MATCH REPORT: Teversal Reserves 2 – 1 Linby CWFC

Linby made a losing return to the league after being beaten 2-1 by Teversal Reserves in their first competitive game for over 21 days, writes Kieran Booker

A freak first half goal which was claimed by Teversal’s Danny Fletcher was the only highlight of a drab, drizzly first half. Jonathan Jenkinson managed to tap in a leveller for Linby after the hour mark but Kurtis Bamford made sure all three points stayed in Teversal with an 80th minute long range strike.

Danny Fletcher forced Jamie Davies into a close range save after only four minutes after running onto a long range ball from the left side. That chance was the only real effort in the early stages as both sides struggled to settle in possession.

The deadlock was broken after 25 minutes though when the home side scored with a rare chance. The ball was pumped into the ball from a deep position on the left side, the ball bounced in the box and ended up dropping in over Davies’ head. During the celebrations, Teversal’s Danny Fletcher claimed a touch on the ball on its travel towards goal.

Captain Aidy Harris tried to get Linby a quick equaliser when he lined up a close range free kick two minutes later. The attacker saw his strike take a deflection from the wall before being easily scooped up by Myles Wright.

The home side nearly doubled their lead in the last minute of the half. A corner wasn’t cleared by the defence as it continued  to ping around their box, a awkward bounce nearly caught out Davies but the keeper eventually dived on the ball to smother the danger.

Kye Pilmore was able to peel away from his marker early in the second half as a more composed Linby went in search of an equaliser. The forward used his pace to break away but the Teversal keeper was able to steal the ball from his feet before he could get a shot away.

Pilmore was involved in Linby’s equaliser which came in the 60th minute. Tyler Guy was able to launch a free kick into the box from near half way, Pilmore got a touch which forced a tip from an outrushing Wright but defender Jonathan Jenkinson reacted quickest to tap the ball into the empty net.

The away side looked to push on after grabbing the equaliser but Aidy Harris could only see his shot deflect into the side netting before his side wasted the follow up corner. Their next chance fell to substitute Jamie Tryner but he could only fire over from outside the box.

Danny Fletcher looked to get himself a second after 79 minutes. He was able to drive down the right side but his eventual shot flew diagonally across goal and straight out the back.

A minute later his side did re-take the lead though as Kurtis Bamford grabbed a winner. Kurtis Bamford received the ball, 25 yards out on the right side of the pitch, he was able to take a touch before releasing a striker which flew in straight over Jamie Davies’ head.

After going behind for a second time, Linby threw everyone forward in search of an equaliser. Lewis Weaver was able to break through 1v1 from the half way line but was denied by a great close range stop by Wright.

In injury time, Linby thought they had got a last gasp leveller. Tyler Guy saw his free kick from the right side glide straight into the opposite corner but his sides’ celebrations were soon halted as the linesman flagged for offside as Will Spray had attempted to connect with the ball on its way through.

After the game, Linby manager Lewis Saxby said “Im disappointed with the performance today. We’ve created some chances but we’ve given away possession too cheaply and too often today.”

MATCH REPORT: Carlton Town 0 – 1 Leek Town

This game was already set to be scrappy before the kick off with a battered pitch following heavy rain.

Leek looked the better side for 90 minutes and dominated early play. They were awarded a controversial penalty after Kevin Lusamba was deemed to have brought down a player in the box. Many around the ground thought he had won the ball but Darren Chadwick grabbed the only goal of the game with a composed strike into the bottom right.

From then on the game was very uneventful bar Sam Grimshaw and William Mellors-Blair hitting the woodwork for each side. Carlton must now hope Daniel Fletcher will recover in time for their next fixture having come off after a clash of heads and Niall Davie filling in at left back for much of the game.

A popular food and drink venue in Sherwood is to start offering Sunday lunches following unprecedented demand’ from customers.

Artisan bakery, café and micropub The Bakehouse, on Mansfield Road in Sherwood will start opening on Sundays from March 5 in response to requests from regular customers.

Sunday lunches will see the Bakehouse offer two different meat options plus a vegetarian dish each week, with one, two or three courses available. The pre-booked lunch service will run from 12pm to 4pm.

Tony Cave Column: Carlton Station a victim of its own success

The latest news from our local railways by Carlton and Netherfield stations adopter Tony Cave.

We’ve now set up a ‘Friends of Carlton & Netherfield Stations’ Facebook group which you can ask to join and this will enable people to post experiences of local train travel. You can join the group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/262267110870693/

Carlton Station – a victim of its own success

It’s impossible for guards to collect all the fares when there are more than about six people requiring tickets between Carlton and Nottingham, so it means obtaining a ticket at Nottingham or the next train if going further. One person told me that when she goes to Leicester she gets the bus to Nottingham so she can obtain a ticket. Another person emailed me to say, “My wife works in Nottingham directly opposite the station and commutes using the bus. She would prefer the train, but the difficulty of getting a ticket prevents her from doing so.”

Season tickets aren’t suitable for everyone if you commute three or four days a week. The email continued, “How many other potential customers ae put off by the inability to get tickets because of the short journey time?”

