‘Groundbreaking’ ceremony marks start of construction work on 763 homes at Top Wighay site

A groundbreaking ceremony has marked the start of work on a new 763 housing development near Linby.

Cllr Sam Smith, Leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, and deputy leader of Gedling Borough Council Jenny Hollingsworth joined leading figures from Vistry Group, who are constructing the 763 new homes, to celebrate the start of work on the development at Top Wighay,

The £191m development forms part of Nottinghamshire County Council’s (NCC) flagship mixed-use scheme. The 86-acre site, contracted in 2023 with NCC and earmarked for development for more than a decade, will also include 21 acres of employment land, a local centre with retail and a new primary school.

Now the ceremonial spade has been placed in the ground, work will start imminently on the 763 homes

Now the ceremonial spade has been placed in the ground, work will start imminently on the 763 one-, two-, three, four-, and five-bedroom homes, maisonettes and apartments. Of the new homes, 269 will be affordable properties, 97 will be available for private rental and 397 will be on sale on the open market through Vistry’s Linden, Bovis and Countryside brands.

In addition to new housing, the developers said there would be benefits to the wider community, with almost £6million designated to bolstering local services. This includes £4,750,000 for education, £800,000 for highways and bus improvements, and £436,000 towards healthcare.

The scheme also includes new parks, sports facilities, wildlife corridors, pedestrian and cycle routes, a new primary school, and an on-site Skills Academy in partnership with Chameleon School of Construction. This innovative training initiative will aim to encourage local people not in employment or training back into work.

Cllr Jenny Hollingsworth,  Portfolio Holder for Sustainable Growth and Economy at Gedling Borough Council, said: I am delighted that work is beginning to provide 763 much needed homes, together with improved infrastructure, including highways, education, health, and a local centre.

The plan for on-site skills and training is particularly welcomed and will provide great opportunities for local people and the local economy.

The site has been allocated for development for some time so it’s particularly good to see that this significant investment has allowed this project to get underway. I very much look forward to following its progress over the next few years ”

Cllr Sam Smith, leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “This milestone marks a significant step forward in a project that will bring lasting benefits to Nottinghamshire. From a brand-new primary school to improved transport links and employment opportunities, this investment will enhance local services and create a vibrant, sustainable community for generations to come.”

Andy Reynolds, managing director of Vistry Group’s partnerships division in the South East Midlands, said: We were delighted to welcome key figures to celebrate the start of work on these much-needed new family homes at Top Wighay. Over the past year, we have consulted with the community to finalise the details of the scheme and ensure it meets local people’s needs and now we are on site, ready to create a new community of high-quality properties for people in the area to call home.”

Arnold woman member of group jailed following record slam gun, pistol and drugs recovery

An Arnold woman was part of a group of criminals who have been handed nearly 50 years’ worth of prison sentences after police made the biggest recovery of improvised firearms in its history – while exposing a drugs conspiracy too.

Eight of the so-called ‘slam guns’ as well as shotgun cartridges were found inside one Nottingham house, while a loaded pistol and magazines of ammunition for the gun were at another.

Bulk quantities of drugs were discovered inside both addresses, with cannabis also found growing – in some cases on an industrial level – at four other linked properties across the city.

Ringleader Christopher Jones was central to all the firearm and drugs offences, with associate Lee Blake housing the slam guns, and Sophie Wootton, Drew Williamson and Joanne Allen involved to various degrees.

The slam guns and several shotgun cartridges compatible with the firearms were seized from a cupboard by officers while they were executing a warrant in Thomas Close, St Ann’s, on November 3, 2022.

Each of the homemade weapons looked alike, with two pieces of pipe fitted together with a firing pin designed to slam and discharge a single shot. The eight recovered represented a record for the Nottinghamshire Police area.

Members of the group jailed on March 31

Within the same address – owned by Lee Blake – more ammunition was found that matched a handgun recovered days earlier in Barry Street, Bulwell. That weapon was forensically examined and pointed police to Blake when his DNA was found on it.

Officers initially attended Barry Street on October 23, after receiving an unrelated report about Sophie Wootton, the then girlfriend of Christopher Jones.

After police arrived and spotted cannabis was being grown at the address, they searched it further and ultimately seized a viable handgun, two magazines’ worth of ammunition, and a box of shotgun cartridges.

Approximately two-and-a-half kilos of cannabis with an estimated street value of up to £20,000 was within the address too, along with around £55,000 in cash.

Police caught up with Jones on October 26 when he and Drew Williamson were seen leaving a house in Knowles Walk, Arnold, and getting into a vehicle together, which was duly stopped by officers.

