Mental health first aiders to be introduced at Gedling Borough Council to help staff

Mental health first aiders are to be introduced at Gedling Borough Council to help staff members who may be going through difficult times.

The Labour-run authority is looking to create the positions later in the year.

Staff members who seek help from the first aiders will be signposted to the relevant support they need.

The new roles were announced during a Joint Consultative and Safety Committee meeting on Tuesday (August 27).

David Archer, the head of HR, performance and service planning, said: “The measures we have taken and continue to take to support people at work, sometimes to return to work, I am really proud of.

“There is provision later in the year to hopefully take on mental health first aiders in the workforce as well. It will be a signposting role to help support people who are perhaps having more difficult times and need support.”

Concerns over staff well-being were raised by committee chairman Cllr Jim Creamer (Lab), as two roles will be merged into one to save money.

Two occupied job roles, customer insight and performance management, have been merged into a single full-time role.

The two roles had together equated to over 44 hours’ work in a single week, prompting concern from Cllr Creamer over work load.

“None of us should work in ways that are damaging to us,” Mr Archer added.

“We would need to perhaps look at some of the things we do and do them differently and cut out some things as well.”

During the meeting a potential pay rise for all staff members – other than chief officers – was discussed.

In February unions including GMB, Unite and Unison asked for an increase of at least £3,000, or 10 per cent, as well as a two-hour reduction in the working week, an additional day of annual leave for personal or well-being purposes and a phased approach to reaching a minimum pay rate of £15 an hour in a maximum of two years.

National Employers, which represents local authorities, has made a full and final offer to increase most pay by £1,290.

Providing an update Mr Archer said: “There has been some progress.

“The [National] Employers have made a full and final offer to increase most pay by £1,290 per year, or 2.5 per cent.

“If you look at the pay awards that have happened over the last three years, from April 2021 to the current rate of pay, the people in the bottom rate of pay will have had an increase of 29 per cent, in the middle of the pay bands nearly 19 per cent, and nearly 11 per cent at the top.

“The cost of the pay award as is proposed nationally is about 4.03 per cent, for us about 4.05 per cent, on the pay bill. So there is an effect.

“Where we are at in terms of that national negotiation is GMB have now balloted members who say they are prepared to accept the national pay award.

“That said Unite, who we don’t recognise locally but for the purposes of national pay bargaining we do, so Unite and Unison both are now going out to ballot for industrial action.

“For Unison the ballot runs until October 16 and to October 15 for Unite. I think we won’t get into a position until at least November and possibly later. It depends on the outcome of the ballot. There is potential for industrial action, strike action, [but] it may be there’s an agreed settlement.”

‘Inadequate’ Carlton care home placed into special measures over safety concerns

A Carlton care home has been rated ‘inadequate’ and placed into special measures by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Braywood Gardens will now be been prevented from admitting new residents without CQC’s permission, following an inspection carried out in May.

The residential care home on Millbrook Drive is operated by Runwood Homes Limited, and provides accommodation and personal care to older people, some of whom are living with dementia. At the time of this inspection there were 88 people living the home.

The inspection was prompted in part due to concerns CQC had received around people’s safety and personal care being provided to people.

Following this inspection, the home’s overall rating has dropped from requires improvement to inadequate. Its ratings for being effective and caring dropped from good to inadequate. It has again been rated requires improvement for being safe and well-led. On this occasion, CQC partially inspected how responsive the service was, focusing on areas where they received concerns. Therefore, it remains rated as good from their previous inspection.

CQC have placed conditions on the service to prevent more people from being admitted without CQC’s permission, until significant improvements have been made. The service has also been placed in special measures, which means it will be kept under close review by CQC to keep people already living there safe whilst improvements are made. If CQC doesn’t see rapid and widespread improvement, further action will be taken.

Greg Rielly, CQC deputy director of operations in the midlands, said:  “When we inspected Braywood Gardens, it was concerning to see a lack of strong leadership. Our experience tells us that when a service isn’t well-led, it is less likely they’re able to meet people’s needs in the other areas we inspect, which is what we found here.

“The main issue was that leaders didn’t ensure there were enough staff to support the people living at the home which impacted the quality of care people were receiving.

