Digital makeover for McDonald’s restaurant at Netherfield

3

Queuing to order a Big Mac will now be a thing of the past for customers at a McDonald’s restaurant in Netherfield following the arrival of new state-of-the-art self-order kiosks.

The restaurant, based at Victoria Retail Park, is one of the first to install the new kiosks which allow customers to browse the entire menu and check out the nutritional information of each meal at the same time. Once customers have completed their order, they can then pay by card or contactless, and then go straight to a designated area of the counter to pick up their order.

As well as the kiosks, free to use tablets have also been installed at some tables in the restaurant for customers who want to check their emails, play the latest games or go online.

The digital transformation of the Victoria Retail Park restaurant has been made possible thanks to investment from local franchisee Jerry Nicholls.

Jerry, who started his career over 30 years ago as a Crew Member with the global restaurant chain, now runs six sites across Nottingham, including the one at Victoria Retail Park.

He said: “We’re thrilled to be committed to offering our customers more choice and fast service.

“Technology has a huge role to play in all walks of life, including our customers’ eating out experience, so the new tech we’ve introduced recognises the way people live their lives today.”

He added: “The response to the changes from my team has been very positive and they are enjoying the new ways of working. To ensure we continue to create an outstanding customer experience, I am also continuing to invest in my people through our industry-leading training programmes and career opportunities. ”

Many of the new features from Victoria Retail Park will begin to appear in other McDonald’s restaurants in Nottinghamshire, with the restaurant on Angel Row and in Castle Marina, Valley Road, Arnold and Bulwell also happening this year.

Paul Pomroy, CEO, McDonald’s UK, said: “We are confident that the investment we are making will bring new and exciting changes to McDonald’s across Nottingham and the rest of the UK.

“We’ve listened to customer feedback and know we need to modernise further in order to move the McDonald’s experience on, and remain relevant to the lives of the 3 million customers that we serve daily.

“Our converted restaurants like Victoria Retail Park will deliver a fast and easy experience, aided by digital and traditional ordering points ensuring we continue to be enjoyed by our customers.”

Try out the new cycling experience at Queens Drive Park & Ride

A new BMX skills and pumptrack will launch this weekend at Queens Drive Park & Ride site.

Pumptracks are a fantastic way for riders of all ages to learn and practice the skills needed to tackle advanced downhill tracks, allowing riders to build up their confidence and improve their bike handling techniques without the danger of big jumps and drops. Novices can simply roll over each section at their own pace while more advanced riders can take full advantage of the ‘doubles’ and ‘table tops’ to jump, to increase their speed and learn new cornering techniques.

The track was built by Clixbys and cost £50,000 to complete, funded by Nottingham’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund Programme.

There is free parking so cyclists can either cycle down or bring their bike in a car. The skills track has easy and hard terrains, curved boardwalks and shaped rocks to ensure that cyclists of all abilities are safely challenged.

Local cycling charity Ridewise is offering free cycle training and bikes to test out the tracks as a Cycling for All event. There will also be a bike display by Savage Skills, a freestyle BMX stunt team. There will also be information stalls and refreshments to purchase from the Pulp Friction Smoothie Bar Project.

Queens Drive Park & Ride already boasts regular cycle events, a great woodland walk and wildflower meadow, is home to Nottingham’s electric bus fleet, has an electric charging infrastructure, the opportunity to hire an electric car through our City Car Club, Citycard Cycle hire and cycle  Hub facilities in addition to the traditional park and ride bus services.

Portfolio Holder for Growth, Jobs and Transport Councillor McDonald said: “As the Cycle City we are continually looking for new ways to encourage people to get on to two wheels. The new pump and skills track offers a thrilling opportunity to enjoy a real cycling challenge and to learn new cycling skills for free.

“With so much going on, Queens Drive Park & Ride is rapidly becoming a visitor attraction in its own right.”

The launch event takes place on Sunday July 19 between 11am and 2pm.  Join our Facebook event page at for more information https://www.facebook.com/events/1472302209746748/

County women urged to be clear on signs of breast cancer

0

Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County councils are supporting the new NHS Be Clear on Cancer, ‘Breast cancer in women over 70’ campaign.

The national campaign, which  runs over the summer until 6 September, aims to raise awareness of breast cancer symptoms in women aged 70 and over, informing them that 1 in 3 women who get breast cancer are over 70, ‘so don’t assume you’re past it’.

The campaign also emphasises that ‘a lump is not the only sign of breast cancer’.   Other possible signs of breast cancer include a lump in the armpit, nipple changes, changes to the skin of the breast, changes to breast shape or size.  If a woman has any of these symptoms, she should contact her doctor straight away.

Breast cancer survival is lower in women aged over 70 than in younger women. Research shows that older women are less ‘breast aware’ and are more likely to delay going to their doctor. Women may experience embarrassment, be afraid of treatment or dismiss the symptoms as a sign of ageing; this campaign is encouraging them not to let these concerns stop them from making an appointment with their doctor.

The earlier breast cancer is diagnosed the higher the chances of survival and the more treatment options are available. More than 90% of all women diagnosed with the earliest stage breast cancer survive their disease for at least five years. This figure is around 15% for women diagnosed with the most advanced stage of the disease.

Cllr Alex Norris, Nottingham City Council Portfolio Holder for Public Health said:

“One in three women who get breast cancer are over 70, so it’s absolutely crucial that they are aware of the symptoms. A lump isn’t the only sign of breast cancer so as soon as any woman notices any changes in her breasts, she should visit her doctor.”

Cllr Joyce Bosnjak, Chair of Nottinghamshire County Council’s Public Health Committee said:

“Women should not be embarrassed or scared about going to see a doctor.  The earlier breast cancer is diagnosed, the higher the chance of survival. More than 90% of all women diagnosed with the earliest stage of breast cancer survive their disease for at least five years. Women, especially older women, need to be alert to any changes in their breast straight away.”

Bestwood burglar nabbed after introducing himself to victim

0

A distraction burglar from Bestwood was caught by police after introducing himself to the victim using his own name.

Simon Bedding, 29, of Andover Road, Bestwood, was sentenced to four-and-a-half years behind bars on Friday (July 10) after pleading guilty at an earlier hearing at Nottingham Crown Court.

The court heard that on Friday, March 13, 2015, Bedding had been in Worksop posing as a door-to-door salesman.

He approached a house belonging to a blind lady and her guide dog and sold her £40 worth of cleaning products.

He then left the house but returned claiming he had left his mobile phone behind and asking to use the toilet. When the victim agreed Bedding, who had given his first name during the exchange, stole her bag which contained a significant amount of cash and her mobile phone.

When the victim realised her phone and bag were missing she called the police.

Officers used forensics from the products sold to the victim and the information she had given to link Bedding to the scene.

He was arrested for burglary and fraud.

Detective Constable Lee Keeling, said: “Bedding saw an opportunity to target a vulnerable victim and taking full advantage of her kindness he stole her bag and phone after being invited back into her home.

“He was brazen enough to use his own first name when speaking to the victim which proved to be his downfall. This information coupled with the DNA on the cleaning materials he had sold to the victim ensured a lengthy prison spell.

He added: “Never feel pressured into letting strangers into your property. Always ask for some form of identification or ask for them to call back another time when you have other family members in the house.