Records continue to be broken on the 8.08am Matlock train. On Wednesday, January 18, 38 got on and 4 got off. On Wednesday, January 25, 41 got on and 3 off. This was partly due to the long delays on the roads caused by roadworks. One day the same week it was reported to me that 29 people joined the 7.11am train to Matlock. Thanks to those that report the passenger numbers.

A four-car Meridian train has been used on some of the Lincoln to Leicester trains, including the 17.21pm out of Nottingham. This has been appreciated by those using the service. Even so, it’s still full!

Matlock to Newark Service

We are more than half-way through the three-year trial of the Newark extension to the Nottingham-Matlock service, and I think it has been successful and should be included in the new franchise which commences in Summer 2018. Major development is planned in the Newark Growth Zone with up to 10,000 new homes and 150 hectares of employment land by 2026. The current phase for 3,150 homes should have commenced now, generating more road and rail traffic and not forgetting plans for large housing developments in Gedling and Netherfield.

A wish-list for Lincolnshire County Council is to have two trains an hour between Lincoln and Nottingham. This is currently being constrained by having to cross the East Coast line.

The Saturday Nottingham to Newark service is not included in the three-year trial and has been included due to demand. Between 8.00am and 12.00pm on Saturday, November 7 2015, 19 passengers used the five trains at Carlton. On Saturday, November 19, 54 passengers used the 10 trains. If possible, avoid the 11.24 train to Leicester on Saturdays, it is more often-than-not full and standing and passengers have been turned away. I never thought I’d say this, but passengers turned away sometimes do not come back. Trains starting at Newark always have room, so the 11.08am train is your best option.

Southwell Racecourse

Apart from racing, more special events than ever are planned this year. Many are on Sundays, but other days when events are planned include a Ladies evening on June 13, a Gate to Southwell Festival event on June 8-11, and a ‘Foodie Fest’ on June 17 and 18. Antique and Vintage Fairs are also being held in April, July and August. The Newark Advertiser recently reported the executive director of the course said: “We are in talks with East Midlands Trains to look at the possibility of running additional services to Rolleston station on some of the race and event days to make it easier for people to get to us”. Ticket Problems

A regular commuter from Bingham to Netherfield sometimes finishes work too late to catch the 17.50pm train back, so he has to go to Carlton for the 18.23 to Nottingham and 18.44 Nottingham to Bingham. He was charged £7.60 off-peak single for this return journey. He queried this with East Midlands Trains and received this reply: “It is of course disappointing that you have been charged £7.60 for an off-peak day single from Carlton to Bingham via Nottingham on the 18.23 departure (connecting with the 18.44 departure to Bingham) as the £4.80 return fare appears to permit travel on board this journey. I have raised this anomaly with our pricing manager.” This email came from getintouch@eastmidlandstrains.co.uk

In Brief

Work is taking place to extend the platforms at Lowdham and Fiskerton stations, which will compensate for the loss of part of the platforms at the level crossing end. This work should be completed in May.

Newark Festival is on Friday, June 16 to Sunday, June 18. Last year a late night train ran from Newark to Nottingham, calling at Carlton on the Saturday. I hope it does so this year.

Trenitalia (Italian) and First Group are combining to bid for the East Midlands Trains franchise.

Ilkeston Station is due to open on Sunday, April 2.

One of the redundant signal boxes between Lowdham and Newark may be relocated to the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway between Duffield and Wirksworth

We’ve had a meeting with East Midlands Trains line manager about the poor condition of Carlton Station car park surface. The result is that one Saturday or Sunday soon, a load of ballast/chippings will be spread over the surface to improve drainage. Notices will be put up beforehand to advise on the closure day.

There will be a Civil War Festival at Newark on April 30 and May 1 and will see a re-enactment of the 17th century battle.

It now seems unlikely that there will be an improved service at Carlton Station on Sundays from this May, as previously hoped. However, the new timetable will be available online at the beginning of March.

Cold caller warning to Gedling borough residents following Storm Doris

0
People in Gedling borough are being warned to be on their guard if approached by doorstep salespeople offering to repair damage caused by Storm Doris to avoid poor workmanship, a scam or another crime.

The warning coincides with reports this week to the Nottinghamshire County Council’s Trading Standards team of an unknown trader cold calling to offering tree surgery services.

The trader seems to be targeting the homes of older people and has been reported to be trespassing into their rear gardens and asking residents if they live alone and what times they are usually not at home.

There were 50 reports on doorstep crime between October and December 2016.

Residents struggling to find a reputable trader are being advised to find a vetted local trader on Checkatrade’s website.

Door-stop

The Council entered into a partnership with Checkatrade in 2015 to help protect local people from rogue tradespeople and trusted members are thoroughly vetted and have to supply references.

Councillor Glynn Gilfoyle, Chair of Nottinghamshire County Council’s Community Safety Committee, said: “Unscrupulous rogue traders take advantage of big weather events to secure work with people whose property has been adversely affected and it can seem like they are a knight in shining armour offering to rectify damage.

“However, they are likely either to carry out a poor job, charge inflated prices or pressure you into having unnecessary work carried out.

“You’re far safer to get a recommendation from a friend or relative or look for a trusted trader on Checkatrade’s website who we have partnered with.”
