Police are warning elderly residents to be on their guard after a pensioner in Porchester was scammed out of thousands of pounds by bogus workmen.

The group convinced the pensioner that she needed work doing on her property and then made sure she paid upfront in cash for the work.

Police are currently investigating the incident but are now warning residents in the area not to engage with ‘cold callers’

“If they need work doing it’s always best to get it done by approved trades people either by finding them on approved websites or by getting people who are recommended by friends and family.

Environment Agency issue domestic heating oil tank reminder

0

The Environment Agency is urging peope in Gedling borough with domestic heating oil tanks to check it’s in a good state of repair before getting fuel delivered for the winter.

Leaks and spills from a domestic heating tank can be difficult and expensive to clean up; leaked oil can end up in groundwater supplies and drains, many of which lead directly into rivers, streams, lakes and even garden ponds.

If oil does get into drains it could pollute watercourses; harming livestock, wildlife and plants. Our vital drinking water can also come from the same surface and groundwater supplies so protection is important.

Oil is poisonous to fish, other wildlife and smothers plants – just two litres of oil could seriously pollute the volume of fresh water needed to fill an Olympic-size swimming pool.

Paul Reeves, Environment Officer at the Environment Agency said: “Heating oil can cause serious problems if it gets into the water environment.

“The clean-up costs could be tens of thousands of pounds; and these costs fall to the owner of the leaking tank. These costs are not always covered by household insurance policies. A serious case of land contamination from a leaking oil tank could also severely affect the value of property in the area.

“This is why it’s vital that oil is only ever stored in tanks that are in good condition. Both the tank and its pipe work should be regularly inspected and people should never buy more oil than they can safely store.

“If anyone does find a spill, please contact us straight away so that we can reduce the impact on the environment.”

To report an oil spill people should contact the Environment Agency’s 24-hour incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60.

A group of travellers who had set up camp on an Arnold park have now been forced off the site by flood water.

Gedling Borough Council told followers off their Facebook group that the storm and torrential rain on Tuesday evening had caused flooding at Thackeray’s Lane Recreation Ground.

The group moved onto the site last Friday afternoon (8) and the council immediately took action to have them removed, serving an eviction notice on the group that same afternoon.

Now they have vacated the park, Gedling Borough Council announced in a Facebook post that the clean-up operation will now begin

A spokesman said: “As you can see [in the photos] , the area has been left in a terrible state and will take time to clean up. We appreciate your patience as we begin the clean up operation.”

Following a number of incidents involving travellers in the borough over the summer, local MP Vernon Coaker has now called on the government to look at changing existing legislation.

He said: “Last Thursday I stood up in the House to demand we have an urgent debate on Travellers. Here in Gedling, there have been a number of incidents throughout the summer, and whilst both our police and Gedling Borough Council have worked hard to resolve the issue, it is clear to see we need a greater change.

We must adapt our existing legislation so that both in our constituency and around the country, these reoccurring issues cease to exist. This will be done by focusing on the long-term goal, and a system that allows everyone to enjoy their community and a peaceful resolution for all.

Notts shop and apartment could be yours for price of £10 raffle ticket

0

A couple from Carlton are to give an apartment and shop in Nottinghamshire away as a raffle prize – which will provide the winner with a possible pension for life and they won’t even have a mortgage to pay.

Couple Annamarie Garmston and Nathan Lee will raffle off the two-bedroomed flat and tattoo shop, valued at £125,000, through their online venture Raffs2Riches.co.uk.

This is the first time a property in Nottingham has been offered as a raffle prize and it could give someone an income of £9,600 a year.

The winner will have the opportunity to live in the flat in Kirkby-in-Ashfield and rent out the shop, meaning that not only could it be the chance for someone to get a foot on the property ladder, but they will also have a monthly income which could act as a pension pot – all for the price of a £10 ticket.

Annamarie, said: “Today’s current housing market is proving difficult for young people to get a foot on the ladder and with growing concern over pensions this could be an ideal quick fix for the lucky winner.”

