Arnold Ladies in comfortable win over Ilkeston

VICTORY: Arnold Town Ladies in action against Ilkeston
VICTORY: Arnold Town Ladies in action against Ilkeston

The first game for the second team in 2016 resulted in a comfortable win against Ilkeston Ladies at Eagle Valley today, with the game only going ahead as Arnold were able to switch the venue from Ilkeston due to the wet weather.

The management were pleasantly surprised to have 16 players to select from with a handful making themselves available having struggled with other commitments. They started off well with Molly Parker unlucky not to score within the first minute when her shot passed the wrong side of the post. Ilkeston setup to attack on the counter which gave Hannah Hughes and Danielle Pritchard plenty of time on the ball, which they used well to set Selina Luciw or Charlee Keetley through from the wing. With only half chances created it was a surprise to see the visitors take the lead. Having found no joy getting past the defence of Amy Nuthall, Ciara Button, Chloe Stocks and Alice Millns, they caught Arnold with a set peice. From a corner from the left the Ilkeston captain was free to finish past keeper Jessica Shelton.

This opened up the game with Arnold throwing players forward but with Ilkeston attacking the spaces left at the back. There was another blow as Danielle Pritchard had to be replaced when she picked up an ankle injury which saw the introduction on Kellie Hart. Composure was all that was needed in the final third and it was a cool head in Alice Milns that saw her calmly play the ball inside when others may have put their laces through it, it found Hannah Hughes who played the perfect ball inside the defender for Charlee Keetley to run on to, before cutting in and finding the far corner to equilise.

All square at the interval and after a half time talk from the management the intensity was increased which saw Emily Nelis slide infront of the keeper to get the touch that took the ball past the impressive Ilkeston number one and give Arnold the lead.

Substitutions saw Selina Luciw who had worked hard on the left wing replaced for Roanne Adams as well as Keeley Terry and Leighanne Powles entering the game. The chances may have caused Arnold to switch off for a moment as a long ball over the top beat the defence and the Ilkeston striker got just enough on it to knock it past Amy Sills and make the score line 2-2.

With ten minutes to go Samantha Hoyes came on and her pressure on the defender on Arnolds left created the chance for the ball into Molly Parker on the penalty spot, where she had time to have a touch before placing the ball through the on rushing keepers legs to give Arnold their third.

This opened the flood gates as Charlee Keetley drove through the box before opening her body out and again placing the ball in the far corner for her brace. This well taken goal obviously wetted the appetite of some of the players as minutes later defender Chloe Stocks played a one-two in the right back position before jet propelling along the touch line with the ball, cutting into the box and finishing with the tightest of angles to score the goal of the day. With the result safe there was still time for a sixth as Emily Nelis completed a good personal performance with her second of the match.

Another cup win and whilst not as convincing at times as it could have been its a great sign for the future that after a 6-2 win this team is still capable of much better.

Arnold Town Under 11’s also had success in the cup with an excellent 4-0 win over Radcliffe Olympics Under 11. The game was scheduled to be played at Bingham Road playing fields in Radcliffe but due to a water logged pitch was also moved to Eagle Valley.

Parents in Gedling borough are being encouraged to use the new Sugar Smart app and give their children a healthy start to the New Year.

Currently, 20.7% of four to five-year-olds are overweight or obese in the county, increasing to 30.7%in 10 to 11-year-olds. This means they are more likely to become obese adults who are more prone to a range of serious health problems, such as heart disease, some cancers and Type 2 diabetes. Nationally, there are now 2.5 million people suffering from Type 2 diabetes, 90% of which are overweight or obese.

The new Sugar Smart app has been launched to help parents to see how much sugar there is in everyday food and drink. The free app works by scanning the barcode of products and revealing the amount of total sugar it contains in cubes and grams.

Coun Joyce Bosnjak, chair of the Health and Wellbeing Board said: “The latest child obesity figures for the county highlight how important it is for families to cut back on sugar in the diet. Sugar is lurking in everyday food and drink, taking children over the maximum recommended amount.  This can lead to painful tooth decay, weight gain and obesity, which can also affect children’s wellbeing as they are more likely to be bullied, have low self-esteem and miss school.