Ten kilos of cannabis was found in the boot of the car, with a further 14 kilos then seized when the address they’d just left was searched.

A one kilo block of cocaine and thousands of pounds of cash were also recovered from the Knowles Walk property. The total estimated value of the drugs seized from the address and the car totalled an estimated street value of up to £333,000.

Three further properties linked to Jones – in Egypt Road, Basford, Raymede Drive, Bestwood, and Deepdene Way, Broxtowe – were all later found to be housing cannabis grows to varying degrees.

The latter discovery was made by officers on October 27, with Joanne Allen the next person to be detained by police when they located her inside that house.

Allen admitted to the charge of producing cannabis put to her, while Blake pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life, possessing ammunition without a certificate, and supplying cannabis.

Jones, Wootton, and Williamson also pleaded guilty to supplying cannabis but denied the rest of the offences they’d been charged with – although none of them were able to convince the jury in the resulting eight-week trial, which concluded on 17 January.

Jones was convicted of possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life, possessing a prohibited firearm, possessing ammunition without a certificate, being concerned in the supply of cocaine, possessing with intent to supply cocaine, and possessing criminal property.

Wootton was found guilty of possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life, possessing a prohibited firearm, possessing ammunition without a certificate, and possessing criminal property.

Williamson was convicted of possessing with intent to supply cocaine and possessing criminal property.

All five returned to Nottingham Crown Court to be sentenced today (March 31), where they were jailed for a combined 47 years.

  • Jones, 33, of Glamis Road, Sherwood, was jailed for 25 years.
  • Wootton, 32, of Broxtowe Lane, Aspley, received an eight year prison sentence.
  • Blake, 40, of Thomas Close, St Ann’s, received a nine year extended prison sentence. He will serve six years in custody, before remaining on licence for a further three years.
  • Williamson, 28, of Knowles Walk, Arnold, was jailed for five years.
  • Allen, 56, of Deepdene Way, Broxtowe, received a 12 month sentence, suspended for two years. She must also complete 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days.

Detective Inspector Chris Berryman, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Seizing these firearms represented a big win for the people of Nottinghamshire, whose safety their presence would’ve otherwise put at risk.

“In fact, the detection of the eight slam guns during this operation made it the biggest discovery of its kind that we’ve seen in our policing area.

“On top of that, a handgun and a range of different ammunition was also found at a separate address that had links to the other one.

“It can’t be stressed enough how dangerous and serious an offence it is to be in possession of a lethal firearm, whether that be a viable handgun or an improvised one like a slam gun.

“The sentences passed to Jones, Blake and Wootton should serve as a warning to anyone else thinking of getting mixed up in gun crime about the penalties they could face.

“In addition to the firearms seizures, we were also able to uncover and disrupt a drugs supply operation, led by Jones, that involved the production of cannabis on an industrial scale.

“Following an extensive investigation that involved countless hours of police work, we were really pleased to see the strong case we built help secure each of these convictions, with the high total custodial sentences issued today just reward for these efforts.”

Borough green space could be rebranded Sports Direct Country Park with billionaire expected to bid for naming rights

A popular green space could soon be known locally as the Sports Direct Country Park after it emerged billionaire businessman Mike Ashley is poised to join the race to secure the renaming rights for Gedling Country Park.

Gedling Borough Council are considering accepting a bid for rights to rename the attraction in a bid to raise much-needed revenue to fund other activities across the borough.

It is understood a number of parties have been approached by the council and are said to be interested, including Sports Direct and Frazers founder Mike Ashley.

Sources close to the London-based businessman revealed he is keen to acquire naming rights to a UK green space due to its association with fitness and health – which would be a perfect fit for his Sports Direct and Everlast Gyms brand.

Documents seen by Gedling Eye revealed that the winning bidder would have the right to rename the park and also create retail space within the popular visitor’s centre – making a bid appealing to retailer Ashley.

The park attracts more than 100,000 a year and would create a huge amount of footfall for any future Sports Direct store based at the attraction.

One park goer who didn’t wish to be named said: “This is outrageous. I won’t be supporting it. Sports Direct Country Park sounds ridiculous. Keep it as it is.”

Joe King lives in nearby Carlton and visits the park daily. He slammed the move.

Mr King said: “Everything is up for sale these days to cash rich businesses. Any commercial name change would put me off visiting. I hope this is just a stupid rumour and not true.”

Gedling school ‘thrilled’ after receiving national award for careers education

A Gedling high school has been awarded with a national gong in recognition for its careers education.

