DRIVERS in Gedling borough are being warned not to click the link on a fake DVLA text message doing the rounds.
The car tax scam was reported on social media with several local people posting images of the dodgy text they recently received.
The scam message reads: “FINAL REQUEST: DVLA Swansea have been trying to contact you, Click below for more information.”
The link then uses the “dvla.gov.uk” domain in the web address – but some have noticed the “.pw” extension that appears in the web address.
‘.pw’ is the country code for Palau which gives away the fact the text is actually a “phishing” scam – and not from the DVLA’s Swansea HQ, which uses ‘UK
Phishing scams use fake official-looking website that ask you to enter personal information like bank details and addresses before stealing it.
The “final request” and mention of “car tax disc” hints that users may owe money on their car – even though the tax disc was abolished back in 2014.
But the DVLA has now confirmed it does not send out text messages with links asking for personal details or payments.
In a tweet, the agency wrote: “We are aware of a text/email scam, which wrongly claims to have been sent by DVLA, asking drivers to verify their driving license and vehicle tax details via an online link and are currently investigating. Please delete it without clicking on any links.
