Award nominations open for inspiring Nottinghamshire young people

Nominations are now open for awards recognising inspiring young people across Nottinghamshire.

Nottinghamshire Police’s annual Nxt Gen Awards shine a spotlight on the outstanding achievements of young people from across Nottinghamshire, and nominations are now open.

Parents, guardians, youth workers, teachers, coaches, club leaders, carers, and professionals are being urged to nominate any young person who has made an exceptional contribution to their community and deserves to be celebrated.

The awards, which officially launch today (Thursday, 1 January), are open to anyone aged between nine and 18 who lives or goes to school in Nottinghamshire.

Entering its sixth year, the force’s prestigious evening of celebration has undergone a makeover, having previously been known as the Live Our Best Life Awards.

The Nxt Gen Awards incorporates Nottinghamshire’s recognisable ‘NG’ postcode, with strokes of a green and gold colourway, firmly cementing the county’s civic heritage at the heart of these celebrations.

The move, which involved the input of young people, will better align the force’s efforts to engage with the next generation.

More than 120 people were nominated for the awards in 2025.

Two nominees for each category will be invited to the ceremony at Nottinghamshire Police’s impressive multi-million-pound headquarters for an evening of hospitality and entertainment on Friday, 8 May.

This year’s guests enjoyed performances from circus-style acrobats, fire dancers, and the Nottinghamshire Police band.

Acts are already preparing for 2026, including Inspire Urself Carnival Troupe, who recently performed at the force’s community talent show.

Each category winner and runner-up will receive either a trophy or framed certificate, and a selection of other prizes in recognition of their hard work.

Nominations close at 11.45pm on Sunday, February 1, before a panel of judges shortlists the nominees.

The six public award categories open for nominations are:

  • Lyrico Steede Award – Awarded to a young person who may have been involved in gangs, knife crime or other criminality but has made significant progress to turn their life around and inspired others.
  • Rising Above Adversity Award – Celebrates a young individual who has overcome significant personal or social obstacles and become a beacon of hope for others.
  • Youth Impact Award – For a young person who demonstrates honesty, fairness, and strong moral principles, and who has made an impact on people’s lives.
  • Youth Creative Excellence Award – For young talents who have contributed to the arts and cultural enrichment of their community through singing, dancing, acting or anything creative.
  • Leadership Award – Recognises young people who lead projects, show initiative, and encourage others to do their best, whilst showing reliability.
  • Inspiring Young Minds Award – Recognises acts of courage, whether standing up for what’s right, helping others in danger, or facing personal challenges.

Inspector Paul Peatfield is Nottinghamshire Police’s lead for engagement, which run the awards.

He said: “We are delighted to open our awards to recognise the amazing achievements of young people in 2026.

“Each year we receive so many worthy nominations showcasing the incredible talent of youngsters or those who have overcome adversity – and it is no easy task to shortlist the final nominees.

“Dozens of exceptional young people have been acknowledged since these awards were first launched in 2021.

“At Nottinghamshire Police, we champion the amazing work young people are doing across the county, and it is wonderful each year to hear their personal stories and achievements.

“Working directly with Nottinghamshire’s young people is incredibly important to help us earn their trust and confidence.

“The Nxt Gen Awards are just one way we are strengthening relationships with our communities and working with young people, schools, and colleges to give them a voice and a platform to celebrate their achievements.

Police step up patrols to catch thieves behind spree of vehicle thefts in Gedling

Police have ramped up patrols around Gedling in a bid to catch thieves behind a spree of vehicle thefts in the area.

The Neighbourhood Policing Team has been placing plain clothed officers in the area and tasking them with tracking down the thieves. So far, they have arrested a man, aged 44, on suspicion of a number of vehicle crime offences and have located one of the stolen vehicles.  

Incidents have taken place in Maple Drive, where football boots, kickboxing equipment and Amazon parcels were taken and in Horwood Drive where air pods and a dash camera were stolen.

Other streets targeted included Babbington Crescent and Willow Lane, where a bank card was taken from a car as well as an expensive bottle of perfume.

A number of vehicles were also stolen, including a Mercedes, which was found close to Carlton Road where they arrested a man.

PC Mark Szeremeta, beat manager for Gedling, said: “Throughout December, we have carried out plain clothed patrols to locate those responsible.

“We know that residents in the area were extremely distressed to find their cars broken into or stolen.

“We made it a priority and tasked officers to ensure those responsible were caught.

“For many, their vehicle is their lifeline to take children to school, to go to work, and to enjoy social activities and we were determined to put a stop to this crime spree.

‘They will be brought to justice’: Gedling council leader condemns acts of ‘unacceptable’ vandalism at newly revamped Carlton park

Gedling Borough Council Leader John Clarke MBE has slammed vandals for wrecking a defibrillator, gates to tennis courts and leaving needles near a play area at a Carlton park.

The Council received reports about damage to the defibrillator at Conway Road Recreation Ground on December 18 followed by reports of needles being found near the children’s play area and damage to the tennis court gate.