Carlton le Willows Academy has been handed the national Quality in Careers Standard in recognition of the importance they place on careers and support offered to students to make decisions about their life after school.

The school offers a range of activities to introduce students to the work of work and help them make decisions about life after school.

Jaspal Mehat, principal at Carlton le Willows said: “We are thrilled to have achieved the national Quality in Careers Standard.

“At Carlton le Willows we recognise the important role school plays in helping students develop their knowledge, skills and experience so they can go out into the world and achieve personal success.

“We are always keen to make sure students are receiving advice, practical support and experience so they are prepared for the next stage of their education, employment, self-employment or training.”

Sir Keir Starmer says 24,000 people who have ‘no right to be here’ have been returned – and wants illegal immigration to be treated ‘like terrorism’

Sir Keir Starmer has said 24,000 people who “have no right to be here” have been returned since Labour took power during a speech at a government border security summit held earlier today (31).

The Prime Minister said this was the highest returns rate for eight years.

He was speaking at the Organised Immigration Crime Summit, where over 40 countries and organisations have come together to agree new action to smash people-smuggling gangs.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer

At the Summit the Prime Minister set out how he will be giving law enforcement tougher powers than ever to smash the smuggling gangs, ramping up removals to record levels, surging illegal working raids to end the false promise of jobs used by gangs to sell spaces on boats and leading a renewed international law enforcement effort.

The PM said: “Immigration crime funds the vile people-smuggling gangs that trade in human misery, breach our borders and threaten Britain’s economic security. This government is taking back control, doing the hard graft needed to deliver results, working with our international allies to smash these gangs and secure our borders.

“We’ve already removed more than 24,000 people with no right to be here and we’re finally shutting down exploitative illegal working, dismantling criminal networks, while forcing people-smuggling gangs out of business.

“For too long, the UK was a soft touch. That ends now. No more gimmicks, no empty promises, just serious action for British security.”

This is backed by landmark legislation through the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill, giving new powers to seize migrants’ phones to identify smugglers, criminalise those who endanger lives at sea, and ensure every business carries out right-to-work checks – ending the exploitation of illegal labour for good.

Senior Conservative shadow minister Alex Burghart told Sky News on Sunday that the Labour government should not have scrapped the Rwanda deportation plan when it came to power.

He said the programme, which was aimed at deterring people from making the journey across the English Channel in small boats, had been “ready to go” but that there was now “no deterrent” in place.

Generous football fans donate more than 122kg of supplies to Netherfield food bank

Kind-hearted supporters of Carlton Town FC joined forces with their opposition to gather much-needed donations for a Netherfield foodbank.

The Millers, who play their home games at The Bill Stokeld Stadium, held their annual food drive during their game against Ossett United – and it was a huge success.

Netherfield Foodbank requested donations of items most demand, these being toilet rolls, jam, tinned vegetables, UHT milk, teabags, squash, pouches of cooked rice and chocolate bars – and the fans delivered.

The pool table in the clubhouse was covered and piled high with donations as bag after bag came in.

A total of 122,90kg of food and toiletries were collected during the drive which was organised by the club in conjunction with the Carlton Town Supporters Club.

The donations were handed over to Foodbank supporters Nikki Brooks and Mark Glover after the match.

Netherfield Foodbank is is based in Bethseda Ministries’ United Pentecostal Church on Forester Street and opens each Wednesday between 1.30-3pm.

The Millers continue their push for a play-off place on Saturday with a home game against Yorkshire side Brighouse Town. The Millers are 8th in the table. Brighouse sit in 15th place.

Arnold Town 3-1 Holbrook Sports

The Eagles ended their three-game losing skid with an impressive attacking performance that included enough goal scoring opportunities to have seen them out of sight by half time. Still, they managed to come through after a tense finish to pick up three vital points which should be enough to guarantee their transferable Step 7 status for next season.

Manager Ash White, with a relatively full squad at the moment, was able to cover the absence of veteran Lenny Jenkins, new signing Tyreece Warren-Wilkinson and wide man Adam Stephenson with the return of George Harrold, Delane Hylton and Jake Ogden.

Despite a typical chilly wind factor swirling around it Eagle Valley was looking an absolute picture in the bright sunshine with the pitch and surrounds in top notch condition. A sight very much for sore eyes after the Arna’s last two away trips!

A fair few hold-ups managed to delay the start of the match until 3.07pm but once under way the Eagles made a bright start attacking the Colin End and got themselves in front after just three minutes.

