Police officer who starred in Bodycam Squad recognised for ‘outstanding’ work in Gedling borough

A police officer was last night recognised for his ‘relentless work’ in tracking down criminals in Gedling borough as part of a force operation.

Police Constable James Gill named as Police Officer of the Year at Nottinghamshire Police’s annual force awards at the Albert Hall in Nottingham last night (Nov 21).

PC Gill has been at the forefront of the national televised documentary series ‘Bodycam Squad’ which has documented the good work of officers across the county this year.

In the past year he has attended a number of highly dangerous incidents, including when a man jumped into the fast flowing Nottingham river.

PC Gill formed a human chain with his colleagues and managed to save the life of a man who had jumped into the River Trent by pulling him out of the water and prevented him from being swept away.

He has also developed a bespoke search on the force system ‘Niche’ in order for him to identify outstanding suspects in the Gedling area, leading to a number of wanted people being caught and prosecuted.

Neighbourhood Policing Inspector for Gedling Chris Pearson said: “I have been continually impressed by the outstanding commitment to response policing shown by PC Gill.

“Following the documentary, PC Gill is a real role model for the local community and champions the excellent work by response officers carried out across the force on a daily basis. His professionalism has been instrumental in increasing public confidence in the police by explaining the necessary action taken at incidents.

“I have received nothing but positive feedback from local partners and the community who have seen first-hand the quality of policing delivered in the Gedling Borough.

“His work on Niche has allowed him to locate suspects and that work has been nothing short of relentless and he has been responsible for arresting many people for outstanding offences.”

“I am aware that in just over two months PC Gill along with his colleagues at Gedling have been responsible for arresting a large number of people that had been outstanding for offences in the or had failed to attend court.

“PC Gill’s enthusiasm for ‘Operation Scorpion’ has been excellent with him playing a key role in identifying nominals of interest in the Gedling Borough.

“It is this proactive approach that has motivated his younger in service colleagues who strive to deliver an equally excellent service to the public. PC Gill acts as a role model not only to his shift but to the wider organisation and I am extremely grateful for his contribution to policing in Gedling.

“I am extremely proud of PC Gill and his contribution to policing the Gedling area.”

PC Gill said: “I’m very pleased with this achievement which is a great honour, and it was great to celebrate the award with friends and family on the evening.

“I’m very grateful to work for the force and alongside my colleagues. Every day is a fresh challenge, but I’m confident that we can continue to make real strides in the community.”

Arnold care home makes former teacher’s dream come true with visit to old school in West Bridgford

An Arnold care home resident’s dream of revisiting the primary school where she worked for 16 years has now come true.

Janet Marden, who lives at Coppice Lodge, last set foot at her former place of work, Abbey Road Primary School in West Bridgford, in 1988.

She joined the team in 1972 and taught five-year-olds for five years before moving on to teach 10-year-olds in 1977 until she retired. It’s thought she taught almost 500 of Nottingham’s children in total.

After almost 31 years since her last visit, Janet’s trip forms part of Coppice Lodge’s wish tree initiative, where residents can make a special wish and the care team does everything in its power to fulfil it.

During the visit, Janet took a tour of the school, hosted by headteacher Mrs Toom and school secretary Mrs McNeil, whom recalled very fond memories of Janet’s time at the school, thanks to members of the school’s current and former teacher’s lunch club, of which Janet was once a part.

Janet said: “It was fantastic to be back at Abbey Road and it brought some lovely memories flooding back. The school hall hasn’t changed one bit but it’s lovely to see how the school has grown in recent years.

“A big thank you to everyone at Coppice Lodge for making this possible and to Mrs Toom and Mrs McNeil for showing me around.”

Mrs Toom, headteacher at Abbey Road Primary School, said: “It was an absolute pleasure to show Janet around Abbey Road and to witness her joy when seeing young children at work and play. She had so many fond and funny memories and we loved hearing stories about our school from her time here.

Coppice Lodge’s lifestyle manager, Lorna Thornley, said: “It was a real joy to be able to grant Janet’s wish and take her back to the school where she spent so much of her career. It was lovely to see her smiling throughout the visit and remembering some very happy times from years gone by.”

Proud to be rated “good” by the Care Quality Commission, Coppice Lodge is operated by Ideal Carehomes and offers 24 hour residential and dementia care for up to 64 residents on an inclusive fee basis.
