Planning: 26m / 86 foot monopole proposed for Bank Hill Farm in Woodborough

An application has been received by Gedling Borough Council from Icon Tower Infrastructure Limited of Lichfield for the proposed development of upgrade to radio mast at Bank Hill Farm, Bank Hill, Woodborough, Nottingham, NG14 6EF.

The application describes the proposed works as ‘The removal of an existing 17.5m monopole mast and associated compound, and the installation of a replacement base station which includes a 26.2m monopole sharable mast, 6no. of 4G antennas and 12no. of 5G antennas, 2no. dishes, 7no. cabinets, etc. Ancillary development thereto. This is needed as the existing mast cannot support the required equipment to improve connectivity.’

Planning documents advise that the new mast will be approx. 86 feet / 26.2m, over 28 feet / 8.7m taller than the existing mast.

Supplementary information provided to Gedling Borough Council planning advises that the proposed mast is the lowest height in which the Operators can continue to provide the required level of coverage to the target area. This proposal, coupled with the complete removal of 1 no. existing mast will make an improvement to visual amenity in the area by condensing the potential number of telecommunications sites to one single mast.

The existing mast cannot support the necessary upgrades and to prevent the proliferation of masts Icon Tower has decided to relocate all existing equipment to one new mast which has the capability for upgrades and the ability to host new and antenna systems and preparing the site for future innovations in telecommunication equipment.

Lowdham & District Village Mens Dart League RESULTS November 8

Last years champions have moved top of the league after four games following a comprehensive 6 – 0 win over The Nags Head from Woodborough.

Calverton’s Admiral Rodney could only draw as they let slip a large lead in the final leg against The Keys from Burton Joyce despite a first 180 of the league season from M Palmer. A win would have put The Admiral Rodney joint top with The Gedling Club.

The league remains tight however in the early stages with only four points separating the top 9 teams.

Pick of the matches in round five on November 15 is undoubtedly second placed Admiral Rodney travelling to Calverton to take on third placed CWMC.

The Knock Out Cup 1st round was held on Wednesday, November 1 with the Admiral Rodney beating CWMC and the Cross Keys Burton Joyce beating The Nags Head – both teams move into the quarter finals on December 13.

The Pairs competition takes place on November 22 at 8.00pm at the CWMC and the draw will be made on the night.

Boots refuses to confirm future of its Carlton Square pharmacy

Health and pharmacy giant Boots has refused to confirm the future of one of its Gedling borough stores amid plans to shut shops across the UK.

The firm announced back in June that 300 of its stores around the country would close in the coming year.

Posts on social media claim that the pharmacy on Carlton Square will close in January 2024.

When asked to clarify the future of the store, Boots refused to confirm whether or not it is under threat – but they insisted no jobs would be lost as a result of any closures.

A spokesperson told Gedling Eye: “We won’t be releasing the store list to ensure that we communicate to team members first, however, I wanted to reassure you that all team members in affected stores will be offered alternative roles.”

In June, the retailer said it would close 300 stores despite posting stronger sales over the latest quarter.

The move, which the company says will mostly affect stores in close proximity to other sites, will reduce its store estate from 2,200 to 1,900.

Boots say there are no proposed redundancies despite the plan, with plans to redeploy affected workers.

A Boots spokeswoman said: “Evolving the store estate in this way allows Boots to concentrate its team members where they are needed and focus investment more acutely in individual stores, with the ambition of consistently delivering an excellent and reliable service in a fresh and up-to-date environment.”

Retail sales across Boots jumped by 13.4 per cent in the three months to the end of May, compared to the same period last year.

It was driven up by a boost in online shoppers with sales on its digital platform surging by a quarter over the latest period.

Police issue warning after cashpoint thefts in Arnold, Gedling and Netherfield

Nottinghamshire Police is urging people to be vigilant following a spate of thefts involving cash machines in Arnold, Gedling and Netherfield.

Four victims were targeted last Monday (6) – resulting in losses of £2,700.

A man in his 70s was targeted as he used a cash machine in Front Street, Arnold. After inserting his card and entering his pin, the machine froze and a man purporting to be a member of staff approached him and said it was broken.

He then advised the customer to return to the branch the next day to retrieve his bank card. When he went back the next day, staff were unaware of the incident and checks found the card had been used to withdraw £1,000 during three cash withdrawals.