A free kick chipped into the wind by Cal Jones found George Harrold available at the edge of the Colin area. George promptly slid the ball forward to Toby Francis who after a neat side step appeared to tumble to the ground with both he and Sports keeper Sam Linford grappling for the ball only for it to spin backwards towards goal. The striker was able to recover his balance first and lunged to encourage the ball across the line. Possibly not the most spectacular Toby Francis goal you’ll ever witness but they all count and more importantly the Eagles were ahead.

They most certainly should have been further in front on 13 mins. Francis again was in the thick of the action with his number 20 shirt almost pulled off him by a Sports defender some 35 yards from goal. Still the striker managed to lay off a pass in the direction of the speedy Callum Jones who, having taken the ball past Linford as smooth as silk, only had to slide it into the empty net but somehow managed to find the left hand post instead.

Minutes later and I’m heavily circling the word CHANCE again in my notes! A Delane Hylton throw in from the right made its way via a swift one-two to Jamie Crawford in the box. JC managed to set up Francis who after some lovely close ball control let loose a shot which only just failed to find the target.

Both teams were coping pretty well with the gusting conditions but the wind almost helped the visitors equalise when a long turbo charged bouncing ball completely deceived Eagles keeper Danny Rigley. Rigley had advanced out of his area only to see the ball soar over his head by a foot or so and continue on its trajectory towards goal to be intercepted just in time by an extremely alert Hylton.

As the half progressed Linford in the Sports goal was certainly the busier keeper with Arnold putting together some well worked moves creating decent scoring opportunities for Jones, Francis and Kyme Mason in turn. But at the other end Holbrook were also having their moments and the feeling on the side line was that one goal would more than likely not be enough to win the day.

A first 45 minutes which could have seen a number of goals for the home side ended with another chance sparked by the enterprising Francis. After hotly contesting a high ball in the centre circle Toby battled well to break free from his marker with only a mere half a length of the pitch between him and the Colin goal.

The foot race was on with ball, Francis and central defender in tow. Toby was determined to keep himself ahead whilst the Sports player appeared to be clinging on to a runaway train. The striker finally let loose a fierce shot on goal which Linford did well to parry with the ball squirting free. By the time Jamie Crawford was finally the first fellow yellow shirt to make it to the scene Linford had managed to sufficiently recover both himself and the loose ball.

All in all quite a dramatic end to the half with the ref and Toby blowing for half time leaving the Eagles with just a one goal advantage to show for their efforts.

The second half turned the wind in Arnold’s favour a little and the yellows continued very much on the front foot. After a couple of early corners a long ball from Danny Rigley mixed a pure route one opportunity into proceedings with the mercurial Jake Ogden the next player to touch the ball applying a skilful flush volley at full stretch that brought out another fine save from Linford.

After a tremendous amount of effort up to this point Toby Francis was replaced on 58 mins with Ash White having the luxury of Eagles’ top goal scorer Akeem Campbell on the  bench. After a brief scare when Sports sub Ewan Barnes sent in a fizzer flying just above the Colin End bar the Eagles were once again on the offensive.

A ball played from right to left of midfield was perfectly paced for Cal Jones to run onto and after some neat control managed to feed the ball back in towards Gerrard Hallam who allowed it to bounce before launching a half volley from the edge of the area which Linford again did well to save low to his right hand post, pushing the ball away for a corner.

With the pressure sustained for another minute or two a long throw in from the left by Jones was well met by a Jamie Royle back header across the face of the goal where Gerrard Hallam was on hand to thump it home with another well timed volley to give the home side a fully deserved two goal lead on 63 mins.

The cushion allowed Callum Jones to retire from the action still working his way back to full Step 7 fitness to be replaced by Max Elliott who almost got on the end of another fine Arna move just a minute later with the Holbrook defence all over the place.

For all their possession the Eagles still contrived to create a tense finish when skipper Kyme Mason clipped the ankle of a Sports forward on the left side of Arnold’s area providing Ewan Barnes with the opportunity to cut Arnold’s lead in half with a well executed penalty low into the bottom right hand corner with a little over 20 minutes remaining.

Dan Chambers replaced Gerrard Hallam shortly afterwards and once again an Arna sub almost got himself on the score sheet within a minute of arriving on the pitch. After a lovely scorching run by Jake Ogden down the left and a quick interchange with Akeem Campbell the ball was set up perfectly for a Chambers effort which thundered against the right hand post.

Now was the time for Holbrook Sports to press for an equaliser and in truth for the next ten minutes or so the Arnold defence were seeing their first sustained period of action with the Eagles’ slender lead looking more than a little shaky at times.

