Match Report: Linby Colliery Welfare FC 4 – 1 Meden Vale Colts

Notts FA Senior Trophy (7 October 2023)

An earlier kick-off was seen at Church Lane this past Saturday afternoon as Linby CW (Central Midlands Alliance Premier South) and Meden Vale Colts (Notts Senior League Division One) battled it out in the opening round of the Nottinghamshire FA Senior Trophy.

Linby boss, Matt Peberday, made a couple of changes to his starting eleven ahead of kick-off, Connor Gillan replacing the ill Josh Wass, whilst new signing, Jack Smith, recently joining from Hucknall, also started.

Both sides had chances in the opening quarter of the contest, each looking to get a foothold in the tie with Dylan Walker heading wide of Wigglesworth upright in the opening minutes before J Smith volleyed an effort at Jack Walker in the home goal; Walker would push the effort onto his crossbar before catching the rebound.

Smith came close to opening his account for Linby minutes later, Wigglesworth though equal to it, before calls for a penalty for the hosts are waved away by the referee after Walker was seemingly brought down in the penalty area.

With 25 minutes on the clock, the deadlock was finally broken as Patrick Stefaniak and Ashdon Bernard combined well on the left flank, the visitors failed to deal with the resulting cross and Mason Moore fired home his first of the afternoon from ten yards out.

Minutes later and Moore was at it again, doubling both his, and Linby’s tally when he knicked the ball off the toes of the Meden Vale defence, saw his first effort saved by Wigglesworth, but followed up quickest to net the rebound.

A third was added ten minutes before the interval, Linby threatening to run away with the game in the first half; a miskick from ‘keeper Wigglesworth was fired back into the net from debutant Smith, the hosts finding themselves three goals to the good.

Shortly before the interval and the visitors pulled a goal back, an initial shot from L Jepson was saved by Walker in the home goal, however, the Meden Vale man was first to the rebound to afford the NSL side a glimmer of hope.

Moore’s afternoon was wrapped up just after hour mark when Peberday replaced him with Mitchell Slawson to freshen the attack up a little, and that move paid instant dividends for the CMA outfit; Slawson, within minutes of taking to the field, played the ball through to Ashdon Bernard, and he proceeded to lob the hosts’ fourth of the afternoon over the advancing Wigglesworth.

It would be a killer goal, putting an end to any hopes the visiting Meden Vale had, as Linby CW took their place in the next round of the Senior Trophy on the back of a comfortable, 4-1 home win.

Appeal aires on BBC Crimewatch over ‘brutal murder’ of man whose remains were found in field near Ravenshead after he vanished 56 years ago

Detectives investigating the murder of a man whose remains were found buried in a field near Ravenshead more than 50 years after he went missing have made an appeal for information on BBC One’s Crimewatch Live.

Alfred Swinscoe, aged 54 at the time, was last seen drinking at the Miners Arms in Pinxton in early 1967 and was then never seen again.

His remains were found in Coxmoor Lane this April when digging work was being carried out on farmland.

Alfred worked at Langton Colliery from the age of 14 and was last seen at work on January 20, 1967.

He was ‘a cutter’ known for operating a machine that cut large chunks of coal out of the coal face for others to then break down.

He had the nickname of ‘Sparrow’ and was known as the “Champion Pigeon Man of Pinxton” due to his love of pigeon racing.

Four of his six children are still alive and he has a number of grandchildren.

Detectives are continuing to build up a picture of Alfred’s life, his past acquaintances, and a chronological order of what happened the night he went missing.

It is believed that Alfred was drinking with his two sons and friends on the night of his disappearance.

He was last seen at around 10.30pm when he gave his son some money to buy a round and then left to use the outside toilet. He never returned.

Detectives believe Alfred was killed and then buried in farmland around four to 6ft deep.

There were a number of traumatic injuries found on his skeletal remains, which are undergoing further analysis.

Further tests are also being carried out to determine how he was killed.

On today’s (9) Crimewatch Live, Alfred’s family made a plea for answers as a dramatic reconstruction shows Alfred’s last known movements.

Detectives also appeared on the programme to reveal how specialist scientists were used to identify Alfred’s remains and the latest in the hunt for whoever killed him.

