Asda becomes first supermarket to publish daily local fuel prices online in UK

Asda has now become the first supermarket in the UK to publish their local fuel prices online. ‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The latest move comes after MPs voiced concerns over the soaring fuel prices in recent months. ‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Fuel prices at each of Asda’s filling stations, including Arnold, will be available on the Asda Store Locator pages at 10.30 am. They will show the previous day’s closing price. ‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The supermarket is also developing a system to provide real-time pricing and expects it to be ready in the coming months. ‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

An Asda spokesperson stated, “Asda is proud to be the price leader in fuel. By sharing our prices online, customers will be able to find the best value at the pumps before they get in the car.” ‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

While Asda’s move is seen as a positive step towards transparency, some have voiced concerns that this alone won’t create real competition in the industry. ‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Simon Williams, the RAC fuel spokesman, commented on the development, saying, “While it’s good to see supermarkets start to publish their pump prices, we don’t believe displaying them on websites will make retailers start charging fairer prices.” ‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Williams further emphasised the need for an official price monitoring body. This body would have the power to fine companies, ensuring that they properly reflect significant downward changes in wholesale market prices. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has recommended this. ‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Asda’s initiative also includes working with the UK Government to develop an industry-wide fuel finder scheme. ‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

This collaboration highlights the growing need for transparency in fuel pricing. It is especially important considering the notable difference in fuel costs across regions, such as Northern Ireland where fuel is more than 4p a litre cheaper than the rest of the UK. ‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
