Pair jailed after being caught hiding on roof of cannabis factory warehouse in Daybrook

Two men have been jailed after they were found hiding on the roof of a warehouse in Daybrook which had been turned into a cannabis factory.

Officers had to force their way through three doors when they arrived at the premises in Edwin Street, Daybrook, at 12.20pm on February 27, 2024 to carry out a search.

A total of around 600 cannabis plants were discovered being cultivated across four rooms within the warehouse.

Officers spotted Ervis Llani, aged 20, and 27-year-old Xhuljan Stafaj on the roof.

The pair jumped from the building and ran down Edwin Street but were detained by police.

As well as the plants, lights and fans, the building contained a small living area.

Llani, of no fixed abode, and Stafaj, of Edwin Street, were each jailed for 14 months when they appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Thursday (March 28).

Both had previously pleaded guilty to producing a Class B drug.

Detective Sergeant Toni Smithurst, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We were alerted to this grow when people spotted the electricity supply was being bypassed to this building.

“This was putting neighbouring homes at risk, so I am grateful for their information which has allowed us to put this extensive cannabis factory out of action.

“Cannabis production on this scale is invariably linked to wider, organised criminality and can also create issues and dangers for people living in our communities.

“Unsuspecting neighbouring families are often put at risk by rival criminal gangs if they target the crop to steal the plants.

“Vulnerable people are also often exploited and forced by organised crime groups to stay at the properties – often in dangerous and unsanitary conditions – to tend to the plants.

“I would urge anyone who believes cannabis is being produced in their neighbourhood to get in touch. Your information could be a vital missing piece of the jigsaw which allows us to take positive action.”

Tips for novice travelers

Very often, when planning a trip, we need to remember important things that can be useful during the trip. These tips will help you prepare well and make your vacation unforgettable!

Route planning

To plan your vacation, use a special application or notes on your smartphone. Some people create multiple folders on their phones. One indicates the flight numbers, the other the departure time, the third the hotel addresses, and the fourth the expenses.

What to take with you

Make a short list of what things you will need on vacation, considering the time of year. If your luggage is too big, think about what you can do without it and leave it at home. In addition to clothes, be sure to take with you:

  • money and documents;
  • first aid kit;
  • phone and charger;
  • inexpensive mp3 player;
  • water for the journey;
  • hygiene products, including wet wipes.

Personal safety

To make your trip go well, follow the basic rules:

  • read in advance about the peculiarities of the country you are traveling to;
  • if your vacation is in an exotic place, get the necessary vaccinations;
  • drink only bottled and sealed water;
  • do not eat where there is no running water or toilet.

Proper nutrition

To travel and stay healthy, you need to watch your diet. Typically, people consume more heavy food and alcohol on vacation than at home. Of course, you can sometimes allow yourself to relax, but you also need to remember about your health. Include fruits and vegetables in your diet, as well as foods rich in protein. This can help you feel good throughout your vacation.

Interaction with local residents

By interacting with the locals, you can have a unique and exciting experience that will add new colors to your trip. When going on a trip to any country, you should carefully study the traditions and behavioral characteristics that are accepted there. You can learn a few basic phrases in the local language to make your trip more comfortable. Also, don’t forget about non-verbal communication. Remember that the meaning of gestures may vary in different parts of the world. Make sure you use the right signs to get your point across. If you learn about the country’s peculiarities in advance, you can avoid awkward situations and also show your respect for people.

And, of course, don’t forget about health insurance, which will help you get quality medical care if necessary. We wish you pleasant and safe travels!

Your region, your mayor, your vote: People will decide who leads a £4 billion boost for the East Midlands

A £4 billion investment in the future of the East Midlands will be guided by a public vote.

Nottinghamshire, Nottingham, Derbyshire and Derby, have opened the door to a massive investment in transport, skills, housing and the environment after securing a deal to set up a combined county authority covering the region.

But what the Combined Authority does will be led by a mayor – and Gedling borough residents and the public from across Nottinghamshire, Nottingham, Derbyshire and Derby get to decide who that mayor is.

The first ever election for a Mayor of the East Midlands will take place on Thursday 2 May, and a campaign has just been launched to encourage people to head to the polls on voting day.

The £4 billion investment has been made possible after government agreed to give up some of its powers and transfer them to the mayor and combined authority through a landmark devolution deal agreed in 2022.

The move means that the East Midlands will be on an equal footing with areas like the West Midlands, Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire, where elected mayors have secured similar large-scale investment pots.

An elected mayor will give the East Midlands a voice at the national table able to make the case for much greater investment from both government and private sector.

The East Midlands deal is one of the biggest so far, and the team setting up the combined county authority say the mayor will have the powers and resources to begin a long-term process of growing the region’s economy by investing in skills that lead to better jobs, transport that works better across the region, housing where it’s needed and an economy equipped to deal with net zero.

Mark Rogers, interim Chief Executive of the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) said: “This is a big deal in every sense. It’s on a scale that the East Midlands hasn’t seen before, and gives it the powers and resources it needs to turn round under-investment, tackle challenges and open up massive new opportunities for people and places.

“This is all about bringing power back to the East Midlands, and the most significant part of that process is the vote – the people will decide who’ll lead this transformation.”

The campaign to encourage voting is based on the shift of powers from Westminster to the East Midlands. With a slogan ‘here, not there’ it promotes the powers the mayor will have to take big decisions about the future of the East Midlands here in the region rather than in London.

The combined county authority is being formed by Derbyshire County Council, Derby City Council, Nottinghamshire County Council and Nottingham City Council and was developed in partnership with district and borough councils across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. Leaders and deputy leaders from each authority will sit on the combined county authority, but they’ll also be advised by specialists from different parts of the community.