Detective Inspector Mel Crutchley, who is leading the investigation, said: “We are determined to find out what happened to Alfred and provide his family with the closure they desperately need.

“His killer left them with decades of unanswered questions about what happened to their loved one.

“We have been following several lines of inquiry since identifying the human remains as Alfred Swinscoe but we really need the public’s help due to the amount of time that has passed since the murder and his body being found.

“We know that his killer or killers would have driven to the Coxmoor Lane site by vehicle. This is significant as in 1967 not many people had access to a car in the Pinxton community.

“We have spoken to a number of people who knew Alfred to build up a picture of his life before he died.

“However, after the colliery closed, we know many people will have left Pinxton and moved to other parts of the country and even overseas.

“These are the people we need to speak to who may have the vital information we need.

“If you lived in Pinxton around the time of Alfred going missing on January 20, 1967, we need to hear from you.

“Whatever information you have, no matter how small about Alfred’s disappearance, please get in touch with us immediately. “

Prolific thief jailed after stealing handbags worth hundreds of pounds from Netherfield TK Maxx store

A prolific thief who stole handbags worth hundreds of pounds from a store in Netherfield has been jailed.

Dean Earl was eventually arrested when he was spotted by neighbourhood police while they were carrying out a shoplifting operation in Wollaton.

He had just filled his jacket with meat products when he ran into plain clothed officers as he tried to leave without paying.

Unbeknownst to the 42-year-old, Broxtowe officers from the City West Neighbourhood Policing team had been watching his every move inside Co-op in Lambourne Drive, Wollaton.

Earl was quickly detained by the officers after a quick search found he had around £100 worth of stolen stock under his coat.

A check on the system revealed Earl was actually wanted in connection with three other shop thefts as well.

Two different TK Maxx stores were targeted as part of the shoplifting spree, with Earl firstly swiping four handbags – worth £200 – from the shelves of a store in Victoria Retail Park on June 22, 2023.

He then made two separate visits to the branch in Giltbrook Retail Park, Giltbrook, on 4 and July 8 – once again stealing handbags on both occasions that were worth around £220.

Earl, of no fixed address, was brought before Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 29 September, where he pleaded guilty to four counts of theft.

He was then sentenced to a total of 56 days in prison for his crimes.

PC Sam Yallop, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We understand how much of a negative impact shoplifting can have on businesses and in turn people’s livelihoods too, which is why we carry out regular operations like the one used in this instance.

“It is really important that we work closely with shops in our communities to identify and stop those who try to steal, and this was a great example of this approach working, as well as the effectiveness of using officers in plain clothes.

“Thanks to this operation, we were able to catch a prolific shop thief in the act and link him to a series of other thefts he was outstanding for too.

“As a result, Earl has now been put before the courts and taken off the streets after being given some prison time, so this was a really pleasing result.”

Seven arrested and two in hospital after street fight in Mapperley

Neither is believed to have sustained injuries that are life-threatening or life-altering.

Shortly after the incident was reported, police identified and detained a group of suspects in Carlton Road, Bakersfield, and Lower Parliament Street, in Nottingham City Centre.

Six men and one woman were subsequently arrested on suspicion of affray, possession of a bladed article and possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply.

Chief Inspector Chris Pearson, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Two people had to be taken to hospital following this incident, which took place in the street and will have been seen by a number of people.

“As we work to understand exactly what happened, we will continue to speak with those witnesses as our investigation continues.

“We have now arrested seven people in connection with this incident, and hope the speed of our response provides some reassurance to the public about just how seriously we take reports of this nature.”

Anyone who has any information about what happened, or has any mobile phone footage of the incident is asked to call 101, quoting incident number 442 of 7 October 2023, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The Inn for a Penny is set to be refurbished by owners Greene King and brought under their new Hive Pubs umbrella.

The brewery say Hive pubs are operated by franchisees who have local knowledge and experience of running a pub, bringing their individual know-how to the Hive pub to deliver the best customer experience.

In a statement released last month, Greene King said: “The Inn for a Penny at Carlton is soon to be fully refurbished and brought under the Hive Pubs umbrella.

“Hive Pubs operate at the heart of the local community and offer an excellent drinks range, classic pub food, and a stunning garden, with sports and entertainment at the heart of the offer.

