Former Arnold care home to become supported housing for vulnerable young people

A derelict former care home in Arnold is being given a new lease of life as part of a £6 million scheme to provide supported housing for young people.

Work has now started at the former Leivers Court site on Douro Drive after the ageing building was demolished. Housing provider Nottingham Community Housing Association (NCHA) has taken over the site and plans to turn it into a mix of supported accommodation and affordable homes.

The redevelopment will create 22 one-bedroom supported living apartments for young people who need help building the confidence and skills to live independently. A further eight affordable homes will be made available through Gedling Borough Council’s housing register.

The scheme, designed by Pelham Architects and being built by Gelder Ltd, will include 24 one-bedroom flats and eight family homes, all available at affordable rent.

NCHA says the development has been designed to fit seamlessly into the surrounding neighbourhood while delivering modern, energy-efficient homes. The apartments are expected to achieve EPC B standards, while the houses are targeting the highest EPC A rating.

Fran Cropper, Assistant Director of Development and Sales at NCHA, said the project would create “a welcoming, empowering environment” for young residents.

The development has secured almost £1.94 million from the East Midlands Combined County Authority’s Brownfield Housing Fund, helping bring the previously unused site back into use. The funding forms part of a wider programme set to deliver 159 affordable homes across the region.

Gedling Borough Council has welcomed the plans.

Councillor Lynda Pearson, Deputy Leader of the Council, said: “Having a safe and secure home can make a world of difference to a young person’s life. It’s great to see this site being brought back into use and turned into somewhere that will give young people the support and stability they need.”

Construction is expected to continue until autumn 2027, when the first residents could move into the new homes.