Runwood Homes said an immediate and robust action plan was put in place following the inspection undertaken by CQC

“For example, we saw one person try to stand but was unsteady on their feet. As there wasn’t any staff around to help, our inspector had to help them to sit back down, or they would have likely fallen over. When we brought this up with staff, they said they were too busy to help.

“We heard people often having to shout for staff to support them which didn’t always happen. One person told us they had complained that staff weren’t quick enough when they needed support to use the toilet. The staff member responded by telling them to use their incontinence pad and they would have to wait in their used pad until the morning when staff could support them. This shows staff didn’t always treat people with kindness or dignity.

“During our visit, people also told us they were worried about their safety. We found staff had recorded incidents where residents had been in altercations with each other, which hadn’t been referred to the local authority safeguarding team. This means these incidents hadn’t been investigated thoroughly and people were at risk of having them happen again as a result.

“Vulnerable people were relying on all staff members to act as their advocates, to help them live their best lives and it is unacceptable the people they relied on were treating them this way.

“We have told Braywood Gardens where we expect to see rapid and widespread improvements and will continue to monitor them closely to keep people safe while this happens. We’ve also told them they can’t admit any new residents until these improvements are made. We will return to check on their progress and won’t hesitate to take further action if people are not receiving the care they have a right to expect.”

A spokesperson for Braywood Gardens told the BBC’s Local Democray Service: “We can confirm that an immediate and robust action plan was put in place following the inspection undertaken by CQC. These findings were also identified by the provider and a managerial change was made which has instantly brought the service back to the high standard we have seen previously at Braywood Gardens.

“Co-working with Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) has been very productive and they too recognise the service is now providing the high level of care formerly seen.

“We are actively encouraging a return inspection visit from CQC where we expect the service to return to an overall Good rating.

“We take on board all findings raised by CQC and have worked tirelessly to instantly put these areas right. We are pleased to say the home is now in a very good position with exceptional leadership and staff.

“We thank our staff and the home manager for their efficient and professional response to see the service back to the expected standard and will work with all key stakeholders to see this maintained.”

New figures show ‘disproportionate’ number of women in lower paid jobs at Gedling Borough Council

There are a ‘disproportionate’ number of women in the lower paid jobs at Gedling Borough Council, new figures show.

According to the Labour-run authority, women account for 62.3 per cent of all staff working in the lowest paid job roles as of March 31, 2024.

The previous year 52.2 per cent of all staff in these roles were women, compared to 48.76 per cent the year before that.

During a Joint Consultative and Safety Committee meeting on Tuesday (August 27) David Archer, the head of HR, performance and service planning, said: “A number of jobs have moved on and become more enriched as we’ve moved along with time.

“But what we are left with towards the bottom end of our pay scales are a lot of part-time jobs, predominantly in leisure services.

“Societally, as wrong as it might be, often part-time work and jobs are undertaken by women rather than men.

“For us that is what it looks like in terms of how the gender pay split is perhaps showing more women proportionally in that lower quartile than men.”

Cllr Catherine Pope (Lab), a member of the committee, added: “It troubles me a bit around this rationale around the part-time jobs because I think there’s a cause and effect quandary going on.

“Arguably why are all the part-time jobs in the lowest paid category? It would be good to see something about the ability to request part-time working across the board and that people in those part-time jobs are given the opportunity to get better paid jobs and aren’t just stuck in the lowest quartile.”

Gedling Borough Council
According to the borough council, its average (mean) gender pay gap is within a reasonable range at 4.1 per cen

Mr Archer said the council’s aim is to enrich part-time jobs, including receptionist roles, through better training as to allow staff to conduct a wider range of tasks and increase their pay.

Any organisation that has 250 employees or more must provide gender pay gap data, as required by the Government.

The new Labour Government is now looking at requirements to extend the scrutiny to ethnicity and disability too.

According to the borough council, its average (mean) gender pay gap is within a reasonable range at 4.1 per cent.

However it has widened from 2.9 per cent in 2023 and 3.79 per cent in 2022.

Mr Archer said: “The mean gender pay gap is the one that is most often quoted in gender pay gap information.