This includes a business advisory board that will be developed by the interim representative for business, David Williams, who chairs the law firm Geldards, which has a major office presence in both Derby and Nottingham.

He said: “This is going to make a huge difference to the East Midlands and there’s a clear emphasis on investing in projects and places that are going to support a long-term improvement to people’s lives.

“This is why it’s so important that everyone out there has their say. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to invest billions of pounds in people’s futures – so our people need to decide who they want to make the key decisions.”

The mayor will lead a combined county authority that is being given powers currently held by Westminster to invest over the long-term in priorities like transport, skills, housing and regeneration and net zero. It won’t duplicate what local councils do.

The object is to invest in ways that suit the East Midlands, making it easier to travel across different East Midlands transport networks, matching skills to what the region’s businesses do, enabling house building and land regeneration where it’s needed and exploiting the region’s strengths in net zero technologies to create a robust, renewable energy system.

The EMCCA is being funded by government and will not take money away from existing councils.

Eggcellent work in Lambley as chocolate Easter egg wall demolished for charity

As Easter approached The Robin Hood Inn in Lambley started an Easter egg collection to support children’s cancer charities.

Gedling Eye caught up with Jo Leafe, manager of the popular local pub who said: “We have a regular, Pete who mentioned that he had done an Easter egg collection in the Robin Hood Inn a few years ago. Pete’s nephew, Ryan died from a cancerous brain tumour that progressed down his spine so we chose to support children’s cancer charities as this is a cause close to Pete’s heart.

“People have been amazed by the scale of the wall. We have even had strangers in that left us money so we could go out and buy eggs to add to the wall. Paul and I would like to thank everyone that donated and we couldn’t have done it without them.

“In total we managed to get a massive 344 eggs and we even had an anonymous donation of over 50 eggs.

“When the chocolate Easter egg wall was taken down we donated the eggs to the teenage cancer ward at City Hospital, Maggies at the City Hospital, Haywood House, the childrens ward at the QMC, Arnold Foodbank, The Salvation Army and Spring Lane Care Home.”

The Robin Hood Inn is located at 82 Main Street, Lambley, NG4 4PP and can be contacted by telephone on 0115 931 3906 or by email at robinhood.lambley@phoenixpub.co.uk.

Match Report: Cleethorpes Town 2 – 0 Carlton Town FC

NPL First Division East – 27 March 2024

Cleethorpes Town goalkeeper Heath Richardson produced an outstanding display as Carlton Town were frustrated at the seaside, going down 2-0 to the Owls.

After the home side took a first half lead, Richardson made three top-drawer saves in the second half to deny the Millers during a spell of relentless pressure from the playoff chasers.  And a second Cleethorpes goal in added time confirmed Carlton’s defeat, despite an enterprising display.

Carlton made two changes to the side which had won at Dunston last time out.  Goalkeeper Felix Annan was unavailable and so Nykah Liburd-Hines returned to the team.  Shea Thompson-Harris had suffered a broken bone in his foot in that win and so David Adegbola returned to the side.

Beginning a run of six games in 14 days, Carlton began well and Nat Watson almost scored on just five minute when his cushioned header from a Lewis Durow cross went just over the bar.

Lamin Manneh then sent a whipped ball into the danger area but no-one was on hand to convert.

Liburd-Hines was off his line quickly to clear a long ball over the top as Clee came back into the game but Carlton almost scored midway through the half when some clever play between Watson and Durow led to the former shooting just wide.

Josh Venney fired high and wide from a good position for the home side before Liburd-Hines made a fine save from an early shot from Josh Walker.

Cleethorpes pushed forward and Curtis Bateson shot over the top from close range before the Owls opened the scoring on 38 minutes.  Liburd-Hines played the ball to Niall Hylton on the left.  He lost possession and Cleethorpes attacked down the right before crossing to Brody Robertson who converted on the turn.

The Millers almost levelled on the stroke of half time when Durow, Hylton and Watson combined to feed Greg Tempest but his shot was saved by Richardson.

Carlton brought on Niall Davie at half time to help get control of the midfield but Clee had the first chance with Liburd-Hines making a fine save from a Robertson free kick.  Carlton then forced the home side to retreat and spent more or less the next half an hour launching wave after wave of attacks.

Watson went on an excellent run before slipping the ball to Hylton on the right.  He beat Louis Boyd before crossing for an unmarked Watson just six yards out.  His header looked a certain goal until Richardson threw his arm to the right and tipped the ball over the bar.

Manneh then played the ball to substitute Mamadoh Sylla-Diablo and his shot from 25 yards looked destined for the top corner until another stunning save from Richardson.

Still Carlton pushed forward.  A Manneh corner was missed by Davie at the near post.  The ball fell to Watson who crossed for Manneh to shoot.  Richardson saved but the rebound fell to Manneh who fired over when it looked easier to score.

Alex Howes was playing a deeper role in front of the defence and he impressed, alongside the rock solid Dan Brown and Dean Freeman partnership, in ensuring Clee barely had the ball.  But they did have the odd chance and Liburd-Hines made an excellent save from Robertson with time running out.

Micah Jebbison joined proceedings and he had a superb chance to level when he ran though on goal after Sylla-Diallo had played the ball to Davie.  But Jebbison shot straight at Richardson and the goalkeeper saved yet again.  The subsequent corner from Durow beat everyone but there was nobody at the back post to convert.

Durow then moved the ball to Jebbison who tried an audacious flick from the edge of the box but Richardson recovered his ground to save.  Freeman then headed just past the post from the following corner.

It was apparent that it just wasn’t Carlton’s night and Josh Walker rubbed salt into the Millers wounds when he headed home unmarked from a corner in added time to confirm the win for the Owls.

The Carlton squad came across to thank the small band of travelling supporters at the end.  It was appreciated as always.