Councillor John Clarke MBE, Leader of Gedling Borough Council said: “The park is well used by local families and the behaviour of these vandals is unacceptable.  I am deeply disappointed that they have chosen to cause damage to a much-loved public space and to the tennis courts after so much work has gone into making improvements.  

“The Council will not tolerate vandalism of any kind.  We have reported the incident to police and will be collecting CCTV evidence to share with them to ensure that the culprits are brought to justice.”

Prolific thief who targeted Netherfield store faces lengthy wait for sentencing

A prolific thief who targeted a shop in Netherfield will start the new year behind bars.

Christos Iona targeted the Netherfield business along with three others in Beeston, Stapleford and Wollaton between November 10 and December 14.

The shoplifter helped himself to meat products, clothing, alcohol and other items before walking out of the stores without paying.

Iona also burgled Beeston-based student apartments on five separate occasions during his crime spree.

Each of the break-ins at Graduation House, High Road, happened between November 30 and December 6.

Iona helped himself to TVs from four of the flats during his spree, while also stealing a high-value arcade machine from the common room.

Officers managed to catch up with the thief within a few days of that final offence though.

Having looked through the available CCTV footage, police identified Iona as a suspect.

Despite Iona being of no fixed address, officers managed to track him down to a Beeston address, where he was detained on December 18. 

As well as arresting the 27-year-old, police also found and recovered three of the stolen TVs at another address linked to him.

Neighbourhood officers and detectives charged Iona with 13 offences.

The strength of the evidence they’d gathered meant the thief pleaded guilty to each of them when he appeared in court on Saturday (20).

Iona, of no fixed address, now faces a nervous wait to the new year, after being remanded into custody until January 10.

He’ll appear at Nottingham Crown Court to be sentenced for five counts of burglary, seven shop thefts and one count of handling stolen goods.

PC Samantha Gledhill said: “Our neighbourhood officers and burglary team detectives worked together to great effect to build a strong case against Iona.

“It was really pleasing then to see this tenacity pay off, with all that evidence prompting him to plead guilty to 13 separate offences in total.

“He was responsible for burgling the same student accommodation building no less than five separate times.

“Burglary is a horribly invasive crime that can leave people feeling uneasy about where they live – a fact that would’ve been doubly true here, with young students being targeted. 

“When you add his shoplifting spree too, it’s clear Iona has no regard for the law, so it’s good to know he’ll spend the rest of the Christmas period behind bars and be sentenced in the new year.”

Section of Colwick road to close for ten weeks

Part of a Colwick road will be completely closed to vehicles for ten weeks.

Road No. 1 will close from its junction with A612 Colwick Loop Road to its junction with
Road No. 7 from January 5.

The works are taking place to make footway crossing improvements to the Colwick, junction of Private Rd 1 and the A612.

The works intended to improve the way the public can get safely from the beginning of my patch at Toby Carvery, all the way up to Burton Joyce.

The improvements are being carried out by Via East Midlands on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council

Funding for £100k of improvements secured for Arnold play area

A play area in Arnold will soon be improved thanks to fresh funding of £100,000 from FCC Communities Foundation.

The funding bid to revamp Church Lane Park was submitted in partnership with Gedling Borough Council and the Friends of Church Lane Park.

It included consultations with the local community, which highlighted the importance of incorporating inclusive play equipment, meeting the needs of local SEN children.

Works on the park are due to start in May 2026 with the improvements and new facilities expected to be completed by Summer 2026. The existing play area will be closed whilst works are carried out.

The play area refurbishment is the first phase of improvements planned for the park. The Friends of Church Lane Park and the Council are also consulting with young people in the community to identify their preferences for future facilities. Plans for these additional facilities will be developed and delivered as part of phase two.

FCC Communities Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that supports community, conservation and heritage projects through the Landfill Communities Fund. 

Leanne Gilchrist, chair of the Friends of Church Lane Park, said: “The Friends of Church Lane Park are so excited that everyone working together has secured this funding.

“We can’t wait to see the park functioning again.”

Councillor Viv McCrossen, Portfolio Holder for Climate Change and Natural Habitat said: This play area is already a much-loved space, but we want it to be the very best it can be. These improvements will make a real lasting difference for the local community and everyone who enjoys visiting the park.”

Councillor Michael Payne, MP for Gedling, said: “I’m proud to have helped kick-start the push for this much-needed funding and to have supported the bid from the outset.

“This investment will provide a wonderful play park for children and families in and around Redhill and Arnold.

‘BE PREPARED’: Flood alerts in place across Gedling borough following heavy rain

A flood alert is in place for Gedling borough communities near the River Trent – with ‘most at risk’.

Flooding is possible from this morning (December 19), said the Environment Agency.

They said ‘flooding was expected to continue’.

The Agency said Stoke Bardolph was the community most likely to be affected by flooding going forward.

No further significant rainfall is forecast.

An EA spokesman said: “We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are patrolling watercourses in the area and liaising with emergency services.

“Please avoid using low-lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid low-lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded.

An update is expected from the Environment Agency at 12pm today (9) or unless the situation changes.

Levels will remain high throughout the weekend.