“The full refurbishment will improve the kerb appeal of the pub with all new signage, lighting and planting. Inside, we will zone the pub efficiently, so there is space for pub sports, socialising, dining and a live acts area.

“TV screens will be strategically placed, to ensure the best viewing experience without dominating.

“The pub will be fully redecorated, with new lighting, flooring and bric a brac. The garden will feature a covered pergola, with lose and fixed seating, as well as a children’s play area.”

Match Report: Nuneaton Borough 1 – 0 Carlton Town FC

FA Trophy Third Round Qualifying – October 7, 2023

A Matthew Stenson strike in the last minute saw Carlton Town eliminated from the FA Trophy following a 1-0 defeat at Nuneaton Borough.

Stenson’s strike on the turn from the edge of the box flew into the top corner and was out of keeping in what was a low key encounter between sides meeting for the second time this season in FA competitions.

Carlton had of course won at Liberty Way in the FA Cup last month but there was to be no repeat of the upset in the FA Trophy.  And whilst the Millers will be disappointed not to have taken the game to a penalty shoot out, their cup successes this season have already left them with a backlog of games in the league as they have slipped from 3rd to 11th in the table due to only playing one league game since August.  So they now have the opportunity to very much “concentrate on the league”.

The Millers made three changes to the side which lost at Hebburn last time out.  Shea Thompson-Harris started ahead of David Adegbola, Khyle Sargent returned in place of the injured Greg Tempest and Romello Nangle started up front with Michael Ford dropping to the bench.

Joint Manager Mark Harvey speaks to CTFC TV after the last minute defeat at Nuneaton in the trophy.

On a very warm afternoon there was an early injury to Nuneaton’s Kyle Storer which saw the player treated for 10 minutes on the pitch before being deemed fit to carry on.  What few chances there were in a tepid first period generally fell to the home side.  Felix Annan made an excellent save from Owen Oseni on 24 minutes after he was set up by Leroy Lita.

Carlton responded and Nangle fired just wide twice in quick succession, the second after Sargent had won the ball well in midfield.

Oseni hit another effort high over the bar while Boro goalkeeper Daniel Jezeph did well to hold onto a goalbound Alex Hardwick cross.

A quick break down the left saw Lita draw a wonderful save from Annan, diving to his right to deny the striker.  Carlton also had a couple of opportunities late on in the half but Niall Davie put a couple of free kicks over the bar as did Lamin Manneh after some neat passing with Davie and Alex Howes.

Lewis Durow had Carlton’s first effort of the second half but he fired over the top from fully 30 yards before Nuneaton went closest to scoring midway through the half when Storer’s angled drive from the right hit the crossbar.

Substitute Niall Hylton caused some problems for Boro down the right which earned the Millers a corner.  Howes flicked Davie’s cross just over.

Dan Brown, along with Dean Freeman having their usual fine games at the back for Carlton, the won the ball and played it to Sargent.  His pass set Howes away down the middle.  He beat Victor Nirennold before hitting a screamer from 25 yards that beat Jezeph but crashed against the angle of post and bar.  The ball came back to Sargent who crossed for Hardwick to head home but Carlton’s delight at the goal was cut short by an offside flag.

Kane Richards and Alexander Lafleur both hit efforts over the top for Nuneaton, whilst Brown was called upon to break up another home attack.

With time running out Annan made another superb save, this time from Stenson, while Liam Bateman, on as a substitute making his debut for Carlton, also hit a free kick over the bar.

Just as it looked as if the game was heading for penalties Stenson popped up with the winner.  Carlton lost the ball in midfield, Lafleur fed Stenson, he cut in from the left and hit his shot on the turn that Annan could do nothing about.

The Millers had six minutes of added time to try to get level but were unable to test Jezeph and bowed out of the Trophy.  There was a little bit of handbags on the final whistle and following that the players came across to thank the small travelling band of supporters for their efforts.

Carlton Town: F Annan, S Thompson-Harris (L Bateman 61), L Durow (D Adegbola 90), D Brown, D Freeman,  N Davie, L Manneh (N Hylton 61), K Sargent, A Hardwick, A Howes, R Nangle. Unused subs:  M Ford, Z Hill

Goals: Matthew Stenson 90