Keeping a lid on things with around five minutes of normal time remaining Jamie Royle then managed to create a mini storm with a strong tackle of the left side of midfield. A booking was always a possibility but nothing quite warranted the extreme reaction that exploded from the visiting team. In stark contrast a couple of heavy challenges on teenager Max Elliott over the next minute or so when play finally resumed met with the varsity player just getting to his feet, dusting himself down and hobbling on.

With time running out a high ball into Sports’ area was well saved by a second Holbrook keeper with his arms well above his head but no matter the game was finally put to bed a minute or so into added time.

Excellent play by Nicko on the left fed the ball to Elliott who just managed to avoid another sliding scissor like tackle to run on and deliver a perfect ball across the area where Jake Ogden was on hand to apply a terrific finish slamming home his 30th goal for the club. Only the 21st Arnold Town player to reach this landmark since our reformation in 1989!

Well, it all made for quite a rousing finish with yet more to come in this rat-a-tat schedule on Tuesday, 1st April when Mickleover RBL are set to visit the Valley for a 7.45pm kick off.

MATCH REPORT: North Ferriby FC 1-1 Carlton Town

NPL First Division East

The result might have been even better had Nat Watson’s injury time screamer not crashed against the crossbar but the Millers will be pleased to have continued their unbeaten run in 2025.  They are just two points outside the playoffs with five games remaining of the season.

Mark Harvey and Tommy Brookbanks made one enforced change to the side which had beaten Emley last time out, with Liam Bateman replacing the injured Charlie Carter.

On a blustery day on the banks of the Humber, Carlton got off to the perfect start with a goal from the penalty spot on the quarter hour mark.  Bateman played a lovely ball to send Liam Moran into the area ahead of ex-Belper man Danny South.  South brought down Moran but protested furiously that he had won the ball fairly in the tackle.  He may have had a point.  The referee wasn’t interested and captain Niall Davie confidently fired home via the inside of the post.

The goal spurred on the visitors, who were looking to extend a six match winning run, and the excellent Dean Freeman headed just over from a Lamin Manneh corner soon afterwards.

The Villagers have promotion ambitions of their own and they also looked dangerous going forward, with Manneh tracking back to make one fine block in the left back position and Felix Annan saving from the impressive Luke Hogg.

With the half drawing to a close Moran saw a shot well saved by Ben Bottomley in the Ferriby goal before the keeper then made the first of two crucial saves either side of half time which undoubtedly kept his side in the game.

The first of those came after Moran sent Ollie Clark through on goal on the left.  Bottomley stood his ground and the Carlton man’s shot was well saved.

Immediately after the break a Manneh shot was deflected into the path of Lewis Durow, directly in front of goal.  He tried to place his shot beyond Bottomley but the keeper made a tremendous stop to deny the Millers.

Ferriby were buoyed by the saves but the Millers midfield of Davie, Khyle Sargent, Clark and Watson were still on top.  However, that changed on the hour when Ferriby’s Alex Flett scored direct from a corner with the strong wind no doubt helping and the referee not interested in Annan’s claims that he was impeded.

Ferriby went for the win and took control of the midfield.  Only some tremendous defensive work, particularly from Freeman and Lawrence Gorman, kept the home side at bay in a spell of sustained pressure.

Carlton responded with a triple substitution with Niall Hylton, Alex Howes and Greg Tempest all joining the fray, soon followed by Michael Ford.  The changes undoubtedly achieved the desired purpose from a Carlton perspective with the Ferriby attacks subsiding and Carlton looking to get a winner of their own.

Ford made one fine advance down the right before crossing to Moran only for the ball to be cleared before the Villagers launched a speedy counter attack after a Durow throw was cleared.  Annan had to come a long way out of his area to deal with the danger and spent some time being treated after being fouled.

With the game in the final stages North Ferriby had a golden chance to win the game.  A Flett corner was headed back across goal by Tom Corner to Josh Thacker who volleyed wide of target.

Diego Edwards was by now also on the pitch and he drew a comfortable save from Bottomley after being set up by Hylton.

With the game in the first of five added minutes the Millers went desperately close to snatching all three points.  A long free kick into the area was headed clear by Corner but only as far as the lurking Watson who showed great control to take the ball down before hitting a piledriver that smashed against the crossbar with Bottomley beaten.

That was the final chance of the game with Carlton surviving one later Ferriby free kick to secure what could be a vey valuable point.  They left the field to richly deserved applause from the healthy away contingent in the crowd.
