Match Report: Carlton Town FC 2 – 0 Quorn

FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round Replay – August 8 2023

First half goals from Greg Tempest and Romello Nangle saw Carlton Town progress in the FA Cup following a 2-0 victory against Quorn.

The Millers had been five minutes from exiting the competition three days earlier but Musa Ndaw Jawara’s late equaliser at Farley Way earned the Millers an Extra-Preliminary Round replay and they took full advantage with an assured performance that fully merited the win, despite some late Quorn pressure.

Carlton named an unchanged starting eleven for the replay.  Quorn on the other hand made six changes to their starting line up but Cain Noble, who played one game for Carlton on loan from Nuneaton last season, retained his spot in the side.  Another ex-Miller, Charlie Marzano, was on the bench.  Former manager Wayne Scott was a welcome spectator amongst the fine midweek crowd of 160.

On an excellent playing surface the Millers started on the front foot and had Quorn pinned in their own half for long periods of the first half.  Lamin Manneh in particular was causing problems for the visitors and was the recipient of several industrial challenges as the Foxhunters struggled to deal with him.

On a rare Quorn attack, Paddy Webb was excellently dispossessed by Dan Brown shortly before Carlton opened the scoring.   Manneh was once again involved, darting forward before being brought down on the edge of the box by Tom Hilton, earning the Quorn man a yellow card.  Up stepped Tempest to fire home a delicious free kick and stake an early claim for goal of the season.

Quorn did briefly respond and Jack Samples fired just over the bar after Felix Annan had punched clear before Webb was unlucky when his effort from outside the box hit the top of the crossbar.

The Millers though kept up the pressure and doubled their lead on the half hour when Nangle headed home unmarked after Dean Freeman had flicked on a Lewis Durow throw in.

The visitors threatened to attack with a quick counter attack following an Annan free kick but Manneh sprinted fully 50 yards back to dispossess Reece Fyfe and then draw a foul from the same player.

Moment later David Adegbola surged down the right before sending over a delightful cross that was met by a Manneh header that drew a fine save from Charlie Woods.

Annan had to be off his line quickly to deal with an early second half break by Quorn before Manneh fired just wide at the other end.  Annan then showed some neat control in sidestepping Fyfe before clearing.

Hilton brought down Manneh with another crunching foul on the left touchline.  The referee’s decision not to issue a second yellow card saw Tommy Brookbanks remonstrate with the officials with the end result that he was shown two yellow cards in quick succession and sent off.  It didn’t escape anyone’s attention that while this was going on, Quorn substituted Hilton no doubt to avoid him being sent off the next time he brought down Manneh.

The final 20 minutes of the game saw the visitors push Carlton back as they searched for a way back into the tie.  Annan did well to save from Noble on the right and then produced a stunning save from Saturday’s Quorn goalscorer Tyrell Shannon-Lewis.

Pat Zito headed over from close range and Annan saved once again, this time from Marzano as the Carlton defence held firm to book a home tie against Maltby Main or Pinchbeck Utd in the next round.

Carlton Town: F Annan, D Adegbola, L Durow, D Brown, D Freeman, G Tempest, L Manneh, K Sargent (M Ford 71), R Nangle (M Jawara 46), A Howes, N Hylton (S Thompson-Harris 79).  Unused subs: N Liburd-Hines, N Davie, L Sisawo-Danso, O Gee

New scheme means more services now available at local pharmacies in Gedling borough

People needing medical care across in Gedling borough will now be able to get professional clinical advice and treatment at a place more convenient for them as part of an extended service agreement between community pharmacists and NHS England in the Midlands.

The agreement covers a variety of minor illnesses including urinary tract infections (UTIs) and some skin infections.

More than 400 community pharmacists in the East Midlands have signed the agreement, and completed the necessary training requirements, and patients needing clinical advice can check if their local pharmacist is taking part at NHS England — Midlands » Pharmacies offering Extended Care Services

The majority of pharmacists involved in the service are able to treat women aged between 16 and 65 with simple UTIs as well as children aged from three months to two years who present with acute bacterial conjunctivitis.

Pharmacists can also treat skin infections including impetigo, infected eczema and infected insect bites. Some pharmacists can now also treat otitis media in children aged from three months to 16 years. This is an infection in the middle ear and particularly common in young children.

There have been almost 3,000* consultations to the service since it launched in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire in early 2021.

