Only one case of Covid-19 was recorded in Gedling borough over last 24 hours as numbers remain low across Notts

Just one case of Covid-19 was recoded over a 24-hour period in Gedling borough, the latest data has revealed.

The figures released today (April 14) show Gedling recorded just one case for the second day running.

45 cases were recorded across Notts over the same 24-hour period.

Broxtowe was the only area to record no new cases. Just one case was also recorded in Rushcliffe, which was a rise as zero cases were reported during the previous day.

Gedling MP urges people to get vaccine and ‘continue on roadmap out of lockdown’ after its revealed more than 50,000 in borough have now had first jab

Gedling MP Tom Randall has urged people in the borough to get the vaccine and ‘continue on our roadmap out of lockdown’.

Mr Randall said he received his first dose of the vaccine last week at Boots in Nottingham

He also thanked all those involved in the COVID-19 vaccine roll-out programme and is now encouraging people to take the opportunity of a vaccine once it is offered, so that lockdown restrictions can continue to be lifted.

The Gedling MP said: “We are able to return to beer gardens, shops, gyms, zoos and beauty salons this week thanks to the amazing efforts made to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

“The vaccine roll-out is our way out of further restrictions. Last week I received my first dose of the vaccine and I am pleased that over 50,230 Gedling residents have now had the jab.

“I thank all those across Gedling who are helping with the roll-out, particularly the teams at the vaccination hub in Carlton’s Richard Herrod Centre”

During questions to the Department for Health and Social Care yesterday, Mr Randall said: “Last week I became one of the 32,000,000 people who had their first jab, at Boots the Chemist in Nottingham”

He went on to ask the Minister for COVID Vaccine Deployment Nadhim Zahawi MP: “Will my Honourable Friend join me in thanking all those in places such as Boots and all those involved in the roll-out of the Pfizer-BioNTech, Oxford-AstraZeneca and Moderna vaccines? Does he agree that the best way out of this situation is to get that jab, and that when the time comes and people get the call, they should take that opportunity as soon as they can?”

In reply, the Minister for COVID Vaccine Deployment Nadhim Zahawi MP said: “I absolutely agree, and I thank Boots the Chemist not only for its frontline capability but for its distribution arm, which has helped us to distribute Pfizer-BioNTech, Oxford-AstraZeneca and, now, Moderna.

“I agree that when people get the call, they should come forward and have their jab.”

Vehicle seized after police discover car meet at Victoria Retail Park in Netherfield

Police have seized a vehicle from Victoria Retail Park in Netherfield after discovering a car meet while out on patrol.

The neighbourhood and Specials policing teams have increased patrols in the area following reports of anti-social behaviour and car meets at the retail site off Colwick Loop Road.

The vehicle was seized last night (April 13) by police as the driver had no licence or insurance. He has now been reported for the offences.

The retail park used to be a hotspot for ‘car cruisers’ several years ago, with hundreds of vehicles meeting up to race against each other, perform stunts and blast music from car stereos and often went on into the early hours of the morning.

Tough new measures were secured through the courts back in January 2015 to ban the large gatherings .

Nottinghamshire County Council, with the support of Nottinghamshire Police and other community safety partners, secured an Injunction Order which banned the boy racers from a range of car cruising activity at the location.

Meets reported across Notts

Earlier this week police put a 24-hour dispersal order in place at East Midlands Parkway station following a large gathering on Sunday evening. 

300 vehicles were reportedly parked up at the railway station – with some drivers seen to be driving dangerously and at high speeds through nearby roads.

Around 50 car drivers had also earlier attended a cinema car park in Lenton and were safely dispersed by officers before moving on to the railway station

Neighbourhood Inspector Craig Berry said: “While we can of course understand people’s desire to want to be out with friends again, the government and our health colleagues remain cautious.

“We would like to remind people that we are not totally out of lockdown measures and Covid-19 still remains a threat. 

“We put this dispersal order on to provide officers with extra powers to deal with those breaking the law and causing antisocial behaviour.

“The authority enables us to seize vehicles as well as ban people from the area for up to 24 hours if they are causing or are likely to cause any issues.

“We are working with organisers, the local authority and other partners to make these events as safe and crime-free as possible.

“Where necessary, we will seize vehicles and issue fines under Coronavirus legislation. In addition to this action, we are working with nearby businesses to discuss changes that can be made to security arrangements which will prevent such gatherings in the future.

“We have issued tickets on various occasions in the past and we will continue to do so where appropriate.

Drone footage shows progress being made on new £18.5m police and fire headquarters in Arnold

New drone footage reveals the progress being made on the new £18.5m joint police and fire headquarters in Arnold.

The new aerial footage from Sherwood Lodge shows how a new three-storey building at the existing home of Nottinghamshire Police is being complemented by a range of other improvements across the site.

Beeston-based contractors Henry Brothers Midlands started work on site in mid-July and have now completed most of the main structural work on the new build.

Once completed it will contain shared office space for Nottinghamshire Police and Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, a new police-control room, a sports hall, gymnasium and canteen.

Police and fire chiefs say work is progressing on time and on budget and the first staff are expected to move into the new facility in January 2022.

Superintendent Paul Winter, who is leading on the project for Nottinghamshire Police, said: “As this new footage shows this really is a vast project. From the new access road, that now circles the site to the hundreds of new parking spaces, the new joint campus is really starting to take shape.

“It really is a testament to the skill and professionalism of all involved that – despite the ongoing pandemic – we remain on schedule to open in January.

“However this new project really is about more than just building work; it is the next step in a far longer-journey of collaboration projects between the two services. We already share several premises and other key resources – including the drone that we used to film this footage.

