Three times a year the aroma of a full English breakfast being cooked fills the air at Phoenix Farm Methodist Church, Wollaton Avenue, Gedling.
The ‘Big Breakfast’ event is now entering its 15th year and amazingly the event that charged £4 when it started has never changed the cost – it is still £4 for a ‘Big Breakfast’ today.
For £4, attendees get Cereal or porridge, a full English with 2 sausages, 2 bacon, egg, hash brown, fried bread, tomatoes, beans, toast and tea or coffee.
The event runs three times a year with the next one on June 8 from 10:00am – 1.00pm.
Gedling Eye caught up with Terry Allwood, one of the dedicated team of volunteers who run the event who said: “It was so nice to see some new faces at the last big breakfast, it was one of our busiest. Also to thank everyone for their continued support which enables the church to give back to the community and we’re looking forward to seeing you all there this time around.
“It all started 14 years ago, our mums attended the church at that time and the church had started to struggle to keep things going. This is when the Big Breakfast started.
“My friend, Adrian Ingham, my wife, Gyorgyi Allwood & myself started to do the Big Breakfast to generate funds for the church. We had a brilliant time growing up in the Boys Brigade so wanted to put something back and help.
“The money that we generate now still helps the church to function, but also helps the church to put on other events that help the local community, like food parcels, coffee mornings etc.
“On a normal Saturday we can serve up to 100 breakfasts and in 2019 we started to do a Christmas dinner in December as well, that continues today.
“There’s a team of guys from the church that give up their time to do the cooking, waitering, washing up and one of the most important parts of the day – having a chat with everyone”
The next ‘Big Breakfast’ event will be held on June 8 from 10:00am – 1.00pm.
