A police watchdog investigating the death of a man arrested in Carlton is appealing for witnesses to come forward.

The man was arrested following reports of a collision on Southdale Road in Carlton.

The incident took place at around 10pm on January 5.

The man arrested later became unwell enroute to the custody suite; he later died at Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre.

The newly formed Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), formerly the IPCC –  has now launched an investigation after a referral from Nottinghamshire Police, in line with standard practice when a death or similar incident occurs.

IOPC director for the Midlands, Derrick Campbell, said: “Our investigation is looking at the contact between police officers and the man prior to his tragic death. “I would like to express my condolences to his family, friends any anyone else affected.

“We have met with the family to explain our role and our thoughts remain with them.”

The IOPC want to hear from anyone who saw any interaction between the man and police officers near the church on Southdale Road  at the time the ambulance arrived.

Anyone with information should contact the IOPC on 0800 096 9070 or email witness@policeconduct.gov.uk.
