Here’s our weekly round-up from the Mellish RFC teams by Matt Bright
Mellish Ladies 32 v 5 Scunthorpe Ladies
Mellish Ladies welcomed Scunthorpe Ladies after an improved display away at Derby Vipers last week.
Mellish opened the scoring early on with a smart set of hands getting the ball wide to Ebony Hancock o dot down in the corner for a 5-0 lead. Soon after Mellish Ladies dominant pack gave a good platform for number 8 Sarah Driver to pick from a base of a scrum and run from just inside the Scunthorpe half to increase the lead to 10-0. Following a back and forth 10 minutes played mostly in the centre of the field Hannah Carrington put a smart kick through for Hannah Wilson to kick on and score to give Mellish a 15-0 lead. Further stoppages and some ill discipline by Mellish gave Scunthorpe Ladies some field position and after knocking on the door for a while they got over the try line to claim 5 points just before half time giving a 15-5 scoreline at the interval.
The message was simple at half time, to keep the pressure on and being direct. Mellish were soon on the scoreboard again as Ebony Hancock collected her 2nd try of the day, 20-5. Scunthorpe came back strong after this and spent a good period of time camped in the Mellish 22, but he ladies weathered the storm with only a yellow card for Sarah Driver and a Scunthorpe player for a bit of handbags.
With the sides at 14 players each Mellish moved down field and maximized an overlap with smart hands for Vahi Clerc to cross to give Mellish a 25-5 lead. The day was rounded off by another long range effort from Hanna Wilson fielding the ball just inside the Mellish half and breaking a couple of tackles to cross under the posts and add he conversion to her 2nd try of the day with the final play of the game giving Mellish a 32-5 victory.
