Gedling borough residents warned over eBay scam email that locks computers

eBay users in Gedling borough are being warned not to open a new scam email scam that will lock your computer’s files and then demand you hand over money to get back access.

The email, which is designed to look similar to an eBay receipt email, tells users that they’ve spent a hefty amount of money on the auction site and that they should pay the invoice via a download link.

However, when you click on the link, rather than an invoice downloading to your computer, it will be a product called ‘Locky Ransomware’

This downloaded virus will then scramble and rename all of your files before prompting you to spend money on a decryption key to fix the problem.

Scambusting group Action Fraud has now issued the warning on Twitter after receiving more than 50 reports about the scam.
