Smartphone users across Gedling borough are being warned not to be tricked into downloading a fake version of WhatsApp that will infect their device with malware.
Messages are being sent to the inboxes of users inviting them to download the ‘exclusive’ WhatsApp Gold, which promises enhanced features including the ability to send 100 pictures at once and also make video calls.
Those that do follow the link are taken to a fake download page that will infect the user’s Android device with malware.
This software can be then used by criminals to steal data putting your passwords and bank details at risk.
WhatsApp Gold is the latest version of an earlier scam known as WhatsApp Plus, which offered users similar features to lure them into clicking on a download link that would infect their device with malware.
Geoff Wing, a digital expert from Carlton, said that if the link had been clicked then Android users should make sure antivirus software is installed as quickly as possible.
“Plenty of antivirus software is available on Google Play store so that should be the first port of call for any user who has clicked on the link and downloaded the malware.”