Another victim lost £400 in similar circumstances after using a cash machine in Netherfield, while a bankcard was stolen from in a woman in a distraction theft at an ATM in Gedling. In the latter case, the victim was able to cancel the stolen card before it could be used by the thief.

Another man in his late 70s was targeted in West Bridgford on the same day. He was approached by two men who offered to help him, as the machine appeared to have swallowed his card. In the confusion that followed, the two men managed to steal two bankcards from the pensioner, before going on to make two cash withdrawals of £500 and £800.

Detective Sergeant Tara Clapperton, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “An investigation into these incidents is underway and, due to the proximity and timings of the reported thefts, it is likely they are linked.

“We are pursuing various lines of inquiry and are doing everything we can to find those responsible, while offering support and advice to the victims as they seek to apply for their losses to be refunded.

“In the meantime, we are encouraging the public to be vigilant when using ATMs. Cover your PIN and keep an eye on your card at all times. If someone taps you on the shoulder or tries to speak to you, politely say you do not require any assistance.

“When you’ve left the ATM, put your card away immediately. Where possible, consider using an ATM inside a bank branch or shop where staff are present.”

Friday Night Lights – Carlton Town to play first ever Friday night home game over festive season

Carlton Town FC have announced their first ever Friday night home game against Grimsby Borough on Friday, December 29 at 7.45pm.

The fixture scheduled for New Year’s Day has been changed following agreement with Grimsby Borough in what promises to be a special night and a bumper crowd ahead of Nottingham Forest playing Manchester United the following day, Saturday 30th December.

In the lead up to the festive season there is plenty going on at Stoke Lane, Gedling with the big annual Christmas draw to take place on Tuesday, December 19 in the Howard Mitchell Sportsbar. Everyone who would like to support the club either by donating prizes or selling tickets can contact Gary ‘Boatsy’ Clarke on 07907 064189.

On the pitch Carlton Town aim to follow up their excellent second round win in the Notts Senior Cup as they they visit Ashington on Saturday 11 followed by a home tie Brighouse on Saturday November 18.

It’s time to apply for your child’s primary school place for September 2024

Applications for school places are now open for parents in Nottinghamshire with children who are starting reception or due to transfer from infant (year 2) to junior education (year 3) in September 2024.

For children in Gedling borough and throughout Nottinghamshire who will turn five years old between September 1, 2024 and August 31, 2025, or are transferring from infant to junior or primary school, parents have until Monday, January 15, 2024 to complete their application on time.

Nottinghamshire County Council is strongly advising parents to do their research on their preferred schools, use all four preferences, and check the admissions criteria thoroughly for the schools they would prefer their child to attend.

Applying online means that Gedling borough parents can access their school offer on national offer day, before offer letters are mailed out and the easiest way to apply for a place is online at www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/admissions

For the best chance of being offered a place at a preferred school, the council advises parents to include schools where their child would have higher priority in the admission criteria and to list four schools.

Nottinghamshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Families, Councillor Tracey Taylor, said: “It is important for parents to remember that children do not automatically transfer from nursery to full-time school and that they will need to submit an application to join reception year.

“The good news is that last year, over 99% of families in Nottinghamshire who applied on-time were offered one of their preferred infant, junior or primary schools.

“I would encourage parents to research their preferred schools, to list four schools and to apply on time to be given the best chance of being offered a place at a school that they would be happy for their child to attend”.

There is no guarantee that a child who attends a school’s nursery will get a place in reception at that same school and parents must make a formal application for a place.

Likewise, if a child is in year 2 at an infant school, there is no automatic transfer to year 3 at junior or primary.

Parents of children living in Nottinghamshire should apply through Nottinghamshire County Council, even if they wish to apply for schools in other local authority areas such as Nottingham City or Derbyshire.

Those who apply online will be able to log in to their account on National Offer Day on Tuesday, 16 April 2024 to view the outcome of their application. If parents provide an email address, the outcome will be sent by email. All other applications will be mailed by second class post on National Offer Day.

Applications received after the closing date are considered as late applications and will be processed once all on-time applications have been offered.

Petrol prices remain high across the country, as households across Gedling borough continue to be squeezed by the cost of living crisis.

Gedling Eye has compiled a list of the cheapest petrol pumps in Gedling borough. The data is sourced from PetrolPrices.com, which covers major service stations including brands like BP, Shell, and Texaco as well as supermarkets, smaller chains and independent stations.

