An Arnold hair salon is on the crest of a wave after being crowned ‘Salon of the Year’ at the KH Hair Group’s award ceremony

KH Hair, in High Street, Arnold, took the prestige accolade on an evening where a total of 21 individual awards were handed out.

The much-anticipated event took place on June 9 on the outdoor terrace at Binks Yard in Nottingham City Centre, where KH Hair’s 200+ staff and VIP guests from Wella and ghd came together to celebrate the achievements of the Group’s 20 salons.

Always the most coveted accolade of the night, Salon of the Year, was awarded jointly to the team at KH Hair on High Street who took to the stage alongside the Group’s Castle Gate salon in recognition of their excellent performances in customer service, turnover and retail sales.

Now time to pedestrianise Netherfield town centre

Sir,

It is time someone had the sense to now pedestrianise Netherfield town centre.

The town has become a rat run for those trying to flee the chaos of Victoria Retail Park and Colwick Loop Road to get to Carlton and Gedling – and soon someone will be killed. These cars speed constantly and have no regard for pedestrians using the crossings.

Let us remove the Victoria Road cut through from the pharmacy on the corner up until the new dentist by the roundabout.

Such a move might encourage more cafes and bars to be established that could use this space for outdoor seating for customers and giving the town a more cosmopolitan vibe.

Arnold and Carlton always seem to be handed money so maybe funding can now be found to benefit poor Netherfield.

Some dog owners are so ignorant

Dog mess warning banner
PICTURED: A new banner has been placed outside Pinewood Infant School

Sir,

This Tuesday morning, just after 7.30am as I went out to get my paper, when I narrowly missed a huge pile of dog poo (obviously some dog owner regrettably hadn’t seen it – probably on their mobile phone).

It is obviously a very big dog, or perhaps a small well-fed lion on a leash.

It took my five buckets of water and a going over with a stiff brush to clear the offending mess from outside my house.

And it’s not the first time either – the paths are regularly soiled in such a manner by a very large animal.

So if anyone knows of someone with a large dog or possibly a lion, who takes the animal out after dark without a wheelbarrow and a shovel that’s probably the person the authorities are now out looking for. How ignorant some dog owners are.

Does anyone remember Clough Netherfield appearance?

Sir,

I have just noticed that there is a plaque on the paved area by the Co-op in Netherfield saying the space was opened by Forest legendary manager Brian Clough. I was not aware of this!

I am a big Clough fan and I wish I had seen this.

I could not find photos anywhere online of the event. Has anyone got any pictures or was there and share their memories.

Climate-themed hustings for Gedling’s General Election candidates

Would-be MPs will be put on the spot over the climate crisis at a hustings event in Mapperley next week.

Gedling Climate Change Group and Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust have teamed up to organise the event, which will take place on Monday, June 17 at 7pm at St James Church Centre on Marshall Hill Drive.

Organisers say the meeting is open to everyone that wants to ask questions and hear the views of the parliamentary candidates on the environment, with all five parties being represented.

The event is being co-organised by Gedling Climate Change Group

Erin McDaid from Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust Tackling said that climate chaos and nature depletion can no longer be shunted to the bottom of the political agenda

He said: “We have seen the increasing climate-driven devastation of flooding of homes and fields locally over the past years and the loss of nature and crops, both of which are financially expensive.

“The next five years will be crucial if a safe and secure future is to be achieved for both residents and wildlife”.

The event comes on the back of the two very successful events organised by Gedling Climate Change Group. A Nature Convention was held last November following April’s borough council hustings in 2023 which were really well attended, showing the increasing concerns of local people.

“We know local people are concerned about what is happening to the climate and our precious wildlife,” said Bob Vaughan-Newton, chair of Gedling Climate Change Group.

“We want candidates to take a leadership role in tackling these really important and urgent issues”

The parliamentary candidates are as follows:

    Tom Randall for Conservatives,
    Dominic Berry for Greens,
    Michael Payne for Labour,
    Tad Jones for LibDems,
    Simon Christy for Reform UK.

The bereaved can now book final farewells to their loved ones at 6pm, 7pm and 8pm from Monday to Friday

“We believe this could provide a comforting environment for a funeral.

“In addition, offering later services may help those with friends and relatives who want to pay their respects but have difficulty attending a daytime service because of other commitments.

“We pride ourselves on providing exceptional care, and part of that involves enabling families to create a uniquely personal funeral service as a final farewell to their loved one, and opportunity to be able to choose a twilight service is just another way in which we provide more choice for those we support.

“Bereaved families can now request this service when making arrangements with their funeral director.”

Major supermarkets accused of making ‘misleading’ freshly baked bread claims

Complaints have been made about five major supermarkets to trading standards bodies about ‘misleading’ claims on ‘freshly-baked’ bread packaging.

The Real Bread Campaign, run by Sustain, has submitted a trading standard complaint over how Sainsbury’s, Lidl and Co-op, and Tesco are marketing their bakery products, The Guardian reported.

Campaigners said Sainsbury’s bakery section products advertise claims such as “freshly made every day” and “freshly baked bread”, however it is understood the grocer is moving to rebaking bread made in other locations.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s told the publication it had reviewed its “bakery services and recipes earlier this year” in a bid to ensure “good food affordable for everyone”.

They added: “More of our stores now bake pre-prepared dough in-store, as it allows us to offer customers the best quality in-store bakery products at great value. Our bakery items are also clearly labelled in line with legislation and trading standards.”

Lidl was also challenged over its use of “our fresh in-store bakery” and “baked for you throughout the day,”  despite the supermarket only putting pre-made products in the oven to achieve a brown, crispier look.

Likewise, the group has also accused Co-op of mislabelling and misleading over its “freshly prepared”, “sourdough” baguette, which the campaign said was first baked and manufactured by a third party.

A Co-op spokesperson said: “We pride ourselves on offering an affordable and great quality in-store bakery range for our member owners and customers – including our much-loved Irresistible sourdough baguette which is freshly prepared and baked by trained colleagues across our stores every day.”

The campaign also earlier accused Tesco of making claims such as “expertly baked in store since 1968”, “baking fresh from our ovens every day” and “freshly baked throughout the day” appear on packaging, store displays and its website, even in stores where this is not the case.

This includes stores where no bread is freshly baked from scratch on-site, stores where baking expertise is not required and stores that did not exist in 1968.

Real bread campaign co-ordinator Chris Young said at time: “Over a number of years, Tesco has been shutting down in-store bakeries and making skilled baker roles redundant, replacing fresh bread making with staff members loading pre-made products into loaf tanning salons.

“We’re saddened by the company’s audacity in telling shoppers that things are being expertly, freshly baked and amazed that they’ve been allowed to continue making such claims.”

A spokesperson for Tesco responded: “In some stores where we don’t have the space to bake everything from scratch, we work closely with our bakery suppliers who prepare dough for us that trained colleagues bake every day in store.

“The signage we use in each individual store reflects the different ways we prepare bread, and our approach has been agreed with our Trading Standards Primary Authority.”

Tesco also pointed out that while the supermarket giant had over 400 large stores which contain bakeries where products are made from scratch, and can be described as ‘fresh’ or ‘freshly baked’.

They added that they did not use terminology such as “fresh’ or ‘freshly baked’ on products made from frozen or part-baked dough.

    Lidl were contacted for comment.
