November train update from Tony Cave

Tony Cave is Gedling Eye’s resident train expert and also has adopted our local stations in Carlton and Netherfield. Each month he provides an update on our local train services…

SATURDAY TIMETABLE CHANGES AT CARLTON

From December 2016 the Saturday timetable at Carlton will be improved to give the station an hourly service between Newark and Matlock like in the week. This does mean the station will lose the daytime direct trains to and from Lincoln. However there is a good chance that there will be a train mid-morning to Lincoln and 10.30am seems to be the favoured time by those who use the service. The other option is 9.30am so let East Midlands Trains know what time you prefer. It is alos hoped Carlton will have trains call on Saturday evenings.

EXTRA TRAIN AT CARLTON FROM DECEMBER 14

The 16.34 Lincoln to Leicester train will call additionally at Carlton from 17.23 on Mondays to Fridays, the same as it already does on a Saturday.

PASSENGER INCREASE AT CARLTON STATION

It is now six months since we gained the hourly weekday service at Carlton station and numbers using the trains has steadily increased. The 08.08am service to Matlock is a popular train and on Monday, October 12, a record 29 passengers joined at Carlton. The 08.24 on the old timetable only averaged around 10 joining each day. From what I hear, evening services are also well used, but daytime passengers to Newark and Lincoln don’t seem to have increased much.

NETHERFIELD STATION UPDATE

Did you know you could get to the station on Chaworth Road? Not many people do. They also don’t seem to know that in a morning you can get a train direct to Liverpool. There is currently a campaign at Radcliffe-on-Trent to have an improved service from that station, and this has inspired a person locally who works in Radcliffe to start a campaign for extra trains at Netherfield.

Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire County Councils are also keen to have more trains at both stations. I have spoken to many people who said they would use the service if it was provided. After all, four minutes between the two stations compares favourably with up to 90 minutes by bus via Nottingham. Even by car at peak times it can take a long time. I’ll let you know in this column when the campaign is up and running.

LINCOLN CHRISTMAS MARKETS

From December 3 to 6 extra trains will run direct from Carlton. Friday 4 at 09.58, 12.00 extended to Lincoln and 15.27pm. Extra return services leave Lincoln at 14.07 and 16.22. The usual service gives plenty of evening trains. On Saturday 5 there will be extra trains from Carlton to Lincoln at 09.14am, 11.14am, and 13.56pm. Extra returns ervices depart Lincoln at 14.56pm, 17.11pm and 19.00pm, which is the last train to Carlton. There will also be extra trains from Nottingham which will run to Lincoln non-stop and usually will run in front of the local train services.

CHRISTMAS and NEW YEAR TRAIN ARRANGEMENTS

Local services will wind down from around 19.00pm on Christmas Eve and there are no trains on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. Normal services resume on Sunday, December 27 with a weekly service from Monday, December 28 until Friday, Nauray 1 inclusive. Trains will run every hour on New Year’s Day when buses do not normally operate. Off Peak fares will be available all day long and also between Christmas and New Year companies have special offers, so it’s worth checking out their websites.

Bestwood school pupils treated to meal with real Robin Hood

Robin Hood swapped his crossbow for cutlery yesterday to join pupils at a Bestwood school for a lunch being held in his honour.

The Robin Hood School in Bestwood Park organised the Robin Hood-themed lunch as part of National School Meals Week which celebrates the hard work of school catering teams across the country.

During the meal Tim Pollard, Nottingham’s official Robin Hood, shared stories with pupils between courses and also met catering staff who worked hard to prepare the celebratory lunch.

Nottingham City Council, who organised the event, has been working in conjunction with The Soil Association’s Food for Life Programme to make schools and families aware of the importance of school meals across the city.

Local Food for Life Programme Manager Kate Shaw said: “It has been extremely encouraging to work with Nottingham City Council during National School Meals Week to promote school meals and the important role that they play in schools across the city.”

Councillor Nicola Heaton, Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: “The quality and source of food in our school meals is very important to us, and working with Food for Life provides us with the support to deliver the highest standards in our schools. We are looking forward to working with them further to achieve the Silver Catering Mark in our schools by the end of this year.”

ONE of the area’s best known restaurants is to hold a VIP night to give locals their first glimpse of its exciting new interior and facilities.

Oscar’s Lounge and Kitchen in Calverton will also be launching a new winter menu which offers diners an array of locally sourced produce and fine-dining twists

General manager at Oscar’s Louis Bahia said: “We are very excited to launch our new winter menu and showcase our fresh, locally sourced creations which are all fantastic value for money.

