Popular nurse to bow out from hospice work in style with fundraising feast

0

A hospice nurse is holding a fundraising feast at a Gedling restaurant to mark her retirement after 12 years of service.

Nottinghamshire Hospice at Home nurse Penny Astill is celebrating her retirement in style by holding a charity meal at Amore’s restaurant in Gedlingon Wednesday, November 16, from 7pm.

Penny, who’s worked for Nottinghamshire Hospice for 12 years after retiring as a district nurse, said the job had given her what she missed from nursing.

She said: “When patients say things like ‘I’m so glad you were there when Mum died’, you just feel as though you’re helping, and helping people to die at home, if that’s what they want. Some people are really frightened of that, and we’re here to make it not so frightening.”

As well as the Hospice at Home service, Nottinghamshire Hospice also provides day therapy, including complementary massage, physiotherapy and counselling to give patients, their families and carers the full range of support available.

Penny wants her farewell celebration to raise money so that Nottinghamshire Hospice can continue to support local people with life-limiting illnesses, who depend on the warmth and dedication of Hospice staff like herself.

Amore’s Gedling, a family-run restaurant serving authentic Italian dishes, are putting on a special menu for the occasion including dishes like delicious antipasti and fresh sea bass in lemon sauce, with three courses for just £23. The restaurant seats up to 80, so anyone who would like to support the Hospice is welcome.

Campaigners to fight plans for green belt housing in Gedling

0

Angry residents from a Gedling community say they will fiercely fight plans to build new homes on their doorstep.

Gedling Borough Council are proposing to use land at Willow Farm to build 110 homes – as outlined in their Gedling Borough Local Planning Document.

But residents have now come together to form The Willow Farm Action Group to fight proposals.

A large number of objections to this proposal were submitted during the Gedling Borough Council’s period of consultation, which ran last summer, including a petition signed by 121 local residents and an objection raised by the local Willow Farm Primary School.

But despite strong opposition, the group say the council have left their plans for this site unaltered and have submitted the Local Planning Document 2016 to an Independent Planning Inspector for assessment.

A spokesman for the group told Gedling Eye: “The Willow Farm green belt land has been owned by a local building firm for many years and our Group believe that their ownership of the land is a clear indication of the industry’s view that if you purchase green belt land and wait long enough, this land will be surrendered for house building by local planning authorities.

“We are motivated by a strong desire to preserve our Green Belt and to speak up for a community who have overwhelmingly, in a Gedling Borough Council opinion survey published in 2014, expressed the need to protect this vital part of our landscape’”

The action group has now also contacted Sajid Javid, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government after comments he made recently about the need to protect green belt land in communities.

Gedling Borough Council today told Gedling Eye that they plan to listen to the concerns of local residents at a number of hearing sessions they will be hold in the New Year.

A council spokesperson said: “The borough has a challenging housing target of 7,250 new homes to deliver by 2028 and this cannot be delivered without the use of greenbelt sites.

“We have gone through a rigorous site selection process to identify sites, including the Willow Farm site.

“The concerns raised by residents about Willow Farm during the consultation stage earlier in the year have been carefully considered.  All comments received have been passed to the Planning Inspector who is now examining the Local Planning Document.

“As part of this process, hearing sessions will take place in the New Year. This process will allow for people to voice any issues or concerns they have to an independent Inspector who will then decide if the plan should be adopted.

41 homes to be built on site of former Blue Note pub in Carlton

0

Architects have drawn up plans to build homes on the site of a dilapidated pub in Carlton.

41 homes are set to be built on the site of the former Blue Note pub on Cavendish Road in Carlton.

Work has now begun and is expected to be completed by next Autumn.

The site will be made up of new family homes and flats and funding for the scheme has been provided by the Gedling Borough Council and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

The homes are being built by local construction firm Robert Woodhead Ltd’s specialist housing arm, Woodhead Living.

Some of the homes will be sold as part of a shared ownership scheme, with others being let and managed by Nottingham Community Housing Association (NCHA).

Allan Fisher, director of development at NCHA said: “Our ongoing partnership with Gedling Borough Council has lead to the transformation of three formerly derelict sites in the local area. This site is our biggest project yet and marks the start of an exciting new partnership with the Woodhead Group.