“Parents can download the Sugar Smart app and take control of the amount of sugar their family consumes, to protect them from the health risks of having too much sugar.”

Fresh funding for borough art groups

0

Artists based in the borough have the opportunity for fresh funding after Nottingham County Council announced the launch of a new arts grant scheme.

The County Council is inviting applications from groups or individuals interested in running projects as part of its new Arts Grants Aid initiative, which was launched today.

The new fund has been set up to help increase participation in the arts across the county.

Financial support, ranging from £2,000 to £5,000 per year for the next two years, is available to individual artists, arts organisations or community and voluntary groups.

Councillor Joyce Bosnjak, Chairman of the Grant Aid Sub-Committee at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “Community arts projects enrich the lives of Nottinghamshire residents and I am delighted that we are able to continue our support for these schemes through the Nottinghamshire Arts Fund.

“The fund is specifically aimed at supporting projects with clear outcomes, such as getting more people to try arts activities, in areas where there is currently little or no provision and where schemes can provide a lasting legacy for the community.

“The arts are a brilliant way of bringing people together from different backgrounds, promoting community cohesion and having fun!

“In previous years we have been able to support a huge range of successful, innovative projects and I am sure there will be no shortage of similarly impressive applications for 2016-18.”

The closing date for applications is 9am on Monday 8 February 2016. Successful applicants will be confirmed in mid-May.

Patients asked to complete survey to help decide future of Colwick surgery

Patients at a surgery in Colwick are being asked to take part in a survey to help decide its future.

Trentside Medical Group’s contract to deliver GP services at Colwick Vale Surgery comes to an end on March 31, 2016, and they have announced they will not continue with the contract after this date due to “the unsustainable costs of running the surgery”.

Patients were invited to a public meeting in December to voice their concerns about the decision as part of a consultation period which runs until February 5, 2016.

The Nottingham North and East Clinical Commissioning Group, who organised the meeting, are keen to get the views of residents who couldn’t attend and who may be affected by asking them to complete an online survey.

A spokesman for Nottingham North and East Clinical Commissioning Group said: “Following the evaluation of the survey, we will work with our Local Authority colleagues and Trentside Medical Group to look at what options may be available to patients.

“We will also take into consideration the plans for a new state-of-the-art surgery on the old school site on Meadow Road in Netherfield. The plans for this have been agreed but are subject to funding.

“We are committed to ensuring all local patients can access good quality care and are working closely with the practice.”

Patients can complete the survey by visiting https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/colwick

Rail fares rise for Gedling borough passengers

0

New increased rail fare prices come into force today (January 2) for passengers making train journeys from across Gedling borough.

The 1.1% increase, which was announced at the end of last year, covers all national rail fares.

EMTGE
Paul Plummer, chief executive of the Rail Delivery Group which represents train operators and Network Rail, said:

“We know that nobody likes to pay more to travel by train, especially to get to work, and at 1.1 per cent this is the smallest average increase in fares for six years.

“On average 97p in every pound from fares is spent on trains, staff and other running costs. With passenger numbers doubling in the last 20 years, money from fares now almost covers the railway’s day-to-day operating costs.

“This allows government to focus its funding on building a bigger, better network when the railway is becoming increasingly important at driving economic growth, underpinning jobs, and connecting friends and families.”

A few passengers at Carlton Station this morning reacted angrily to the news of the increase.

Ted Smith, 63, from Carlton, said: “Although it’s not a massive increase to me, I wish they’d start investing in the trains we get on this line. Some are over 30 years old and just aren’t fit for purspose.”

Tina Smart, 72, from Burton Joyce, agreed. She said: “The trains need replacing. They want more money from us but we don’t see much in return.”

Tony Cave, who has adopted the stations at Carlton and Netherfield, said that although nationally fares have increased quite substantially, locally, they are still quite reasonably priced.