“Our resident chefs have worked closely with local businesses to design the new menu. We believe that by combining honest, homely food, alongside great value, we are onto a winner with the locals.

The VIP launch, which takes place next Thursday (12), will also allow guests to take a sneak peek at the venue’s new contemporary Garden Suite function room which can accommodate up to 150 guests for weddings, private parties and corporate events.

Arnold builders complete £7m revamp of historical Derbyshire mill

An Arnold building firm were today celebrating the completion of a £7m project to convert a derelict Derbyshire mill into luxury apartments.

DL Rhodes and Son were selected by Nottingham-based ALB Investments to transform Victoria Mill in Draycott into 73 luxury one and two-bedroomed apartments.

The work has now been completed ahead of schedule and all the flats have already been reserved for sale.

Managing director Nigel Rhodes said that the mill is one of Erewash’s most important and historic buildings with a history of being one of the most important lace factories in the world.

He said: “We are delighted with how successful the project has been. From day one we have tried to build a relationship with the local residents and we have always been welcomed with open arms.

“We truly believe that this regeneration will be fantastic for local residents, shops and business owners by bringing more footfall to the area. The project has had a positive response from the local community.”

The two firms held a launch event this morning to celebrate and invited over 80 property and construction professionals from across the region to join them.

ALB managing director Arran Bailey said: “The ‘Builders Breakfast’ seemed like a far more fitting opening party than a champagne and canapé filled evening, it meant we could thank everyone who assisted with the project personally and gave everyone a chance to have a look at the completed project.”

For the second time this season there was a cup upset down at the Bill Stokeld Stadium. This time in favour of Carlton as they overcame Premier Division strugglers Stamford. A late Kieran Walker header was enough to send the Millers into the hat for Monday’s Second Qualifying Round draw.

Carlton took the lead through Anthony Howell, who headed home from the back post. However, just after the break Conor Green placed an impressive header into the corner of the net, unfortunately for the centre back, it was in his own goal. Then just as it seemed a Tuesday night replay was on the cards, Walker decided to put an end to that and sent a bullet header into the back of Richard Knight’s net.

The hosts set out from the start a tempo that was unable to let Stamford settle into the game. A Daniel Gordon free kick forced Knight into a good save in the top left corner of the goal after Romello Nangle was dragged back by Dominic McParr.

Inside ten minutes it seemed Carlton had broke the deadlock as Knight fumbled the ball from a corner, which after bouncing around, was tapped in by Daniel Fletcher, but he was adjudged to have been offside when Josh Rae played the ball to him.

Gordon was then involved in a run down the flank, and after skinning Ellis Myles, he cut inside but his shot rippled into the side netting.

The visitors were also presented with a close chance as McParr met a corner, seeming to be going goal bound; it took a wicked deflection sending it wide of the target.

Gordon seemed to be involved in just about everything for Carlton, and continued to cause more problems down the other end as he tried an effort from distance that went just wide of the post.

When  Josh Rae was brought down in a wide left position, Gordon grabbed a vital assist; his free kick was crossed into the box and skipper Anthony Howell leaped up above everyone else and headed the ball into the back of the net.

Just before the break, Gordon had a great chance to double the Millers lead as Conor Green played a fabulous through ball to the left sided player, but when through one-on-one, Gordon was unable to control the ball, and his effort went wide of the target.

After the break Carlton struggled to get going and were caught napping when Jordan Smith whipped in a cross that Green went to head clear, but instead looped into the top corner of their own net, gifting the visitors a way back into the game.

Carlton then stepped up the tempo again, but were limited to clear cut opportunities, with Tom McConway coming close with a shot that looked menacing but was deflected wide of the target. Afew minutes later Kieran Walker had a header down at the near post tipped past the post by Knight for a corner.

The visitors themselves also looked to grab the winner and Smith almost turned from supplier to scorer hen his shot went just wide of the target.

Itwas Carlton who continued to look the most threatening and Rae forced Knight into a cracking save as the midfielder turned his player and blasted the ball at goal, but the Stamford keeper turned the ball behind for a corner. It was from that resulting corner where the goal came from, as Jake Wholey sent the ball into the box, Walker rose and this time his header went straight past Knight and rippled the back of the net.

With the Millers seeing the game out, they now progress to the Second Qualifying Round, for only the second time in the clubs history. There will be keen eyes on the draw that takes place on Monday.

ARNOLD TOWN Ladies only just managed to get a full team out for their tough away match at Kettering .

With only 10 players available on Friday night, the management had their work cut out trying to raise a team.  They did eventually manage to convince one player to back out of other commitments and another to travel through the night from university in order to be able to put out a full side.

