Arnold Town Ladies put in brave performance against in-form Long Eaton side

Earlier in the season, Arnold Town Ladies played through extra time against Mansfield Hosiery Mills with only 10 players and were unlucky to lose 2-0 after the 120 minutes. As proud the team were with the performance,  it was against a lower league club. Today the side found themselves in the same position before kick-off due to last minute pull outs but this time had the task of facing Long Eaton Ladies who were unbeaten so far this season winning 7 of their 8 matches.

Whilst a lot of sides would have used this as an excuse it was refreshing to not hear any negativity from the players and it was clear they were going to use the anger of only having 10 available to our advantage.

Straight from kick-off Arnold got stuck in, giving their hosts little time to settle on the ball and pushing them back into their half when ever they could. With players missing Andy Ingle was forced into changing the formation but having the same back five was pivotal to the performance today. Having Chay Davey leading the line with the reliable Charley Norman, Claire Potter and Tina Potter takes off a lot of pressure not only on goalkeeper Emily Hallam but also the rest of the side. They mopped up everything thrown at them and limited the dangerous Long Eaton forwards from the off.

The first flash point saw Chloe Jordan foul the Long Eaton left back, only for her to retaliate and probably should have been sent off for her attack on the Arnold Youngster. However the referee saw it differently and punished them both with yellow cards. Once it settled down again player of the match Jen Lorimer took control of the midfield along side Elli Leathen and Chloe Jordan and their tenacious approach provided sniffs at goal for Natasha Leach and Molly Parker.

Whilst the tempo of the game continued at the high level it was the home side that had the first and decisive attempt at goal. Precious Hamilton showed why she has such a big reputation as she ran through the offside trap before cooly slotting the ball home for 1-0.

It was nice to see that none of the Arnold heads dropped and they carried on as before and although Long Eaton rattled the cross bar, they were still limiting the chances. Emily Hallam again taking the pressure of the side with a number of confident catches from corners as well as dominating her area brilliantly.

The second half was one where most would have expected the visitors to tire due to the industrial effort of the first half, and the potential league leaders to push for more goals. However this was never the case, as although Long Eaton saw a lot more of the ball, it wasn’t till the 75th minute that they really threatened as they hit the woodwork again. Arnold created five chances in the second 45 minutes but all from the edge of the area, the best coming from Natasha Leach who was well set up by Molly Parker, and who’s shot was well blocked by the last ditch tackle from the home sides centre back.

Cramp was becoming an issue and the back four certainly seemed to suffer more and at one point saw the team go down to nine players as Tina Potter recieved treatment on the sideline. For the effort put in 1-0 would have been a real shock scoreline considering the circumstances but they were unable to hold out and in the 85th minute, a shot from the edge of the area found the far corner of the net for 2-0.

Overall the players can all be extremly proud of themselves as no one could have given any more. Hopefully a few players will be coming in or back to fitness in the next couple of weeks, but the core of the team are a group of players that are clearly hungry to take this club places and long may that continue!!

Team: Hallam, Potter C, Potter T, Davey, Norman, Lorimer, Leathen, Jordan, Leach, Parker

The Ladies second team came from 1-0 down away at Sherwood to win 2-1 with 81 and 83 minute goals from Hannah Hughes returning the side to the top of the league.

The Under 18’s lost 4-0 away at Cosby and the Under 16’s were beaten at Eagle Valley 1-5 by Calverton MW Colts U16.

NEW SPONSOR: Former super-middleweight World Champion Carl Froch MBE has opened the new Motorpoint Arena Nottingham

Gedling borough’s very own former super-middleweight World Champion Carl Froch MBE was invited to officially open the new Motorpoint Arena Nottingham on Monday.

The four times WBC, WBA and IBF title winner returned to the scene of his legendary title defence against Lucian Bute to help celebrate the seven figure investment by Motorpoint over the next five years in the East Midlands’ premier entertainment venue.