The website combines price data from Catalist with its own crowdsource data, which comes from website users and forecourt owners. The site says it hopes to have “the most up to date and reliable price data across the industry”.

The UK’s average fuel price is 1.57p per litre for Unleaded and 1.63p per litre for diesel as of September.

Police crackdown on antisocial car cruising in Gedling borough ‘making progress’

Police say an operation designed to tackle antisocial car cruising in Gedling borough hotspot areas is continuing to make progress.

Operation Triplefin was launched by police back in October 2022 and they say it’s designed to prevent and reduce criminal activity associated with car cruisers congregating in hotspot locations, including in Colwick and Netherfield.

A three-year public spaces protection order (PSPO) was also been put in place back in June which prohibits car cruisers from congregating in such areas, and gives police powers to issue fines.

The order was secured as a result of collective work involving local police and Gedling Borough Council.

Police units say they will continue to carry out proactive patrols and Operation Triplefin n affected areas to give added protection to affected residents and businesses. 

Sergeant James Carrington, who has led on Operation Triplefin, said: “Our ongoing activity has already had a real impact on deterring and reducing antisocial car cruising in these areas.

“I hope it reassures our communities that we have listened, and we are continuing to take this seriously. Our proactive patrols are ongoing and we are continuing to work with our partners to tackle this issue.

“Operation Triplefin has already made a big difference and we will continue to take robust action against offenders who cause safety concerns and misery for local people.”

Police were made aware of cars which had congregated in Colwick on the night of October 29. Response officers attended and vehicles involved were dispersed.

Car cruisers have previously been warned they could be prosecuted if they attend gatherings after the installation of a new CCTV camera.

The high-tech camera, capable to 360-degree viewing, has been put up at the entrance to the retail park site, near the new Sainsburys, off Colwick Loop Road, following funding from the Safer Streets project.

The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Nottinghamshire secured £3 million from the Home Office’s Safer Streets fund and has been working with partners across the county to implement a range of schemes to tackle neighbourhood crime, antisocial behaviour and violence against women and girls.

A share of this money was specifically allocated for the Netherfield and Colwick area, with Nottinghamshire Police and Gedling Borough Council working alongside the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner to implement schemes which aim to make public spaces safer for all.

Four automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras have been placed along the loop road as an added measure to prevent and reduce antisocial behaviour.

Officers say they are now using both marked and unmarked cars and body-worn video cameras to clamp down on individuals causing problems.

Match Report: Gedling Miners Welfare FC 1 – 4 Nottingham Forest U21

Gedling and Forest U21’s are no strangers to each other after the sides met last year at the quarter final stage with the Premier League academy side running out 7-0 winners.

This year Gedling are having a much better time in the league sitting just
outside the play-offs but knew the standard of opposition they were facing which included Harry Arter who has racked up over 70 premier league appearances.

In front of a strong crowd of 440 the game stared quite evenly but on the 5th minute the visitors took the lead. Steven Brett attempted back pass was weak and allowed the Forest forward to go 1v1 with Josh Mitchell and the ball found the bottom right hand corner.

Gedling reacted strongly and grew more and more into the game and on the 25th minute they were rewarded with a goal of real class. Gian Ciaurro, who scored his first goal for the club on Saturday found space in the Forest half and he hit a great right footed strike from 25 yards that found the bottom left corner leaving the visitors keeper no chance for his second in as many games and to make the score 1-1.

The game continued on the same pattern with neither keeper really being tested until the 40th minute where Mitchell was called into action after a ball down the right saw Joe Gardner get in but Gedling’s keeper did well to tip his effort onto the post and the teams went into half time level.

The visitors came out the second half bright and on 54 minutes they retook the lead after a good cutback was smashed in off the crossbar leaving Mitchell no chance.

Gedling continued to stay in the game and again restricted the visitors for most of the half but on 70 minutes Forest had a two goal advantage, Mitchell saved a 1v1 but the ball cannoned off Adrain Hawes and it trickled over the line and on 75 minutes the game was put to bed as a ball round the corner was slotted just past Mitchell despite him getting a hand to it.

But on the 86th minute Gedling were awarded a penalty after Buba Ceesay drove past three players before being bundled over in the area. However, Muta Eisa saw his effort from the spot saved to keep the score at 4-1.

This was how the game finished as Gedling exit the cup but the lads can take many positives from the performance in what all in all was a brilliant day for the club and we are back at Plains Road this Saturday as local rivals Radford are the visitors.