Nathan and Annamarie, who have three children including a six-month-old son, launched their own business Raffs2Riches.co.uk to make a better life for their family. The concept is that people buy a raffle ticket for a chance of winning a big prize, with other prizes including Rolex watches.

To be in with a chance of winning, people can buy a ticket on the Raffs2Riches website through the mega raffle game. Tickets will be drawn by automated tom bowler style software to decide on the winner. The first 1,000 people to like and share the competition on Facebook will be entered into a draw to win a Rolex watch.

Nathan said: “When we were younger and growing up in Carlton many people used this idea to raise money for charity, raffling off a watch or smaller items. We decided we could make a business from this and raffs2riches.co.uk was born.

“It will give first time buyers the chance to get onto the property ladder for the small amount it will cost for a ticket.”

The business has received the backing from celebrities including Randy Coutor of UFC and The Expendables movies fame, WWE star Shelly Martinez and Mike Hassani, from TOWIE.

Volunteers announce plans to bring back Gedling Gala

0

A team of volunteers in Gedling are calling on the local community to back their bid to get a popular event back on the calendar.

The annual Gedling Village Family Gala last took place back in 2016 and hundreds of families from across the borough would descend on Willow Park to enjoy the large selection of stalls,

But following the retirement of the committee that organised the event and a lack of success in finding replacements, the Gala was cancelled this summer for the first time in its forty year history.

Now a small team of volunteers are hoping the local community will show their support and join a new group looking to stage the event next year.

To get things moving, an AGM is taking place next Monday (September 18) and those interested in lending a hand with next year’s event are invited to attend.

The AGM will take place at Gedling Memorial Hall at 7.30pm

Rick Wilson, who is chairing the new Gedling Village Family gala, hopes people in the local community will come along to show their support.

He told Gedling Eye: “We want people to come along with their ideas and see what can be done.

“A new organising group needs to be established with help from the last committee and to try a different format. Funding is already available to get things moving.

“All the old Gala contacts for stalls, amusements and performers are available – so come on and give it a go”

eBay users in Gedling borough are being warned not to open a new scam email scam that will lock your computer’s files and then demand you hand over money to get back access.

The email, which is designed to look similar to an eBay receipt email, tells users that they’ve spent a hefty amount of money on the auction site and that they should pay the invoice via a download link.

However, when you click on the link, rather than an invoice downloading to your computer, it will be a product called ‘Locky Ransomware’

This downloaded virus will then scramble and rename all of your files before prompting you to spend money on a decryption key to fix the problem.

Mental health trust opens new ward in Arnold

0

A new ward has opened in Arnold this week which will help reduce the number of mental health patients sent out of the area for treatment.

Nottinghamshire Healthcare have set up the new 16-bed ward at Calverton Hill to allow families, friends and carers to have easier access when visiting their loved ones, ensuring their participation in their care and recovery.

The Trust took control of Bestwood Ward at the Calverton Hill facility on August 1 and the official opening was held this week after refurbishment work was completed.

Calverton Hill, in Arnold, is a medium secure unit for adults with mental illness or personality disorders.

The beds have been subcontracted to the Trust from Priory Healthcare and Partnerships in Care, in a two year-deal and will be used by adults requiring inpatient mental health treatment. This new partnership will ensure that more patients can receive inpatient care locally, supported by our community services.

Ruth Hawkins, Chief Executive at Nottinghamshire Healthcare said: “The demand for adult mental health beds has been increasing and we wanted to be able to provide more care for people closer to home. This new ward provides an opportunity for us to do that, ultimately benefitting patients and their families.

Dr Sylvia Tang, CEO of Priory Healthcare and Partnerships in Care, said: “As a leading provider of behavioural mental healthcare, we are very pleased to be working alongside Nottinghamshire Healthcare in helping provide this important facility for the local community.

“It makes absolute sense that patients are treated near to their homes and their loved ones, and, where we can work with forward-looking Trusts like Nottinghamshire Healthcare to achieve this, we are delighted to do so.”