He told Gedling Eye: “Nottingham off peak return from Carlton will now be £2.80, which compares favourably with bus fares. The same applies to Lowdham which I think is now £3.00 return. Matlock has gone up 10p to £11.20 return.

“There are plenty of discounts available especially if you have a railcard. Also group travel tickets are available for three up to nine travelling together both ways (only 1 ticket provided for the group) gives them one third off standard fares.”

The rise is the smallest in six years.

Match Report: Carlton Town 5 Daventry Town 2

Carlton backed up their dramatic comeback win on boxing day with another victory, this time against Daventry Town, who are also just outside the playoff picture writes James Morton.

With the hosts taking the lead within thirty five seconds through Josh Rae, the lead was then doubled by top goalscorer Daniel Gordon with a deflected free kick that flew past Ben Heath in the Daventry goal. Although the visitors did grab a goal back before halftime when Ricky Hill’s powerful header beat Jack Steggles.

Josh Rae did restore the two-goal cushion midway through the second half, after fantastic build up play by Carlton. Yet, Daventry weren’t done as Panzo-Antonio slid in close range to give them a shout with minutes remaining. Not that Carlton allowed them to get anything with two late goals by Romaine Graham, to cap off a fantastic Christmas period for Carlton.

The first action came inside the first minute, as straight from the kick off, Josh Rae made a great move through the middle and ended up with the midfielder slotting the ball into the back of the net, with the first minute not even being completed.

The early pressure was all Carlton, as they came close again but Daniel Gordon blazed the ball over. Not that it mattered too much as a few minutes later Gordon got another chance from a free-kick, which was deflected by Curtis Hartley and into the back of the net with Ben Heath motionless in the Daventry goal.

A rare corner though for the visitors, just before the half hour mark, allowed them back into the game as Ricky Hill rose highest at the back post, and his powerful header powered past Jack Steggles in the Carlton goal.

Daventry then had a chance to level, but Hartley, who was in a great position, blazed his effort over the bar.

Before the break, Carlton mustered up a couple of great chances, both ending up at Romaine Graham, with his first effort, one-on-one, was blocked by the legs of Heath. Then his second was turned behind the post for a corner.

After the interval, Daventry came racing out of the blocks, and rattled the bar minutes into the second half, before also having a shot cleared off the line.

Though Carlton still looked threatening going forward, and Graham did well to hold up the ball in the box, unable to get a shot away, before laying it into the path of Gordon, but the Daventry defence were able to block the shot.

The visitors must have felt they had levelled the game when Edilson Panzo-Antonio had two glorious chances, with the first effort going well over the bar from close range, then the latter forcing a good save from Steggles.

After the close shaves at the other end, it was the Millers to then go hammer at tongue at the other end, with Rae’s curling effort going just over the bar. Though he did convert a chance minutes later when Graham played a great square ball across the floor to Joe Fitzpatrick, who played it straight to Rae, who smashed the effort past Heath.

Not that the Daventry threat was then nullified, as they went close again through skipper Jason Lee, but his shot from distance was well saved by Steggles.

Though Carlton had their tails up and Rae will feel he should have had a hat trick, after Gordon battled well to win the ball before playing it back to Rae who’s effort whacked the post. Falling straight to Romello Nangle, but his effort also went wide.

Then within a minute Graham had a shot go just wide of the target, before Rae had an effort go over the bar after beating Heath.

Though back came Daventry, with Adam Creaney having an effort go over the bar. Though, they did reduce the deficit once more when a low cross was converted by the sliding Panzo-Antonio from close range.

But back came Carlton, who were able to wrap up the game when Graham managed to find the back of the net, after a delightful ball from Rae over the top fell straight to Graham, with his effort rattling off the bar, but he was able to control the rebound before slotting the ball home.

Then in injury time, Graham went for the showboating finish, when he took the ball round Heath, just keeping the ball in play, then walking along the goal and passing the ball into the back of the net. Sealing the three points for Carlton, and six within forty-eight hours.