Pharmacists can supply medicines to treat the conditions, or recommend the purchase of over the counter medicines. If people are exempt from paying for prescriptions, they won’t have to pay for medicines that would normally be prescribed by the GP.

Lucy Dadge, Director of Integration at NHS Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, said: “This is a massive step forward in making treatment more accessible for people in local surroundings and empowering pharmacists to offer clinical care to their communities.

“We have been delighted with the number of community pharmacists who have taken up the extended services agreement. Pharmacists are already carrying out clinical checks such as blood pressure and vaccinations for flu and Covid-19. People can also use community pharmacists to manage their oral contraceptives, which means they don’t need to visit their GP.”

Emma Anderson, Pharmacist Independent Prescriber, from Evans Pharmacy in East Leake said: “I am passionate about providing good access to care. I enjoy providing the extended care service because it allows me to do more for people. It is very well received by people who use this service. This has led to requests for prescribing for common conditions and a chance to extend the scope of my clinical practice. I also use this as an opportunity to promote the NHS hypertension case finding service and the NHS contraception services to relevant people who use the extended care service.”

Gedling primary school scoops county cup crown

It has been a season of success in the borough for one talented primary school.

Stanhope Primary, in Gedling village, reached the finals of the county cup football competition with both their girl’s and boy’s teams, with the girls going on to take the crown.

Years five and six were competing.

The amazing achievements of both teams were recognised by sporting royalty, with the pupils having a video message from Carl Froch, as well as a special assembly with England international Sophie Bradley-Auckland.

Nathan Kenney, Year 2 teacher and P.E coordinator at Stanhope, said: “I just wanted to shine a light on our boy’s and girl’s football teams.

“I’ve taught here for seven years and the furthest we have got is a boy’s quarter final last year.

“This year both teams made it to the final with the girl’s going on to win despite only one girl playing regular football outside of school.

PHOTO: Stanhope Primary

“No other school have managed to get both girl’s and boy’s teams into the final in the same year.”

There were over 40 schools involved, 20 each for both the boy’s and girl’s competitions.

Both teams were unbeaten on their way to the final.

Amanda Richards, headteacher at Stanhope Primary, said: “We are immensely impressed by the achievements of both of our football teams.

“They pulled together to play some amazing football and made the whole school community proud.”

Nathan also runs a girls only session on Mondays, from 6 to 7pm, as part of Mapperley All Stars coaching.

Streamlining Success: Hiring a Virtual Assistant for Your Amazon Business

As we sail into the robust digital age, Amazon businesses are venturing beyond traditional horizons, hungry for transformative methods to refine their e-commerce ventures. Amid this landscape, the Virtual Assistant (VA) emerges as a potent ally, propelling businesses towards greater efficiency and unprecedented growth.

Operational Efficiency:

Navigating the intricate maze of Amazon’s day-to-day operations can be akin to orchestrating a grand symphony; there’s beauty in the chaos, but only if every note, or in this case, every task, is perfectly timed and executed. Enter the Virtual Assistant. By adeptly handling the minutiae – from inventory checks, order verifications, to the seemingly mundane administrative tasks – a VA ensures your business purrs like a finely tuned machine. They seamlessly bridge any operational gaps, creating a fluid, well-oiled business model. As Amazon’s brand essence revolves around streamlined efficiency, a VA embodies this, ensuring your enterprise mirrors this gold standard. Amazowl empowers e-commerce businesses with cutting-edge solutions that elevate their sales strategies to new heights.

Product Research and Sourcing:

The Amazon marketplace is ever-evolving, pulsating with trends that ebb and flow. While it’s tempting to dive into this tide, discerning which waves to ride requires finesse. Here, the VA emerges as a sagacious guide. With a keen eye on market oscillations, VAs unveil trending products, dissect competitor strategies, and scout for stellar suppliers. They aren’t just operating on the surface; they’re deep-diving into data, ensuring your business is always a step ahead, riding the crest of the e-commerce wave.

Listing Optimisation and Marketing:

In the vast Amazonian sea, a product’s sparkle can be easily overshadowed if not spotlighted correctly. Think of your product as a gem, and the VA, your jeweller, meticulously crafting a setting that makes it dazzle. Through precise product titles, compelling descriptions, and captivating images, they ensure your product doesn’t just blend in – it stands out. But that’s not all; VAs are also your marketing mavens. Whether orchestrating a compelling  amazon PPC agency weaving the magic of promotional events, they elevate your brand, ensuring it resonates amid the cacophony of competitors.

