Cost of living: Aldi lowers cost of fruit and veg and Morrisons price matches discount retailers on more than 200 products

The cost of living crisis seems as though it has lasted an age. Although inflation has eased in recent months, people have faced prices rising at rates not seen in decades while their wages have not kept up. This has left them struggling with debt and sacrificing the essentials.

Now each week we’ll be helping people in the borough balance their budgets by bringing together stories from across the local retail world that will help shoppers save cash…

Aldi lowers prices of fruit and veg products

Aldi has lowered prices across a range of its fruit and vegetable products to make “healthy and varied diets affordable for all”.

Items in the price drop include berries, grapes, tomatoes, onions, shallots, chestnut mushrooms, carrots, apples, oranges and ready-to-eat salads.

The discount giant has stores in Daybrook, Mapperley and Teal Park

It marks the biggest round of cuts that Aldi has announced this year so far representing around a quarter of the discounter’s produce range, with more than 50 products falling in price by an average of 7%.

It comes as recent research by the discounter found that the average UK adult only eats their five-a-day four times a week.

Aldi managing director of buying Julie Ashfield said: “This year we’re aiming to cut more prices than ever before – helping our customers access the lowest prices possible.”

The discounter held its position as the UK’s cheapest supermarket this month, as consumer watchdog Which? found that a 72-item basket cost £129.24 at Aldi – over £40 less than Waitrose.

Morrisons to price match Aldi and Lidl on more than 200 products

From today (19), the supermarket giant will introduce signage in its stores and online to showcase which items are price-matched to the discounters.

Over 200 products will feature in the campaign including cupboard staples such as cornflakes, canned tomatoes, rice, bread and baby wipes, as well as household cleaning items such as anti-bac spray, bleach and toilet rolls.

Morrisons said they will be checking prices twice per week and will adjust them if needed.

Morrisons chief customer and marketing officer Rachel Eyre said: “We want to reassure our customers that we have hundreds of products that are the same price or cheaper – with the quality they’ve come to expect from us – than those available at Aldi and Lidl which is why we have launched our new price match.

“We hope this new campaign will bring our quality and value into even sharper focus for our customers.”

It also comes as Asda became the first supermarket to price match both Aldi and Lidl in January across 287 everyday grocery products.
