Thousands of Nottinghamshire parents and carers have today discovered the outcome of their child’s secondary school applications for places starting in autumn 2024.
The vast majority, more than 98%, of the 9,446 on-time applications for September 2024 admissions in Nottinghamshire will be receiving a place at one of their preferred schools, increasing from last year.
Despite the large volume of applications, more than 91% of children are being offered their parents’ first preference, with just under 6% offered their second preference, meaning nearly 97% have been offered either their first or second preference, also increasing from last year.
This year, 92% of families applied online and will receive their offer by email or by logging into their school admissions account on offer day to get details of their school offer and instructions on what to do next. Other applicants who provided an email address will also be sent an email on offer day. Letters to the remaining applicants will be posted second class on Friday, 1 March and these are expected to arrive in the coming days.
Councillor Sam Smith, Cabinet Member for Education and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, at Nottinghamshire County Council said: “It is fantastic that the vast majority of children are getting a place at one of their preferred schools and that this continues to increase despite the challenges. A lot of work goes into the admissions process and the aim is to offer a preferred school wherever possible.
“To meet local need, many schools across the county have offered additional places, over their published admission numbers and I’d like to thank everyone who has been involved. The council’s admissions team has continued to work incredibly hard to deliver even better results this year.
“We are committed to providing sufficient high quality school places to meet the increasing demand for places as more families choose to live and work here in Nottinghamshire.
“I hope those about to move up to secondary school can now enjoy their last few months at primary and junior school before they begin the next phase of their education journey.”
When parents and carers receive their offer, they have a number of options:
Accept the school place – by March 15.
If their child has been refused a place at a preferred school, they will already be on the school’s waiting list.
If they are not satisfied with the offer they have received, they are advised to contact the school for which they have a preference for information about how to lodge an appeal.
Important: parents are advised to accept their child’s offer, even if they would prefer a different school and plan to appeal, until they have confirmed alternative plans for their child’s education.
The council follows the government’s school admissions code, which ensures that all school places for maintained schools and academies are allocated and offered in an open and fair way.
For anyone who submitted a late application or made changes to their application after the October deadline, those applications will start to be processed from Monday, 18 March and parents informed after March 27.
An application to demolish an existing single storey office and two industrial buildings and erection of 5 multi-purpose industrial units that was refused by Gedling Borough Council Planning has been re-submitted.
The initial application was received on behalf of Radford Holdings Ltd. relating to a site at Park House Mile End Road, Colwick, Nottinghamshire, NG4 2DW was refused in May 2023 for three reasons.
Pictured: Park House signage to the front of Park House (PHOTO: Gedling Eye)
Details contained in a Planning and Access statement provided by EJD in support of the re-submission addresses the three reasons cited in the initial planning application refusal stating that:
The first reason related to the perception that the proposal would be overbearing and would overshadow immediate neighbouring properties. To remove the perception that the proposal would be considered overbearing the scheme has been redesigned to more closely replicate the existing site layout. It now sits further away from neighbouring residential properties when compared to the previous proposal. To address the overshadowing comment, specialists have been commissioned to review the revised layout and prepare an overshadowing report based on the revised layout. This concludes that there would be no adverse impacts, but on the contrary there would be reduced shading within the gardens of two dwellings to the north when compared to the existing site. It was also referenced in the first reason for refusal that the proposal would result in significant noise issues. The noise report has been updated with clear references made to the fact that the proposal has been assessed on the basis that the end users would be B2/B8 users, with no adverse impact predicted on residential properties.
The second reason provided was that the Flood Risk Assessment was not considered to comply with the requirements for site specific Flood Risk Assessments. The Flood Risk Assessment has been updated to address this.
The third and final reason noted that the Land Contamination Assessment did not contain the Phase 1 Geo-Environmental Report. Whilst this was provided during the determination process, it was still noted as a reason for refusal. This resubmission contains the Phase 1 GeoEnvironmental Report
Pictured: The proposed site location (Courtesy of Gedling Borough Council Planning)
The site is bound to the north by residential properties and to the east by industrial units. To the south is Mile End Road, across which is a narrow wooded belt and grassed area beyond which is further residential and industrial development. To the west is residential development accessed from Colwick Manor Farm.
The site is currently used as a mix of office and industrial use buildings.
Pictured: The proposed site location (Courtesy of Gedling Borough Council Planning)
The Planning and Access statement further states that the units are all single storey in height in similarity to the existing unit which they are to replace and that access will continue to be from Mile End Road. The existing eastern access is to be stopped up with a kerb installed over the existing opening and the site is proposed to accommodates 30 parking spaces including two disabled bays.