Customer Support and Feedback Management:

In the grand theatre of e-commerce, customers are not just the audience; they’re the critics whose reviews can make or break a show. Amazon’s ethos is deeply rooted in customer-centricity, and a VA ensures this ethos is reverberated in every interaction. By swiftly addressing queries, pacifying concerns, and ensuring feedback metamorphoses into actionable insights, VAs cultivate a nurturing ecosystem. Each customer becomes a cherished guest, their experiences refined to mirror the premium standards Amazon is celebrated for.

Time and Cost Savings:

Beyond the allure of operational brilliance, the pragmatic benefits of hiring a VA cannot be overlooked. Consider this: the overheads of a full-time employee, from benefits to office space, can weigh down the entrepreneurial spirit. A VA, on the other hand, emerges as an economically astute alternative. Working remotely, yet always connected, they negate these additional costs. Furthermore, by juggling diverse tasks, VAs gift you something invaluable – time. Time to envision, to strategise, and to weave the tapestry of your Amazonian dream.

In the grand tapestry of e-commerce, the VA isn’t just a thread; they’re the skilled artisan weaving patterns of success. As Amazon businesses soar to new pinnacles, the Virtual Assistant remains the wind beneath their wings, propelling them to ascend ever higher. The question isn’t whether you need a VA; it’s how soon can you integrate one into your epic Amazonian journey.

Man arrested for string of thefts at Nottingham pubs after Mapperley purse theft

Police investigating a string of thefts from Nottingham pubs have arrested a suspect after a purse was stolen in Mapperley

Five pubs in the city centre were targeted between 16 July and 1 August, with a handbag containing personal belongings such as cash and bank cards stolen on each occasion.

Following inquiries, the incidents were linked to the theft of a rucksack from a city centre hotel on 20 July, as well as the theft of a purse at a sandwich shop in Mapperley on the same day.

The perpetrator is believed to have attempted to make a number of transactions using bank cards stolen across the spate of incidents.

On Friday (4 August), officers from the city centre’s Operation Compass team spotted a suspect wanted in connection with the investigation.

The 57-year-old was arrested and taken into custody, where he was questioned in relation to seven thefts and seven frauds by false representation.

He was later bailed, with conditions, while the investigation continues.

T/Detective Sergeant Toni Smithurst, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Our officers worked quickly to carry out their inquiries and I’m glad that a suspect has been arrested.

“Opportunist thieves need to be warned that we have a number of methods to track them down and we will do everything we can to bring them to justice.

“When it comes to cracking down on those blighting our communities, we also need your help.

“Your knowledge could help us identify and arrest more criminals – so please, come forward, report it and allow us to act.”

If you have information on crime happening in your area call 101, or in an emergency always dial 999.

You can also make an anonymous report to Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111.

Flyers, tumblers and pyramids: Cheerleading goes ‘full-out’ in Arnold

Starbound Cheerleading was officially opened in April 2021 by Jenny Gilbert and since then it has gone from strength to strength.

Readers that are familiar with this popular sport or have watched ‘Cheer’ on Netflix will recognise terminology such as ‘Flyers’, ‘Tumblers’ and ‘Pyramids’ and if you ever fancied trying it out, whether young or old Starbound Cheerleading is on your doorstep in Arnold.

Gedling Eye caught up with Jenny Gilbert, Director & Head Coach at Starbound Cheerleading to hear her story and how terms like ‘Arabesque’ and ‘Spotter’ can be heard on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Arnold.

Jenny told us that she grew up in Arnold and attended Coppice Farm Primary and Arnold Hill School and lived in Arnold until the age of 18.

She went to live in Canada for a while before going to Aberystwyth University in Wales, where she joined the Cheerleading squad and found her love for Cheerleading.

Whilst there Jenny competed regularly in cheerleading competitions and taught cheerleading classes in a secondary school.

Jenny said “I formed Starbound Cheerleading and officially opened in April 2021. I had planned for classes to begin in 2020 and was ready to go, but then sadly covid hit and shut us all down!

“So by the time we were safely allowed to meet, there were lots of people looking for things like this to take part in.

“The aim of Starbound Cheerleading is to allow more people to experience the joy and benefits of the sport, including those who may worry their skills aren’t good enough to try out for bigger teams.”

Starbound Cheerleading started with two small recreational teams in Arnold for ages 6+, Galaxy and Moonlight. These are still running and have proved popular.