“That is at 4.1 per cent for us this year, higher than last year, but actually lower than it has been as well [in 2021 and 2018].

“When you look at information from other similar organisations we seem to be well within what is considered to be a reasonable range.

“Anything other than zero is not something to rest your laurels on, so we need to continue to report and continue to find ways to make a difference.”

In past years the council offered bonuses when it found it difficult or impossible to recruit for some jobs.

However in 2024 the council says it managed to recruit without the need for a market supplement.

How local businesses in Gedling are navigating economic uncertainty: The role of audit assurance

Economic uncertainty has become a common challenge for many local businesses in Gedling. With fluctuating markets, unpredictable costs, and changing consumer behaviours, it can be hard to stay afloat. However, local businesses are showing remarkable resilience and creativity in navigating these choppy waters. One key strategy that has emerged is the increased reliance on audit assurance. This approach helps businesses gain a clear understanding of their financial position, ensuring they can make informed decisions that could be the difference between sinking or swimming.

The Role of Audit Assurance

So, what exactly is audit assurance? In simple terms, it’s a process that involves the independent examination of your business’s financial statements. This examination is carried out by auditing experts who provide an unbiased opinion on whether your financial records are accurate and free from misstatements.

The importance of audit assurance lies in its ability to enhance the reliability of your financial information. For businesses in Gedling, this means you can trust that your financial statements are a true reflection of your company’s financial health. This assurance is crucial when making strategic decisions, securing loans, or attracting investors.

Building Trust with Stakeholders

Trust is a key component of any successful business, and audit assurance plays a significant role in building and maintaining that trust. When your financial records are verified by auditing experts, it sends a strong message to stakeholders that your business is transparent and well-managed.

For local businesses in Gedling, this trust can be the deciding factor in whether customers, suppliers, and investors choose to work with you. By providing accurate and reliable financial information, audit assurance helps to reinforce your reputation, making it easier to attract and retain these essential relationships.

Enhancing Decision-Making Capabilities

Making informed decisions is more important than ever in times of economic uncertainty. As a business owner in Gedling, you need to know where you stand financially to make the best choices for your future. Audit assurance provides the insights you need to make those decisions with confidence.

With the help of auditing experts, you can identify potential risks and opportunities that might not be immediately apparent. Whether it’s deciding to expand your business, cut costs, or invest in new technology, having a clear and accurate understanding of your financial situation is critical. Audit assurance ensures that you have the information you need to make the right moves.

Supporting Business Growth

Even in uncertain times, growth is still possible. Many businesses in Gedling are finding that audit assurance is not just about safeguarding against risks; it’s also about identifying opportunities for expansion and improvement. When your financial statements are clear and reliable, you can spot areas where your business can grow.

For example, working with Price Bailey auditing experts can help you uncover inefficiencies in your operations, streamline processes, and ultimately increase profitability. This growth-oriented approach to audit assurance is helping local businesses in Gedling not just weather the storm, but also emerge stronger on the other side.

Managing Risk More Effectively

Risk management is a critical aspect of running a business, especially during times of economic uncertainty. Without a clear understanding of the risks you face, it’s easy to be caught off guard by unexpected challenges. Audit assurance helps businesses in Gedling by identifying these risks before they become major problems.

With the guidance of auditing experts, you can develop strategies to mitigate these risks and protect your business. Whether it’s financial risk, operational risk, or compliance risk, audit assurance provides the insights you need to manage these challenges effectively, ensuring your business remains resilient in the face of adversity.

Improving Financial Transparency

Transparency is increasingly important in today’s business environment. Customers, investors, and regulators all expect businesses to be open and honest about their financial situation. For businesses in Gedling, audit assurance plays a key role in achieving this transparency.

By ensuring that your financial statements are accurate and reliable, audit assurance helps you meet these expectations. This transparency not only builds trust with stakeholders but also enhances your reputation in the community. As a result, your business is more likely to attract new customers, investors, and partners who value honesty and integrity.

