Police scam call blocking device helping protect vulnerable adults in borough

Residents in Gedling borough who are at high risk of becoming victims of telephone scams can now have free call blockers installed in their homes.

The small devices block unwanted phone calls made to people who are most at risk of scams in the borough.

The units are being funded by Nottinghamshire Police and Trading Standards and prevent scam and nuisance calls and provide intelligence to support investigations against the scammers.

So far, 39 residents in Nottinghamshire have had a call blocker unit installed in their homes. The units have already blocked 7,465 scam and nuisance calls since the first unit was installed in 2022.

One resident said they used to receive nuisance calls on a frequent basis and that having the unit installed has changed their life greatly, as they were no longer obsessed with looking at their bank statements to check they haven’t been scammed.

Another resident said they used to receive nuisance calls on a weekly basis – causing her worry and anxiety. Since having the unit installed, the resident is no longer receiving any nuisance calls and said they have “peace of mind” now the calls have stopped.

Detective Sergeant Sally Collins, of Nottinghamshire Police’s fraud unit, said: “Scam and nuisance calls can lead to significant financial loss, so we are pleased to be able to protect those who are particularly vulnerable by installing these units.

“The feedback we’ve received from residents has been amazing. The units have had a significant impact on their wellbeing and quality of life, as they are no longer being hounded by scam and nuisance calls.

“We have a limited number of units still available and will continue to work to protect the most vulnerable residents in Nottinghamshire.”

Over the operational life of the units, it is projected that they will have blocked almost 50,000 nuisance calls and saved these residents more than £200,000.

The call blocker units supplied are the trueCall Secure devices, which filter unwanted scam and nuisance calls and stop them from getting through to the consumer’s landline.

The devices allow calls from a “trusted caller list” set by the user for friends, family members, doctors and any other trusted contacts.

Nottinghamshire Police has a limited number of units available for residents who are most vulnerable to scams.

To register an interest in receiving a unit or to make a referral, email nottsprotect@notts.police.uk or call 101 and enter the extension number 3115123.

New outdoor facilities are hit with youngsters at Haddon Primary & Nursery School in Carlton

Children at Haddon Primary & Nursery School in Carlton are making the most of new facilities in the school’s dedicated early years outdoor learning space.

A new central pagoda in the outdoor learning space has added to the existing covered areas so children can access the outdoors more often throughout the year.

Headteacher Nina Capek said: “Having developed the indoor learning environment last year, we felt that our youngest children deserved a better outdoor area to support their learning.

The outdoor space at Haddon Primary and Nursery School in Carlton

“We worked closely with the Flying High Partnership to design a modern, fit for purpose, flexible and custom designed outdoor space with high quality resources where children can learn and play.

“We were very grateful to the Partnership for financially supporting this crucial project and enabling our children to have the facilities they deserve.”

Rosie Middleton is the Early Years Foundation Stage Lead and FS2 teacher at the school. She revealed that some of the items in the playground have been hand made by her father, Brian Chadwick, a retired carpenter.

She said: “Whenever we have needed something extra for the outdoor space I have asked for help from my dad! He made a bookshelf, table and chairs and also lots of smaller resources like a toadstool counting game, giant wooden scales and chalkboards for our writing shed.

“The children love the items, and they are a great addition to keep children engaged and learning during their time out of doors.”

Aldi vows to ‘never be beaten on price’ in latest promise to customers

Aldi has said it is ramping up its price promise and pledged to outdo the amount invested on price cuts last year, despite already investing over £125m this year so far.

The discounter, which has stores in Daybrook, Mapperley and Netherfield, has already reduced the price of 500 grocery products, representing a quarter of its range and a third of its fruit and veg.

Yet in a bid to ‘never be beaten on price’, Aldi has now committed to beating the £380m invested in price cuts during 2023.

Aldi’s latest commitment comes as it revealed last week it will open 35 new stores across the UK as consumer demand for value prices increases

Aldi UK and Ireland chief executive officer Giles Hurley said: “We know that shoppers remain under pressure from the cost of living, which is why we remain laser focused on offering the lowest possible prices.

“We are investing more than ever before in lowering prices, and we will continue to do whatever it takes to keep grocery prices as low as possible for the millions of customers that shop with us.”

