Online shoppers in Gedling borough are being warned of a new scam targeting Amazon users in the run up to Black Friday.

Scam-busters Action Fraud is warning consumers to stay vigilant online in the wake of a new email purporting to be from Amazon which demands you take urgent action.

Action Fraud say the email is being sent to both Amazon members and also non-members and they are warning you not to open the email or reply.

The scam email claims there is a problem processing your order and therefore it cannot be shipped until you click on a link to confirm your account.

This, however, is a phishing scam, designed to access your personal and financial information.

The security group believe it is likely that cyber criminals have sent the emails to hundreds of thousands of inboxes in a bid to catch consumers out at the busiest time of year – and cash in on their vulnerability.

To protect yourself from responding to these e-mails and revealing sensitive or private information, Amazon says you can follow these rules:

Amazon.co.uk will never ask you for the following information in an e-mail communication:

  • Your National Insurance Number
  • Your bank account information, credit card number, PIN number, or credit card security code (including “updates” to any of the above)
  • Your mother’s maiden name or other information to identify you (such as your place of birth or your favourite pet’s name)
  • Your Amazon.co.uk password

Action Fraud is offering the following tips if you’ve received a scam email

  • Do not click on any links in the scam email.
  • Do not reply to the email or contact the senders in any way.
  • If you have clicked on a link in the email, do not supply any information on the website that may open.
  • Do not open any attachments that arrive with the email.

Amazon says: “We take phishing and spoofing attempts on our customers very seriously. If you receive an e-mail that you think may not be from Amazon, please report it to us by sending the e-mail to stop-spoofing@amazon.com.”