Match Report: Basford United 1 Carlton Town 2

A Jekyll and Hyde performance saw Carlton come away from the local derby with all three points after two goals at the death overturn what was seeming to be a defeat writes James Morton.

After a first half where Basford could have seen the game out of sight, saw them defend resiliently in the second half, but eventually Carlton forced home an equaliser through top scorer Daniel Gordon, and then he turned provider and minutes later Romaine Graham poked home a winner with the last kick of the game.

With the way the game started one could only predict a home win and even though Carlton did have the first chance as Romaine Graham hit a shot just wide of the target, you knew it was going to be a tough afternoon for the Millers.

With Basford going close moments later through Fabian Smith, who had a shot deflected wide of the target. Though the deadlock was broken with their next attack, as Ruben Wiggins-Thomas was played through one-on-one, Jack Steggles was able to prevent the shot, but the ball only went and fell straight to Blair Anderson who chipped the ball into the back of the net.

Carlton did muster up the occasional effort and came close when an Anthony Howell cross was met by the head of Romello Nangle, but went over the bar.

Basford then turned up the pressure, and came close through Boston United loanee Kyle Dixon, who blazed over the bar, then Stuart Hendrie moments later managed to cut inside from the by line, but Jack Steggles made a good save to deny them doubling the lead.

Wiggins-Thomas kept on hassling his former club, and proving how valuable he is at this level, when a shot from him beat Steggles and looked to go in the net, but rattled the crossbar instead, and bouncing clear to the relief of the Millers.

Although, before the break Carlton managed to create a couple of chances, firstly when Romaine Graham beat two players in the box, and then got the ball past the keeper, but Jake Wood got enough on it, to make sure the ball stayed out of the net and eventually cleared by the Basford defence. Then on the break of half time Nangle had an effort that went over the bar for a tight angle.

Whatever Wayne Scott said to his side at halftime, it definitely worked as second half Carlton came out the blocks sharply, and five minutes into the half created an opening as Howell played a free kick out wide to Niall Davie, who beat the full back, to then play the ball back to Josh Rae, but his shot went over the bar. Then Davie put in a dangerous corner that was shot over the bar by Josh Marshall.

Although, Basford did still have spells and Wiggins-Thomas was again able to beat the offside trap, but his shot beat Steggles and yet ended up rolling past the post and continued going for a throw in.

Though the Millers attack continued, and Nangle did well to beat his man, but Wood, rushing out, managed to block the strikers shot with his legs. Then Graham also managed to get the better of his marker, but his shot went agonisingly wide of the post after placing the ball beyond Wood.

It seemed as though a goal had to come, and again Howell did well to play it out wide to Nangle who whipped in a cross, but Rae was unable to keep his effort down, as it went over the bar.

Again Basford did create occasional chances as Billy Bennett must have expected his free kick to nestle in the back, but Steggles was able to clutch onto the ball.

Then the inclusion of Daniel Gordon changed to course of the match, when into stoppage time, a corner by Josh Rae ended up being headed back across goal, but with two shots already blocked, the ball fell to Gordon, who blasted the ball into the back of the net, and the big bad wolf of Carlton Town had finally blown down the Basford United defence to equalise.

Though Carlton were not going to settle for a point, and Gordon came running down the left flank before crossing the ball into the box, with Graham sticking out a leg, and clipping the ball into the back of the net, and sending the players, coaching staff and supporters of Carlton into delirium, winning it with the final kick of the game.

Basford United: Jake Wood, McNicholas, Bennett, Smith, Darkin, Meikle (C), Hendrie, Grayson, Wiggins-Thomas, Dixon, Anderson.

Subs: Duffy, Harrison, Grantham, Jack Wood, Myers.

Goal Scorers: Anderson 19.

Carlton Town: Steggles, Spencer, Fletcher, Walker, Graham, Marshall, Rae, Howell (C), Nangle (Gordon 81), Wholey (Newton 45), Davie.

Unused Subs: Gordon, Knight, Fizpatrick, Hill.

Goal Scorers: Gordon 90+3, Graham 90+5