Aldi’s latest commitment comes as it revealed last week it will open 35 new stores across the UK as consumer demand for value prices increases.

The new locations are also due to create an additional 5,500 new jobs during 2024, which will benefit from Aldi’s highest entry level wage for storefront workers, after it raised pay last month as part of its wider pledge to ‘never be beaten on pay’.

Pair jailed after being caught hiding on roof of cannabis factory warehouse in Daybrook

Two men have been jailed after they were found hiding on the roof of a warehouse in Daybrook which had been turned into a cannabis factory.

Officers had to force their way through three doors when they arrived at the premises in Edwin Street, Daybrook, at 12.20pm on February 27, 2024 to carry out a search.

A total of around 600 cannabis plants were discovered being cultivated across four rooms within the warehouse.

Officers spotted Ervis Llani, aged 20, and 27-year-old Xhuljan Stafaj on the roof.

The pair jumped from the building and ran down Edwin Street but were detained by police.

As well as the plants, lights and fans, the building contained a small living area.

Llani, of no fixed abode, and Stafaj, of Edwin Street, were each jailed for 14 months when they appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Thursday (March 28).

Both had previously pleaded guilty to producing a Class B drug.

Detective Sergeant Toni Smithurst, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We were alerted to this grow when people spotted the electricity supply was being bypassed to this building.

“This was putting neighbouring homes at risk, so I am grateful for their information which has allowed us to put this extensive cannabis factory out of action.

“Cannabis production on this scale is invariably linked to wider, organised criminality and can also create issues and dangers for people living in our communities.

“Unsuspecting neighbouring families are often put at risk by rival criminal gangs if they target the crop to steal the plants.

“Vulnerable people are also often exploited and forced by organised crime groups to stay at the properties – often in dangerous and unsanitary conditions – to tend to the plants.

“I would urge anyone who believes cannabis is being produced in their neighbourhood to get in touch. Your information could be a vital missing piece of the jigsaw which allows us to take positive action.”

Tips for novice travelers

Very often, when planning a trip, we need to remember important things that can be useful during the trip. These tips will help you prepare well and make your vacation unforgettable!

Route planning

To plan your vacation, use a special application or notes on your smartphone. Some people create multiple folders on their phones. One indicates the flight numbers, the other the departure time, the third the hotel addresses, and the fourth the expenses.

What to take with you

Make a short list of what things you will need on vacation, considering the time of year. If your luggage is too big, think about what you can do without it and leave it at home. In addition to clothes, be sure to take with you:

  • money and documents;
  • first aid kit;
  • phone and charger;
  • inexpensive mp3 player;
  • water for the journey;
  • hygiene products, including wet wipes.

Personal safety

To make your trip go well, follow the basic rules:

  • read in advance about the peculiarities of the country you are traveling to;
  • if your vacation is in an exotic place, get the necessary vaccinations;
  • drink only bottled and sealed water;
  • do not eat where there is no running water or toilet.

Proper nutrition

To travel and stay healthy, you need to watch your diet. Typically, people consume more heavy food and alcohol on vacation than at home. Of course, you can sometimes allow yourself to relax, but you also need to remember about your health. Include fruits and vegetables in your diet, as well as foods rich in protein. This can help you feel good throughout your vacation.

Interaction with local residents

By interacting with the locals, you can have a unique and exciting experience that will add new colors to your trip. When going on a trip to any country, you should carefully study the traditions and behavioral characteristics that are accepted there. You can learn a few basic phrases in the local language to make your trip more comfortable. Also, don’t forget about non-verbal communication. Remember that the meaning of gestures may vary in different parts of the world. Make sure you use the right signs to get your point across. If you learn about the country’s peculiarities in advance, you can avoid awkward situations and also show your respect for people.

And, of course, don’t forget about health insurance, which will help you get quality medical care if necessary. We wish you pleasant and safe travels!

Your region, your mayor, your vote: People will decide who leads a £4 billion boost for the East Midlands

A £4 billion investment in the future of the East Midlands will be guided by a public vote.

Nottinghamshire, Nottingham, Derbyshire and Derby, have opened the door to a massive investment in transport, skills, housing and the environment after securing a deal to set up a combined county authority covering the region.