Two men were arrested as police discovered a large cannabis factory in Daybrook.
Officers attended a derelict warehouse in Edwin Street at 12.20pm on Tuesday (27).
The unit adjourns a row of terraced houses and concerns were raised after cables were spotted bypassing an electric meter – posing a fire risk.
Officers gained entry to the warehouse and found approximately 600 plants spread over four large rooms.
Moments later, an officer spotted two men on the roof. They jumped down and ran but were quickly detained by officers.
The factory was discovered in this abandoned industrial unit on Edwin Street
The plants, with a street value of more than £500,000, have now been removed from the site and an array of sophisticated growing equipment has been put beyond use.
The two men, aged 20 and 27, were arrested on suspicion of the cultivation of cannabis and taken into custody.
PC Michael Callan, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This was a very large and sophisticated cannabis grow that had clearly taken some considerable time and expense to set up. I am pleased that we have disrupted the activities of whoever is operating it, and that we have taken a very significant quantity of drugs off the streets.
“We take the production and supply of illegal drugs extremely seriously and will not tolerate the cultivation of cannabis in our communities.
“In this case, the set up posed a very real fire risk to neighbouring properties, due to electricity being dangerously bypassed.
“We continue to urge the public to report local concerns around drug dealing to us, and to look out for the signs a property is being used to grow drugs.
“You can call 101 or speak anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

A triathlon club which held its first sessions online during the Covid pandemic has been named the best in the East Midlands.
The Nottingham Triathlon Club with a number of Gedling borough members scooped three awards, including East Midlands Club of the Year, in the Triathlon England Awards.
The club, which has gone on to boast more than 100 members including Great Britain age group athletes, will now take part in a national contest to discover the best triathlon club in the country.
Triathlon events incorporate swimming, cycling and running, meaning competitors have to learn a range of skills and develop strong all round fitness levels.
The win is the second time in the last three years that the Nottingham-based club has taken the top prize, after also being named the area’s top triathlon club in 2022. The result effectively means the group has retained its title as the rules of the awards state winners are not allowed to defend their accolades, meaning the club did not compete in the awards last year.

At a ceremony at the club’s swim session at Harvey Hadden in Bilborough, the club also won the region’s Engagement Award, while Susan Wheatcroft won the individual Volunteer of the Year category.
In all, Nottingham Triathlon Club received nominations in multiple categories, with three members being nominated for the Volunteer of the Year award.
The Engagement Award is given to the club or individual which has made a remarkable impact in engaging both active triathletes and the broader swim, bike, run community by fostering a sense of belonging, motivation and community spirit.
Susan’s Volunteer of the Year award recognises her contribution as what Triathlon England calls “the lifeblood of the sport”. The organisation said the award acknowledges volunteers’ commitment, passion and tireless efforts.
The awards, which celebrate those who give their time, energy and passion to making triathlon a supportive and welcoming sport, shine a spotlight on the work done by triathlon clubs up and down the country.
Nottingham Triathlon Club was formed during lockdown in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, with initial sessions being held online in 2020. In all, it now has more than 100 junior and adult members, including representatives of Great Britain age category teams.
Fully-coached sessions take place at multiple locations in Nottingham including Harvey Hadden, Southglade and Bingham. As well as providing training for triathletes, the club caters for those who want to stay fit or improve their running, swimming and cycling individually.
Chair of Nottingham Triathlon Club, Mike McCabe, said: “To have been nominated in so many categories is an honour, but to have won three awards is just testament to our members and the passion for the club and sport.
“We strive to be engaging, inclusive and enthusiastic for swim, bike, run so to be recognised for these traits is certainly something to be proud of.”
Sarah Williams, East Midlands regional development manager for British Triathlon, who presented the awards last night, added: “Recognising the region’s triathlon community is a highlight of the year.
“It is great to be able to hear about all of the work that goes on behind the scenes to grow and sustain the sport of triathlon.”
Nottingham Triathlon Club is a British Triathlon affiliated club catering for all ages and abilities. Awarded the British Triathlon Bronze TriMark award in 2019 and East Midlands Triathlon Club of the Year in 2022.
The club offers over 118 training places in the swim, static bike and run at 4 venues across Nottingham.