For once, Arnold managed to not conceded within the first 20 minutes and continued to look threatening on the counter attack. However, the game changed with a long pass over the top of the Arnold defence which was then finished superbly by Kettering’s number 10 to give the home side the lead. Amazingly this caused heads to drop and work rates soon followed.

Arnold dont often go into half-time only one goal behind, but the players looked as though they were 10 goals down as they trudged back to the changing room.

A chance to turn the game around soon materialised five minutes into the second half when captain Jen Lorimer was bundled over in the box;  the ref pointed straight to the penalty spot. It wasn’t to be however as Jen brushed herself down but was unable to beat the keeper who made the save diving to her left.

This knocked the stuffing out of the visiting side and allowed the hosts to gain in confidence, have more time on the ball and start to become more dangerous in the final third. Elli Leathen had to be replaced following a strong challenge which saw the Kettering player booked and replaced by Ellis Marchant. The game was finally all over when a corner wasn’t fully cleared and the ball tricked in at the front post to double the lead.

Chloe Jordan still had a great chance to half the deficit when she powered through the home defence only to see her effort well saved and then cleared off the line.

Player of the match was easlily Molly Parker for her constant running and never say die attitude. Special mentions to Chloe Jordon for her time today when she had important deadlines to reach and for Jess Adcock for traveling to and from High Wycombe University at short notice to help us out.

Arnold Town second team travelled to the Norman Archer Memorial ground to face Clifton Ladies in the league cup. Having won their last four matches, confidence should have been high going into this game even though Clifton are the only side to have beaten them so far this season. It wasn’t to be however as the home side recorded a comfortable 5-1 win.

There was cup action for the under 16’s and under 18’s at Eagle Valley but neither team were able to overcome their opponents. The under 16’s losing 3-1 to Wollaton Hall and the under 18’s losing 5-2 to Nottingham Fores

Police appeal for witnesses to Arnold assault

POLICE have launched an appeal for witnesses following an assault in Arnold last month.

Officers were called to Ashdale Road after a man entered one of the properties through a back garden at around 6pm on Wednesday, October 7.

When another man confronted him, the offender assaulted him before running off.

The offender is described as male, in his mid-20s and of an athletic build. He has dark hair and was dressed in dark clothing.

Anyone with any information should contact the police and quote the incident number 653 of 7 October.

The ladies of Netherfield & District Women’s Institute brought a touch of glamour to St George’s Centre in Netherfield where they held a fashion show to help fund their annual trip.

The volunteer models took to the catwalk in the latest autumn and winter fashions, which was just the thing to cheer up the audience as the nights draw in.

The successful event raised over £550 for the group which will help pay for their annual educational group trip. This year members were treated to a trip to Harrogate Flower Show.

Sharon Ellis, who is president of the group said: “Our models were doctors, occupational therapists a teacher and nurses, so as you can see we are a mixed group.”

The group meet on the third Wednesday of each month at St George’s Centre in Netherfield, and are always on the lookout for new members.

Calverton man charged with city burglaries

A Calverton man has been remanded in custody after being charged with a series of burglaries in the city centre.

Peter Boyd, 28, of Coggan Walk in Calverton, has been charged with two aggrevated burglaries and two burglaries.

The burglaries are alleged to have taken place at businesses in Ilkeston and Alfreton Road on 28 October and 6 October 2015.

Colwick packaging firm establish new state-of-the-art factory in Sri Lanka

A Colwick-based packaging firm is investing over $3m (£2m) in a new state-of-the-art factory in Sri Lanka to expand its manufacturing capabilities offshore.

The Wilkins Group – who have their head office on Colwick Industrial Estate – bought the land overseas back in 2013. Work began on the two-acre site at the back end of last year.

The firm has been present in Sri Lanka for the past 15 years and they now have a team over there with an experienced skill-set in the garment and general packaging industry. Before the completion of this new factory, the operation has been run from a rented facility in Colombo.

“Having emerged from a three-decade long conflict, Sri Lanka is now experiencing a massive resurgence in economic activity on all fronts,” said chairman and managing director, André Wilkins.

“As major infrastructure projects are put into place, the country is posed to welcome new investors to take economic activity to the next level. This building will house state-of-the-art machinery to produce innovative retail-packaging solutions.”

The Wilkins Group has one of the largest independent packaging factories in the UK with the group headquarters in Colwick. Last year the firm’s turnover topped £33M.

Sales and marketing director, Justin Wilkins said: “The future is very exciting for’ The Wilkins Group’. And for over half a century in family ownership are industry leaders in our field.

“It won’t be too long before we are investing further and diversifying to offer even more additional services to customers.”