“Both organisations are committed to keeping our communities safe and I am excited about the role this new headquarters will play in that collective ambition.”

Damien West, Area Manager at Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “This new footage highlights the amazing work being undertaken at Sherwood Lodge to accommodate our new Joint Headquarters. This exciting new phase in our Service’s history is fast approaching and it is great to see the building developing so well.”

Eagle-eyed motorists flew into action to rescue a duck and ducklings heading towards disaster in Carlton.

The mum and her 11 chicks were heading up towards the lights at Manor Road junction, and looked like they were going to attempt to cross the busy Burton Road.

Cars stopped at Park’s Corner and tried to usher the group back to safety.

Never one to duck out of a challenge, local resident Francis Rodrigues saw people getting into a flap while trying to force them back to safety and swooped in to lend a hand.

He said: “I was driving up to Park’s Corner and the car in front slowed for no reason – then I saw why.

“The mother duck and her 11 chicks were walking in the gutter towards Manor Road lights.

“I parked up and rushed back to make sure they were safe. A lady was already ushering them back to safety down Burton Road.

“Together we managed to shepherd them back to the safety of their nest in a nearby garden.”

Greggs confirms its Mapperley shop will close down for good

Greggs has announced that its shop on Mapperley Top is closing down permanently.

The bakery giant today revealed the store on Woodborough Road will shut its doors for good next month.

Gedling Eye contacted Greggs after being told of the rumours.

A spokesman said: “We can confirm that our Mapperley shop is due to close in May.

“We are always on the lookout for new locations and a full list of our shops in the local area can be found at Greggs.co.uk/shopfinder.”

People had mixed reactions to the news.

Sue Brazer, a Mapperley resident, said: “It’s another blow to our high street. A lot of shops are starting to close down around here. Barclays will be going soon. There won’t be anything left on Mapperley Top the way it’s going. I think the council should do something.

Ryan Bishop lives in nearby Sherwood. he said: “I think Mapperley is still better for shops than Sherwood. It’s not terrible to see a chain store go if it’s replaced by a great independent store. I’d love a record or comic shop up here.”

Police seize cash, phones and drugs after vehicle is stopped in Daybrook

Cash and drugs were seized after police stopped a vehicle in Daybrook.

Officers stopped the vehicle on Valley Road on Sunday (April 11, 2021) at around 10.30am.  

The car was searched and cocaine, cash and four mobile phones were recovered. A search of the men’s property in Arnold found further cash and phones which were also seized.

Following checks on police systems, two men aged 33 and 26 were arrested on suspicion of burglary, theft of motor vehicle and possession with intent to supply a class A drug. The men have since been bailed.  

Inspector Kylie Davies said: “This was an excellent stop by officers following intelligence supplied to us. 

“We actively seek out drugs activity across the county and undertake a number of covert and overt methods in order to uncover anyone who may be involved in such criminality.

“Our officers work closely with local communities to help gather intelligence and build up information that could lead to more action being taken.

“That’s why it’s crucial that if you see any suspicious activity in your area, you report it.

“We welcome information from members of the public, if anyone has concerns about drug offences operating in their area, please get in touch with us on 101.”

Plea issued after two ‘deliberate’ fires started at Gedling House Woods

A group of volunteers are urging residents to help them tackle fires being started ‘deliberately’ in Gedling House Woods by reporting them.

Two fires were reported by visitors yesterday (April 12) to the Friends of Gedling House Woods (FGHW) group and then extinguished quickly.

One smaller fire was extinguished by volunteers and a larger fire in the evening was put out by teams form the fire service.

One of the group’s volunteers wrote in a Facebook post: “Two fires were started in the woods yesterday.

“One was lit by two youths who claimed to be ‘trying to keep warm’ and was extinguished using cans of water at about 4.30pm.

“The second fire was a much larger fire and caused damage to the surrounding trees. The Fire Service attended at about 8.15pm and extinguished the fire successfully using a long hose from Wood Lane.

“Four youths were seen leaving the site and it is possible that they started the fire.

“It is not clear if the two fires are connected in any way, or purely coincidental.”

He added: “Many thanks to residents who alerted the Fire Service and FGHW committee, and to those who attended with cans of water.

“We rely on visitors to the woods and meadows to report any suspicious activity and hope you will continue to do this for the benefit of all, while making sure you remain safe.”

People in Gedling borough warned over National Insurance number scam

A worrying new scam has been doing the rounds involving National Insurance numbers, with a warning being put out to people in Gedling borough to those with numbers as they could be defrauded.

The Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) has received a video recording of an automated telephone message claiming that the National Insurance number of the recipient “will be terminated due to some unethical financial transactions.”

The automated message states: “This call is in regards to your National Insurance number. Ignoring this final warning may lead you to legal troubles. The reason behind this phone call is to inform you that your National Insurance number will be terminated due to some unethical financial transactions.”

The recording then asks the recipient to “please press ‘1’ to get more details.”

The CTSI say the call is a data harvesting or phishing attempt, which could lead to identity theft. Pressing the button puts the recipient in touch with a scammer who will supposedly verify their National Insurance number. Unfortunately, anyone who responds is revealing key personal details putting their finances in danger. 

Katherine Hart, a lead officer at CTSI, said: “This scam is despicable in its attempt to scare the public with the threat of losing their National Insurance number at this challenging time for everyone. It’s astounding that these unscrupulous scammers refer to unethical transactions as the reason. 

“If you receive this call, do not ever press ‘1’ and please warn others about it. Also, report it to the authorities, such as Action Fraud, or in Scotland, Police Scotland. Reporting all instances of fraud helps consumer protectors establish a clearer picture of the landscape and the true scale of this problem.”