Free fishing for kids in Gedling borough following shake-up of rod licences

0

Kids in Gedling borough will be able to fish for free as part of a major shake-up of rod licences announced today by the Environment Agency.

Changes include a free rod licence for junior anglers which is hoped to encourage more young people to give fishing a go and secure the future of the sport.

Other moves include a rolling rod licence that lasts for 365 days from the day you buy it – rather than only running up until the end of March regardless of when it was bought.

The third change is one which carp and specimen anglers have long campaigned for: the use of 3 rods having just 1 licence, rather than needing 2.

There are also some small increases to standard charges – for example, a coarse fishing licence has been raised from £27 to £30. This is the first time the cost of a rod licence has increased since 2010 and all additional income generated will all go back into improving fisheries and services for anglers.

Mellish RFC weekly round-up

Here’s our weekly round-up from the Mellish RFC teams by Matt Bright

Mellish Ladies 32 v 5 Scunthorpe Ladies

Mellish Ladies welcomed Scunthorpe Ladies after an improved display away at Derby Vipers last week.

Mellish opened the scoring early on with a smart set of hands getting the ball wide to Ebony Hancock o dot down in the corner for a 5-0 lead. Soon after Mellish Ladies dominant pack gave a good platform for number 8 Sarah Driver to pick from a base of a scrum and run from just inside the Scunthorpe half to increase the lead to 10-0. Following a back and forth 10 minutes played mostly in the centre of the field Hannah Carrington put a smart kick through for Hannah Wilson to kick on and score to give Mellish a 15-0 lead. Further stoppages and some ill discipline by Mellish gave Scunthorpe Ladies some field position and after knocking on the door for a while they got over the try line to claim 5 points just before half time giving a 15-5 scoreline at the interval.

The message was simple at half time, to keep the pressure on and being direct. Mellish were soon on the scoreboard again as Ebony Hancock collected her 2nd try of the day, 20-5. Scunthorpe came back strong after this and spent a good period of time camped in the Mellish 22, but he ladies weathered the storm with only a yellow card for Sarah Driver and a Scunthorpe player for a bit of handbags.

With the sides at 14 players each Mellish moved down field and maximized an overlap with smart hands for Vahi Clerc to cross to give Mellish a 25-5 lead. The day was rounded off by another long range effort from Hanna Wilson fielding the ball just inside the Mellish half and breaking a couple of tackles to cross under the posts and add he conversion to her 2nd try of the day with the final play of the game giving Mellish a 32-5 victory.

Hundreds of ex-miners from Gedling Colliery to attend commemorative event on Monday

0

Hundreds of ex-coal miners are being invited to a former pit site 25 years after it closed its gates for the last time.

Over 200 ex-miners are expected to attend an afternoon of events planned to mark the anniversary of the last shift completed at Gedling Colliery.

The gathering will begin at the former Gedling Miners Welfare Club, now called Mapperley Plains Social Club, next Monday (7) at 13.30pm.

The ex-miners will then be taken to the former pit site, now home to Gedling Country Park followed by a visit to the Gedling Memorial Lamp where a ceremony will take place to remember those who died at the colliery.

A beacon will be lit at the park to mark the special event and the day will finish with a special presentation at the welfare club.

The event is being organised by Gedling Borough Council, the Gedling Miners Welfare Trust and the Friends of Gedling Country Park

As a colliery it was a cornerstone of the area until it closed in 1991 and stood derelict for over 20 years before Gedling Borough Council invested £1.6 million to turn it into a country park.

The last shift was recorded on Monday, November 7, 1991 – 25 years to the day that the commemorative event will take place.

New campaign urges businesses in Gedling borough to prepare for new £1 coin

0

A new campaign has been launched to help retailers and major businesses in Gedling borough prepare for the launch of the historic new £1 coin early next year.

The government and Royal Mint want to help all businesses in the area affected as the 30-year-old pound coin is brought out of circulation and replaced with a new 12-sided version.

The new pound coin will be the most secure of its kind in the world, to combat counterfeiters who have around 45 million counterfeit £1 coins currently in circulation.

New security features include a hologram-like image that changes from a ‘£’ symbol to the number ‘1’ when the coin is seen from different angles. It also has micro-lettering and milled edges.
