Removal of 2 sycamore trees To remove two sycamore trees as highlighted in pink on the sketch plan. The sycamores are part of a self-seeded group of sycamore trees. The sycamore shown on the boundary is leaning over the GBC/City boundary and is believed to have been subject to litigation in the past (pre 2009). The proposal is to remove to ground level and be replaced by a suitable native tree fron the NCC heritage plan for the area. The second sycamore is of little visual amenity and blocks light to the other smaller trees, the adjacent wild flower area and pollutes the natural pond with leaves. The proposal is to remove the tree to ground level.

A cold start for Gedling borough residents today, with perhaps a few rural frost patches. Then fine with a good deal of sunshine before cloud cover increases into the afternoon. Largely dry, although rain may arrive late afternoon. Maximum temperature 12 °C.

Cloud will continue to thicken from the west with outbreaks of rain sweeping east through the evening and overnight. Rain may turn persistent and locally heavy towards dawn. Breezy. Minimum temperature 9 °C.

Tomorrow will see rain, heavy at times, gradually clearing to the east. Brighter Sunday afternoon with some sunny spells and the odd shower. Feeling rather warm in any sunny spells. Light winds. Maximum temperature 15 °C.

LOOKING BACK: Councillors feared creating elderly ‘ghetto’ with new block of flats in Carlton

Councillors voiced their fears of creating ‘a ghetto’ in Carlton if too many elderly people were given flatlets in a multi-storey block which was to be have erected in the district.

The claim was made by two councillors at a meeting of the urban authority’s Housing Committee during discussions on the proposed flats at Walton Crescent, recorded by the Nottingham Guardian Journal in an edition dated April 12, 1969.

A letter was read from Notts County Council approving Carlton Urban Council’s plans to include a group dwelling scheme for the elderly within the block using 19 flats out of the 74 available.

Answering suggestions that the number of flats for the elderly should be increased, Coun. A. Palmer said: “It would be a mistake to group too many together. We could be starting a ghetto of the future.”

He was backed by Coun. J. Rolfe.

However, Coun, Alfred Wheldon deplored the use of the word” ghetto.”

He said :”Do not compare Carlton with Warsaw or New York.”

Coun. T. N. Leighton was also critical of this suggestion.

“We are nowhere near to a ghetto,” he said.

“The old people want to be grouped together because they like their own company rather than being among the young.”

When the issue was put to the vote, it was decided to agree to the initial figure of 19, but to ask the County Council to consider an increase to the number of flats available to the elderly.  

Gedling borough’s latest petrol and diesel prices – and where’s the cheapest to fill up

Petrol prices remain high across the country, as households across Gedling borough continue to be squeezed by the cost of living crisis.

Gedling Eye has compiled a list of the cheapest petrol pumps in Gedling borough. The data is sourced from PetrolPrices.com, which covers major service stations including brands like BP, Shell, and Texaco as well as supermarkets, smaller chains and independent stations.

The website combines price data from Catalist with its own crowdsource data, which comes from website users and forecourt owners. The site says it hopes to have “the most up to date and reliable price data across the industry”.

The UK’s average fuel price is 144.01p per litre for Unleaded and 152.57p per litre for diesel as of February.

Gedling MP asks Government for help in improving flood defences for borough villages

A Gedling MP has called on the Government for help in improving flood defences in villages heavily impacted by recent storms.

During yesterday’s Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Questions in the House of Commons, Gedling MP Tom Randall asked the Flooding Minister for reassurance that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs will continue to work with him to improve flood defences in Colwick and across Gedling.

Gedling’s Conservative Member of Parliament, Tom Randall said “I thank the Minister for Water for coming to Vale Road in Colwick recently to meet residents affected by flooding. It was very much appreciated.”

Tom went on to ask the Minister: “Can [the Minister] reassure me that he and his Department will continue to work with me to improve flood defences both in Colwick and across Nottinghamshire, so that the residents there can sleep a little better at night?”

In response to Tom Randall MP, the Flooding Minister said: “I was glad to visit Colwick and the residents along Vale Road to hear about the impact of recent flooding, not only on them but from the wider residents within that area.

“I will continue to work with [Tom Randall MP] but also Nottinghamshire County Council because I know this is not the only area he is interested in. [Tom Randall MP] has also been working with [Mark Spencer MP], focusing on Lambley and Woodborough as well.

“This work will build on the £51m that has already been allocated to Nottinghamshire County Council, that is already better protecting 15,000 properties.”

Speaking after today’s DEFRA Questions, Tom said: “Recent flooding has caused devastation to families and properties in Colwick, Lambley, Woodborough and Burton Joyce and the Government have, quite rightly, provided grant funding to help mitigate future flooding of properties.

“I have written to properties impacted by flooding to inform them of this grant funding, and I have taken part in multi-agency flood information events across Gedling Borough. It is also reassuring to hear from the Minister today that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs will continue to work with me and Nottinghamshire County Council to improve flood defences both in Colwick and across Gedling.”

Plans to construct 4 X maisonette / apartments in Mapperley are to be considered by Gedling Borough Council planners following an application submitted by YARN Architecture acting as agent on behalf of Mr. Norman Collins of Mapperley.

The planning application proposes to demolish an existing clinic at 1A Whittingham Road, Mapperley, NG3 6BL describing the works as ‘Demolition of existing clinic and proposed construction of 4no maisonette / apartments with associated parking and waste storage’.

PLANNING: Five new build properties proposed for rear of Scotgrave Farmhouse in Gedling

Plans to construct five dwellings to the rear of Scotgrave Farmhouse, Arnold Lane, Gedling, NG4 4HF are to be considered by Gedling Borough Council planners following an application submitted by MNCN Architecture Limited acting as agent on behalf of Darley Developments Limited of London.

Scotgrave Farmhouse is currently advertised for sale by Lester & Bingley Property Consultants of Mansfield.

The proposed development includes the demolition of existing out-buildings and the construction of four semi-detached two storey residential dwellings with associated out-buildings (garages) as well as hard and soft landscaping areas and one detached bungalow.


The proposal includes tarmacadam vehicle access with block paved driveways with the proposed number of on-site parking spaces including existing totalling 12.


A prior planning application in 2019 to erect four detached properties (application no. 2019/0852) was granted conditional permission on January 16, 2020 however the development was not proceed with.
