Lack of funding could hinder future tram route extension to Gedling

The chairman of an influential city transport committee has revealed a lack of funding could prevent a future tram route being created to Gedling.

Cllr Dave Liversage, who is newly appointed chairman the Greater Nottingham Light Rapid Transit Advisory Committee, yesterday gave an update to members on how he thinks a £200,000 study into future tram routes across the city was progressing.

Extended lines have been proposed to Gedling, Ruddington, Toton and Kimberley.

Cllr Liversage told the meeting he thought the scheme most likely to happen was the one to extend the line past Clifton South. It is hoped this would link up to the 3,000 houses which are set to be built on Fairham Pastures, near Ruddington.

He said: “I don’t know what’s going to happen with them [the routes]. My guess, and it would only be a guess, is that the Phoenix to Kimberley won’t work, it won’t happen. The extension into Ruddington (Fairham Pastures) will probably work sometime, and eventually if we actually get HS2 it (the tram) will get to Toton.

“In terms of the Gedling one, I think it will be to do with whether there’s any finance available, but I think a lot of people will be interested with how it actually gets out of the station and turns Eastward.”

He added: “The work is going on, and I’m sure during that process there’s going to be some sort of consultation process on all this.

The Greater Nottingham Light Rapid Transit Advisory Committee which is headed by Cllr Liversage brings together experts from NET, the county and city councils, sustainable transport organisations, and cycling campaign group Pedals.

At their meeting at Loxley House yesterday, it was also revealed that there was a sharp increase in the number of people using the tram this year compared to the year before.

According to NET, 17.8 million passengers were carried on the tram system in the period from April 2017 to March 2018.

This was an increase of 8.4 percent compared to the previous year.

NET also reported reliability and punctuality during the six month period from March to the end of July were high, with levels of 98.5 percent and 95.7 percent respectively.

This was despite the severe weather conditions that were experienced from the Beast in the East in March, NET bosses said.

I think this is really neded to help revitalise the high street in Netherfield and other areas Have you seen the town? It’s dying on it’s a**e. More footfall is badly needed and Gedling BC are doing nothing to help. More interested in a Saisnbury’s that still hasn’t happened.

Netherfield died a long time ago and i don’t want my money used to prop it up. if peopel wanted to shop there they would but instead they just want to gambel, vape and use the co-op. they have what they need so just let everything else go