Since then Starbound Cheerleading has grown and now also have more coaches, two school teams in Nottingham and an adult competition team that train in Arnold every Tuesday.

Jenny added “Our adult masters team, Starbound Supanovas, only formed last year and we have just competed and come 2nd  in our first ever competition in May. We are now on the lookout for more members with plans to compete in 2 competitions this coming season.

“Supanovas is a very important part of Starbound Cheerleading and our aims as a sports program.

“Whether they used to be part of a team when they were younger, or have never done it before, many people over the age of 25 see themselves as now too old to be a cheerleader, particularly competitively. I always wanted to put together a team that shows that is not the case.

“A masters team is made up with a majority of members being over 25, but there are not a huge amount of masters teams around, and our members come from all over Nottingham and some even from outside Nottingham to be a part of the team.

“Cheerleading is a really fun team sport that brings people and communities together, teaches confidence and sportsmanship and is a fantastic way to stay fit and strong, and it is for everyone!”

As well as plans for Supanovas, Jenny’s next mission this year is to begin a junior competition squad. This is for ages 8-14 and they are looking for members who may want to try out for that too.

If you are hosting a community event, or similar Jenny and the team(s) would love to attend.

The adult team train on Tuesday evenings at Christ The King School Sports Hall on Darlton Drive NG5 7JZ while the recreational teams train on Thursday evenings at BKS Martial Arts and Fitness on Newstead Industrial Estate, Brookfield Road NG5 8ER.

If you’re interested in joining any of the teams or have any queries you can get in touch via their Facebook social media page HERE or through the website at www.starboundcheerleading.com.

How to choose the best retirement investments

Did you know, planning for your retirement can involve several different components? One which requires much consideration is the type of investments you choose to build your wealth for when you retire.

But how can you take the right approach to your investments to secure a comfortable retirement?

The answer to this question can be found below, where we take you through the importance of expert advice when investing for retirement, as well as some investments worth considering when exploring how to grow your savings effectively.

Retirement planning professionals

One of the first things to consider when looking to optimise your investments for retirement is the wide range of benefits a retirement planning service can offer you.

This service can allow you to receive expert advice from a modern wealth manager, who not only has vast experience in various aspects of retirement but can help you take the most tax-efficient approach to building your wealth for the next stage in your life.

Your adviser can ensure you receive tailored advice that fits your unique financial situation. They can discuss every component of your finances with you, including things like your income, outgoings, current financial dependants, retirement goals, and any challenges you might be facing.

Their full analysis of your situation can allow them to make the right recommendations for your investment approach, tailored to you, your goals and your current financial situation, giving you the best chance of a successful financial outcome when you retire.

Investments to build your retirement savings

There are many investments you could explore to grow your retirement savings, but below we’ll discuss two which can be most effective when implemented in your retirement plan.

Personal pension

A personal pension allows you to grow your savings tax-efficiently for retirement, in an account which you have full control over.

With these pensions, you can decide which investments are made with your money, and make contributions when it suits you.

To open a personal pension, it’s best to find an expert provider, such as a modern wealth management service.

With their planning service, you can contribute the right amounts at certain times, to not only build your wealth effectively, but do so in a way that aligns with your financial circumstance.

Your adviser can help you make the most of your annual pension allowance – which as of the current 2023/2024 tax year is £60,000 – for maximum savings.

Your adviser can also help you plan your contributions with your retirement goals in mind, for a more purposeful and focused direction for your approach.

Individual Savings Accounts

You can also consider investing in Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs), as another tax-efficient way to save for retirement.

These accounts allow you to save a certain amount of money each year and shelter the money from tax. The amount you can save is dependent on the ISA allowance – which is currently £20,000.

There are two types of ISAs you can invest in for retirement.

A cash ISA lets you save money tax-free each year, and over time, this can give you a significant lump sum to withdraw in retirement.

You can also invest in a stocks and shares ISA, which not only lets you save money, but invest it in various securities to potentially grow your wealth.

Any growth that results from your successful investments will also be exempt from Capital Gains Tax and income tax.

By utilising these accounts effectively – preferably with your financial experts – you can build further savings alongside your pension to help you attain your goals when you retire.

Have you learned more about the type of investments you could explore to build your wealth effectively for retirement? Whichever investments you choose to make, consider speaking to a modern wealth management service to help refine your approach.

Please note, the value of your investments can go down as well as up.