But what the Combined Authority does will be led by a mayor – and Gedling borough residents and the public from across Nottinghamshire, Nottingham, Derbyshire and Derby get to decide who that mayor is.

The first ever election for a Mayor of the East Midlands will take place on Thursday 2 May, and a campaign has just been launched to encourage people to head to the polls on voting day.

The £4 billion investment has been made possible after government agreed to give up some of its powers and transfer them to the mayor and combined authority through a landmark devolution deal agreed in 2022.

The move means that the East Midlands will be on an equal footing with areas like the West Midlands, Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire, where elected mayors have secured similar large-scale investment pots.

An elected mayor will give the East Midlands a voice at the national table able to make the case for much greater investment from both government and private sector.

The East Midlands deal is one of the biggest so far, and the team setting up the combined county authority say the mayor will have the powers and resources to begin a long-term process of growing the region’s economy by investing in skills that lead to better jobs, transport that works better across the region, housing where it’s needed and an economy equipped to deal with net zero.

Mark Rogers, interim Chief Executive of the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) said: “This is a big deal in every sense. It’s on a scale that the East Midlands hasn’t seen before, and gives it the powers and resources it needs to turn round under-investment, tackle challenges and open up massive new opportunities for people and places.

“This is all about bringing power back to the East Midlands, and the most significant part of that process is the vote – the people will decide who’ll lead this transformation.”

The campaign to encourage voting is based on the shift of powers from Westminster to the East Midlands. With a slogan ‘here, not there’ it promotes the powers the mayor will have to take big decisions about the future of the East Midlands here in the region rather than in London.

The combined county authority is being formed by Derbyshire County Council, Derby City Council, Nottinghamshire County Council and Nottingham City Council and was developed in partnership with district and borough councils across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. Leaders and deputy leaders from each authority will sit on the combined county authority, but they’ll also be advised by specialists from different parts of the community.

This includes a business advisory board that will be developed by the interim representative for business, David Williams, who chairs the law firm Geldards, which has a major office presence in both Derby and Nottingham.

He said: “This is going to make a huge difference to the East Midlands and there’s a clear emphasis on investing in projects and places that are going to support a long-term improvement to people’s lives.

“This is why it’s so important that everyone out there has their say. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to invest billions of pounds in people’s futures – so our people need to decide who they want to make the key decisions.”

The mayor will lead a combined county authority that is being given powers currently held by Westminster to invest over the long-term in priorities like transport, skills, housing and regeneration and net zero. It won’t duplicate what local councils do.

The object is to invest in ways that suit the East Midlands, making it easier to travel across different East Midlands transport networks, matching skills to what the region’s businesses do, enabling house building and land regeneration where it’s needed and exploiting the region’s strengths in net zero technologies to create a robust, renewable energy system.

The EMCCA is being funded by government and will not take money away from existing councils.

Eggcellent work in Lambley as chocolate Easter egg wall demolished for charity

As Easter approached The Robin Hood Inn in Lambley started an Easter egg collection to support children’s cancer charities.

Gedling Eye caught up with Jo Leafe, manager of the popular local pub who said: “We have a regular, Pete who mentioned that he had done an Easter egg collection in the Robin Hood Inn a few years ago. Pete’s nephew, Ryan died from a cancerous brain tumour that progressed down his spine so we chose to support children’s cancer charities as this is a cause close to Pete’s heart.

“People have been amazed by the scale of the wall. We have even had strangers in that left us money so we could go out and buy eggs to add to the wall. Paul and I would like to thank everyone that donated and we couldn’t have done it without them.

“In total we managed to get a massive 344 eggs and we even had an anonymous donation of over 50 eggs.

“When the chocolate Easter egg wall was taken down we donated the eggs to the teenage cancer ward at City Hospital, Maggies at the City Hospital, Haywood House, the childrens ward at the QMC, Arnold Foodbank, The Salvation Army and Spring Lane Care Home.”

The Robin Hood Inn is located at 82 Main Street, Lambley, NG4 4PP and can be contacted by telephone on 0115 931 3906 or by email at robinhood.lambley@phoenixpub.co.uk.
