your catalytic converter is located on your car. If it’s at the front then park with the bonnet towards a wall if possible. If it’s at the back, park with your exhaust to the wall.

“Avoid parking half on the pavement and half on the road as this may make it easier for thieves to get under your car.

“If your catalytic converter is bolted on, you can ask your local garage to weld the bolts to make it more difficult to remove. You can even purchase a ‘cage clamp’, a device which makes converters more difficult to remove.”

Another option for drivers is to ask their garage or dealership to fit a tilt sensor, which activates an alarm if anyone tries to jack the vehicle up to steal the converter.

Nottinghamshire Police received four reports of catalytic converter thefts in the Gedling borough between Tuesday (March 9, 2021) and Friday (March 12, 2021).

The incidents, which are currently being treated as linked, happened in Florence Road, Gedling, and in First Avenue, Moreland Court and South View Road in Carlton.

During the South View Road incident, which happened shortly after 9pm on Thursday, March 11, 2021, the victim disturbed offenders after seeing them go underneath his car holding a battery-operated saw in an attempt to take the catalytic converter.

Anyone spotting a crime in progress is urged to ring 999. Anyone with any other information is asked to ring 101, or report it anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111

CCTV to tackle anti-social behaviour at Conway Road Recreation Ground, Carlton

A new CCTV camera has been installed in a Carlton park in an effort to clamp down on anti-social behaviour.

The camera will monitor Conway Road Recreation Ground in a bid to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.

The camera, which cost £19,500, covers the whole of the recreation ground, including the children’s play area, which opened in August 2020, and features equipment such as slides, roundabouts, multi play units and swings.

The camera will be controlled and monitored from the council’s CCTV room based in Arnold.

Conway Road is the latest site to benefit from new CCTV equipment installed by the council and follows a number of new cameras installed in the borough over the last 12 months to make communities safer.

Leader of Gedling Borough Council, Councillor John Clarke said; “We’ve listened to residents’ concerns and we have installed this CCTV to help reduce crime and anti-social behaviour on and around Conway Road. We’ve seen the success of cameras in other areas of the borough to reduce these types of issues and we expect the camera will have the same effect here.

We recently opened a new play area on Conway Road and we want to ensure that residents can take their families there and feel safe. One of the council’s main priorities is to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour and help strengthen our communities and this camera will make a big contribution to that priority.”

Wilkinsons launches in-store face mask recycling scheme at stores in Arnold and Carlton

A new in-store face mask recycling scheme has been launched at discount store Wilkinsons, which has a branches in Arnold and Carlton.

Customers will be able to drop off used, disposable face masks so that they can be recycled and reused as everything from building materials to new furniture for communities in need.

Once full, these collection bins are then taken away by recycling specialists ReWorked, who together with Metrisk Ltd, Scan2Recycle and wilko are partnering to make the unique scheme – the first of its kind on the UK high street – possible.

Collected masks will be shredded down into raw materials, which can be sustainably refashioned into products ranging from other safety materials for businesses, to building materials and even quality, durable public space furniture.

Wilkinsons say that while the government has encouraged Brits to dispose of face masks via general waste bins, there has been an ever-increasing volume of PPE being discarded in public spaces – meaning there are often greater levels of litter in areas such as parks, beaches and high streets; impacting the life and leisure time of local communities, endangering wildlife and ultimately harming the health of the planet.

Disposable face masks are made from polypropylene fabric – a type of plastic. An estimated 8M tonnes of general plastic waste already ended up in the world’s oceans every year, and the impact of the pandemic will only increase those figures if PPE litter continues to increase.

Jerome Saint Marc, CEO at Wilkinsons, said: “One of our core values is to show we care and, we understand the importance of climate change to our customers who expect us to take-action on their behalf and make better choices about caring for the environment.

“That’s why we’re thrilled to have developed this scheme, which makes it super simple for shoppers to safely recycle a product which is often unavoidably discarded as a result of us all taking steps to protect the health of everyone around us. What’s more, it also means we’re able to help hardworking families, local communities and other businesses by turning something that we’re simply throwing away into a useful and sustainable product that can have a genuinely positive impact.”

The scheme is the latest in an ongoing series of measures which wilko is implementing to make a positive difference to the environment; the retailer has pledged to reach Net Zero Carbon by 2040 by signing the BRC’s Climate Action Roadmap and has joined The UK Plastics Pact, which focuses solely on reducing the use of single use plastic.

For more information on disposable mask recycling at wilko and which of the retailer’s stores are taking part, visit https://www.wilko.com/face-mask-recycling. This scheme is a pilot and will run for three months from 1st April.