Ensuring Compliance with Regulations

Staying compliant with regulations can be challenging in a constantly changing economic landscape. However, non-compliance can result in significant penalties and damage to your business’s reputation. Audit assurance helps businesses in Gedling stay on top of regulatory requirements by providing a thorough review of their financial records.

With the help of auditing experts, you can ensure that your business is meeting all necessary legal and regulatory obligations. This not only protects you from potential fines but also gives you peace of mind, knowing that your business is operating within the law.

Increasing Efficiency and Reducing Costs

In times of economic uncertainty, every penny counts. Businesses in Gedling are increasingly turning to audit assurance to help identify areas where they can reduce costs and improve efficiency. By closely examining your financial records, auditing experts can uncover inefficiencies that might be costing your business money.

Whether it’s streamlining your operations, cutting unnecessary expenses, or renegotiating contracts with suppliers, audit assurance provides the insights you need to make these changes. By improving efficiency and reducing costs, you can ensure that your business remains competitive, even in challenging economic times.

Strengthening Internal Controls

Internal controls are the backbone of a well-managed business, particularly during times of economic uncertainty. For businesses in Gedling, having robust internal controls can prevent financial discrepancies and ensure operations run smoothly. Audit assurance plays a crucial role in evaluating and enhancing these controls, making sure that every process within your business is functioning as it should.

By working with auditing experts, you can identify weaknesses in your internal controls and implement improvements. This not only reduces the risk of errors or fraud but also enhances the overall efficiency of your business operations. Strong internal controls, supported by audit assurance, provide the foundation your business needs to remain resilient and successful.

Enhancing Financial Planning

Effective financial planning is essential for navigating economic uncertainty. For businesses in Gedling, audit assurance provides the accurate financial data needed to create realistic and strategic financial plans. By having a clear understanding of your current financial position, you can set achievable goals and make informed decisions that support long-term stability and growth.

Auditing experts assist in analysing past performance and forecasting future financial trends, allowing you to plan for various scenarios. This proactive approach to financial planning ensures that your business is prepared for potential challenges and can take advantage of opportunities as they arise.

Boosting Investor Confidence

Investor confidence is crucial for businesses looking to secure funding or attract new investors. In uncertain economic times, potential investors are more cautious and demand greater transparency. Audit assurance helps Gedling businesses meet these expectations by providing credible and reliable financial information that reassures investors of the business’s stability and potential.

By having your financial statements verified by auditing experts, you demonstrate a commitment to transparency and good governance. This makes your business more attractive to investors and helps secure the funding needed to grow and expand, even in a challenging economic environment.

Navigating economic uncertainty is no easy task, but local businesses in Gedling are proving that it’s possible with the right strategies in place. Audit assurance is emerging as a vital tool in this journey, providing the clarity, confidence, and insights needed to make informed decisions. Car key thief who led police on chase after being spotted in Woodthorpe is jailed

A car thief who entered a family’s home and took the keys to their car before driving off in it led police on a chase after being spotted driving around Woodthorpe.

Mark Gibson drove dangerously, reaching speeds of around 70mph in 30mph zones, as he desperately tried to evade capture.

He had stolen a Nissan Qashqai from the driveway of a home in Green Mews, Bestwood.

The victim was alerted by an alarm going off. When he woke up, around 4.30am on Saturday, July 13, he saw his car had gone and called the police.

An officer spotted the Nissan in the Woodthorpe area, followed it, and activated his blue lights to try to get Gibson to stop but the 32-year-old continued to accelerate away.

An officer spotted the Nissan in the Woodthorpe area, followed it, and activated his blue lights to try to get Gibson to stop but the 32-year-old continued to accelerate away

At one point Gibson was driving on a metal rim after one of the Nissan’s tyres had shredded.

The car was later found damaged and abandoned in the Aspley area.

Area searches were carried out which led to Gibson being arrested in the Bestwood area in connection with the incident. He was subsequently charged.

Gibson appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday (23) where he pleaded guilty to burglary, aggravated vehicle taking, and dangerous driving.

He was jailed for four years and banned from driving for four years. Gibson must pass an extended driving re-test before he is eligible to drive again.

Detective Constable Tom Lowe, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “I hope the sentence handed down to Gibson will provide some comfort to the victims who were left shocked and distressed by his crimes.

