Two local councillors have today backed a campaign by residents calling for traffic calming measures to be installed in a Carlton road.

Residents in Prospect Road want Nottinghamshire County Council to take action as they say speeding motorists have turned it into an accident blackspot.

Nottinghamshire County Council disagreeĀ and told Gedling Eye yesterday that they have no plans to install traffic-calming measures in Prospect Road.

They said that due to budget limitations three reported injury accidents over three years wasnā€™t enough to justify spending the cash.

Paula Johnson, senior highways liason officer for Nottingham County Council said: ā€œPhysical traffic calming measures are reserved for those sites where there is a high incidence of serious or fatal injury accidents occurring as they are very costly and also can have disadvantages in terms of emergency response times.ā€

However, one councillor has now called on a local police team to help residents put together a better case for having measures put in place.

Cllr Alex Scroggie, from Gedling Borough Council, talked to neighbourhood policing teams who have agreed to carry out regular speed checks on Prospect Road; he hopes the results may persuade Nottinghamshire County Council to change their minds.

He said: ā€œIā€™m pleased that the neighbourhood policing team are going to carry out speed checks. This will give a better and fuller picture of speeding on Prospect Road. This can then be presented to the County Council, and strengthen the case for calming measures on Prospect.

Gedling Borough Councilā€™s portfolio holder for Public Protection, Cllr David Ellis, also today added his support to the campaign.

He said: ā€œWe shouldnā€™t have to tolerate this behaviour on our roads. We understand residentsā€™ concerns about speeding and have purchased speed guns and encouraged local communities to come together to form Community Speed watches.

ā€œWe also have an identifiable Community Safety car for use in the Gedling area. Concerned residents should contact their local police or Nottinghamshire County Council.

Prospect Road resident Maxine Payne said she was glad that the campaign was getting support from councillors in Gedling.

She said: ā€œI’m pleased that Gedling Borough Council are at last considering the situation. I have also had a very positive response from Vernon Coaker’s office and Cllr Darryl Pulk.ā€
