A council-run programme helping Gedling borough residents living with long-term health conditions to become more active has been shortlisted for a major national fitness award.
Gedling Borough Council’s Gedling Health programme has been named as a finalist in the Gym Innovation of the Year category at this year’s National Fitness Awards.
The scheme, delivered by Gedling Leisure, provides specialist exercise support for adults living with long-term health conditions.
Participants receive tailored guidance and access to supervised exercise sessions designed to help them improve their fitness, become more confident being active and develop healthier lifestyles.
The National Fitness Awards celebrate achievements by gyms, leisure facilities and fitness programmes from across the UK, with finalists this year coming from as far afield as Aberdeen and Cornwall.
Gedling Health will now progress to the next stage of judging, which could include a visit from an awards judge as well as the submission of further information about the programme and its work in the community.
An independent judging panel will then decide this year’s winners.
Councillor Henry Wheeler, Portfolio Holder for Lifestyles, Health and Wellbeing at Gedling Borough Council, said: “We are incredibly proud that Gedling Health has been named a finalist in the National Fitness Awards.
“To be recognised alongside some of the very best fitness and wellbeing programmes in the country is a fantastic achievement and reflects the dedication and passion of everyone involved in delivering the scheme.
“Gedling Health makes a real difference to residents’ lives by helping people become more active, improve their health and manage long-term conditions with confidence.
“Reaching the national finals is well-deserved recognition of the positive impact the programme continues to have across our borough, and we wish the team the very best of luck in the next stage of the competition.”
The winners are due to be announced at a black-tie ceremony at The Athena in Leicester on Friday, November 27, hosted by Olympic medallist and fitness expert Gail Emms.
National Fitness Awards event director Mike Hewitt said this year’s competition had attracted a record number of entries.
He said: “We have had a record number of entries this year, with the standard across the board being excellent – a true testament to the innovation and strength of the vibrant UK fitness industry.
“Getting on a shortlist has been more difficult than ever this year and it’s a huge achievement for all those that have made the finals – truly the elite of the fitness world.”