“Preventing and reducing burglary and vehicle crime are among our highest priorities as a force and we will continue to work hard daily to keep people and their property safe.”

Plans to demolish Friar Tuck pub in Arnold and build retirement flats being considered by Gedling Borough Council

Plans have been revealed that would see an Arnold pub closed and knocked down so a retirement living development can be built in its place.

The plans submitted to Gedling Borough Council follow an agreement between pub company Greene King and a developer for the Friar Tuck, Gedling Road.

They include demolition of the building in favour of 51 apartments for people over the age of 60.

The applicant is McCarthy Stone, a developer and manager of retirement communities.

The pub is currently owned by Greene King and was originally opened in 1958 by the Home Brewery Company, a local Daybrook brewery.

The planning application also seeks the demolition of the pub.

The proposal includes the building of 15 two-bed and 36 one-bed apartments in a three-storey ‘L’ shape development with a flat roof to allow for lower resident running costs through the use of solar panels.

The site would include a communal residents lounge, a mobility scooter store, a communal garden along with 22 available parking spaces.

The Friar Tuck could be demolished to make way for retirement flats

The company’s planning application reads: “Retirement housing makes an enormous difference to the lives of older people across the country.

“The proposition helps residents stay happier and healthier for longer, enabling them to maintain their independence, find a community
and make new friendships- It also unlocks the housing market by releasing larger homes at the top of the ladder.

“McCarthy Stone have developed a new development concept exclusively to appeal to people over the age of 60 who reside in an average priced home between £150k-£250k, for whom traditional retirement living developments
are not a viable alternative.”

The council’s strategic housing plans have required that five of the apartments be shared ownership and for five to be affordable rent.

Since 2010 McCarthy Stone have opened 500 retirement developments nationwide, supporting more than 22,500 older people to date.

In each of their developments, they remain as the landlord and managing agent.

A Greene King spokesperson for the Friar Tuck said: “Our pub remains open and trading as normal for the foreseeable future, however, as we also consider the longer-term options for the building, we have reached an agreement in principle with McCarthy and Stone. Our Priority is keeping our team up to date and we will be updating them directly if any further details are confirmed.”

The plans are to be considered and decided by Gedling Borough Council at a later date.

Hallowe’en event with ‘monster hunt’ to take place at Bestwood Country Park to raise money for community

A Hallowe’en-themed event has been planned at Bestwood Country Park to raise money for community organisations and charities.

The themed event, which will feature a woodland monster hunt and around 30 stalls, will take place near Bestwood Lodge Hotel at Bestwood Country Park on October 27.

Gedling Borough Council says it has now given the organiser, Jolly Gardener Events, permission to run the event.

It will take place between 12pm and 4pm and more than 1,000 people are expected to attend.

The council says it hopes it will  “encourage use of the council’s parks and open spaces”.

Andrew Flynn, of Jolly Gardener Events, says entry will cost £1 and all proceeds will go towards community organisations and charities, including Men in Sheds and foodbanks.

“I started putting on events about 18 months ago, and so far raised over £3,000 for the community,” Mr Flynn said.

“The idea was to bring the community together as well as raising funds for food kitchens and other good causes.

“I work with St. Albans Parish Council, who part fund the events, and every year they grow bigger and bigger, this year will be our third event.

“Not only does it bring the community together, but it supports local businesses and raises awareness of local groups like Men in Sheds, cat rescue centres and food banks.

“This is so people know where they can find help if needed, or support these organisations, whilst having a fun day out with friends and family.

“We average over 1,000 guests per event, and although small in comparison, we are growing at a rapid rate thanks to the community and word of mouth.

“For the Halloween event this year we have over 30 craft stalls from local businesses, a children’s disco, fancy dress, a best-carved pumpkin competition, zorb balls for adults and children, two licensed bars, free gifts for all children, free arts and crafts for all children and a monster hunt in the woods.

“The area will be fully decorated, and we also have golden tickets on sale, which includes early entry for the first 100 people, with a buffet and entertainment from 12 till 1pm, then the event opens to everyone else from 1pm.”

Entry will be £1 per person.