Motorpoint, the UK’s leading car supermarket, took the naming rights for the Arena as part of an on-going drive to increase its brand awareness across the region.  As part of the agreement, a dramatic re-brand of the building in the heart of Nottingham city centre has taken place throughout January, including the installation of high-profile outdoor LED signage on Bellar Gate, Bolero Square and Lower Parliament Street. The partnership also means the Motorpoint logo is featured on all concert tickets, concert advertising and social media channels together with the launch of a brand new responsive website – www.motorpointarenanottingham.com.

The hugely popular 10,000 capacity Arena, which first opened its doors in 2000, is a multi-use indoor arena located within the National Ice Centre complex. It has attracted artists such as Beyoncé, Kasabian, Katy Perry, Lady Ga Ga, Metallica, One Direction, The Killers and The Who among others in recent years.

Geoff Huckstep, Chief Executive of the Motorpoint Arena Nottingham, said: “We are delighted to be working with such a dynamic company as Motorpoint. We are both passionate about our products and believe in delivering quality, service and value in equal measure. The launch of our naming rights agreement today will definitely help the Arena to continue to be at the centre of the East Midlands’ live entertainment market.”

David Shelton, Founder of Motorpoint, added: “The new Motorpoint Arena Nottingham will form the centre-piece of our plans to raise our profile in the region as we look to further establish ourselves as the UK’s largest independent car retailer underpinned by an award-winning level of choice, value and service. We are also equally looking forward to working with the team at the Arena over the next five years to deliver an unrivalled experience for the 700,000 plus people that come through its doors every year.”

One of the Sunday Times Top 100 Companies to Work For in 2015, Motorpoint already has considerable experience of developing successful naming rights partnerships with Arena’s in Cardiff and Sheffield. Its agreement with the Sheffield Arena ended July 2015.

Car cruising ban at Netherfield retail park hailed a success

A ban stopping boy racers from car cruising at a Netherfield retail park has been hailed as a success.

Police say they haven’t received a single complaint from the public about racing at Victoria Retail Park in the last 12 months since the injunction was introduced.

The order prevents drivers from racing, riding in convoy, driving at excessive speed and drifting (driving sideways around traffic islands) at the site. It was introduced after complaints from residents about car cruising meetings at the retail park which were attracting over 200 vehicles on Sunday nights.

Injunctions are also currently in force at Chilwell Retail Park and the area surrounding junction 27 of the M1.

Sergeant Simon Scales, from Nottinghamshire Police, said he was delighted by the impact the ban was having.

He said: “There have been no complaints from the public. These powers are working very well but it is still well worth reminding everyone these powers are in place to deter similar activity.”

Councillor Alice Grice, Vice-Chair of the Community Safety Committee at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “People who behave and drive recklessly in these locations in the future should be left in no doubt they face the genuine possibility of a prison sentence if they continue to behave in a way which is dangerous, intimidating and distressing to local people and road users.”

On a mission and with binoculars in hand, children at a day nursery in Lowdham were thrilled to take part in the annual Big School’s Birdwatch organised by RSPB.

Children from Alphabet House Day Nursery Lowdham on Gunthorpe Road counted as many birds as they possibly could within an hour and made a note of what they saw, contributing to the world’s biggest schools wildlife survey. This is part of The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds’ campaign to bring children closer to nature.

nursery manager at Alphabet House Day Nursery’s manager Kelly Bell said: “The children absolutely love being outdoors and spending time in our allotment so taking part in the Big School’s Birdwatch was the perfect fit for us! They were thrilled to show off their observation talents and spotted a range of birds around the nursery.

“At Alphabet House, we encourage outdoor activities an enriching part of the learning process because of the way it promotes observation and social skills, as well as fostering a relationship between our children and the natural world.”

The RSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch is now in its 15th year and the survey helps to track numbers of birds on school grounds, offering insight to conservationists as to which species are doing well. Additionally, children learn a great deal about the natural environment and the animals within it.
